This was the first of the 2008 Berkley Center lectures on the topic "Narratives of Secularity." The lectures surveyed the master narratives which have underpinned secularization, explored more adequate ones, and hazarded a picture of the present predicament of religion and spirituality in the West. Charles Taylor is one of the world's leading scholars working at the intersection of religion, secularity, and modernity. A p...

Indeed, they appear to bristle from Ruth Abbey's cover photograph, lending him an air of farsightedness that is entirely appropriate for his intellectual depth. Taylor is one of the rare philosophers today who occupies an intellectual's role in the public sphere and also enjoys a distinguished reputation in academia. In particular, his work on political theory finds expression in his activism in the politics of his native Canada. In academia, he is probably best known for Sources of the Self, a lengthy but widely read volume on modern identity and morality that is one of the most important recent contributions to the so...

In Charles Taylor: Thinking and Living Deep Diversity, Mark Redhead examines the problem of political fragmentation, the problem of how to accommodate narrowly defined groups while promoting allegiance to a larger polity, through an analysis of Taylor's thought and politics. Redhead argues that Taylor's work evinces a gallant, though unsucessful confrontation with fragmentation that dramatically illuminates the politcal, moral and epistemological tensions at play in a problem of political fragme...

Every once in a while, a philosopher emerges from quiet labors in the vineyards of the text to speak with striking relevance to our turbulent times. Charles Taylor, who this week was awarded the first Berggruen Prize for influential ideas, is such a scholar. The philosopher’s long body of work (he’s 84) ranges widely from meditations on secularization to alternative modernities to the authenticity of the expressive individual. But it is Taylor’s thinking on the recognition of irreducible diversity in an interdependent world of plural identities ― and how societies can cope with this reality ― that gives him urgency in this era of Trump, Brexit, the burkini ban and the rise of the anti-immigrant right in Europe.
Liberia’s former president, Charles Taylor, was implicated in the war in Sierra Leone through his support of brutal rebel groups known for killing, raping, and cutting off the limbs of their thousands of victims. He stepped down as president in 2003 and into a comfortable exile in Nigeria. In this video, Elise Keppler describes the campaign that brought Taylor to trial for war crimes, and in particular, how national and international organizations worked together.

The Ethics of Authenticity, Harvard University Press (1992). Charles Taylor focuses on the key modern concept of self-fulfillment, often attacked as the central support of what Christopher Lasch has called "the culture of narcissism." To Taylor, self-fulfillment, although often expressed in self-centered ways, isn't necessarily a rejection of traditional values and social commitment; it also reflects something authentic and valuable in modern culture. Only by distinguishing what is good in this modern striving from what is socially and politically dangerous, Taylor says, can our age be made to deliver its promise. Despite the United Nation's eventual intervention, most of Liberia's young people continue to live in abject poverty, surrounded by filth, drug addiction, and teenage prostitution. The former child soldiers who were forced into war have been left to fend for themselves, the murderous warlords who once led them in cannibalistic rampages have taken up as so-called community leaders, and new militias are lying in wait for the opportunity to reclaim their country from a government they rightly mistrust. http://www.ktnkenya.tv Former Liberian President Charles Ghankay Taylor has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for war crimes against humanity. Taylor was found guilty of aiding and abetting war crimes during the dark era of civil war that rocked neighbouring country of Sierra Leone. He was elected president in 1997 and ruled Liberia for six years before being forced into exile in Nigeria. He was given asylum in a bid to end Liberian civil war. He was judged at the Hague not by the International Criminal Court but by the Special Court for Sierra Leone founded in 2002.
Every time when it gets rough,
Some people just go and hide,
Worrying that it's too tough
And they don't look inside.
I'm gonna fall on my knees,
Humble myself and say,
"Lord, I need a little more help",
"can you just make a way".
Bridge 1:
Through what I feel
(Right now) I just can't deal,
Give me peace
('cause Lord) I need relief.
You love me
(Enough to) show You care,
That's why I stay in prayer.
Chorus
Verse 2:
When it's good, got out the 'hood,
Money just ain't a thing,
Feeling like ya did it yourself,
So ya just ain't caring.
What about keeping in touch
With the One who gives life,
Took away all of your sins
And carried you through your strife.
Chorus
Bridge 2:
It is by grace (that I live),
I can't replace (what God gives).
Chorus
Vamp 1:
Doing just fine, doing just fine.
Better than okay, better than okay.
Vamp 2:
Better than okay, better than okay.
Better than okay, better than okay.
