A museum ship, or sometimes memorial ship, is a ship that has been preserved and converted into a museum open to the public, for educational or memorial purposes. Some are also used for training and recruitment purposes, a use found mostly with the small number of museum ships that are still operational, i.e., capable of regular movement.
There are several hundred museum ships around the world, with around 175 of them organised in the Historic Naval Ships Association though there are also many non-naval museum ships as well, from general merchant ships to tugs and lightships. Many, if not most, museum ships are also associated with a maritime museum.
Despite the long history of sea travel, the ravages of the elements and the expense of maintenance result in the eventual destruction of nearly all ships ever built, often by sinking, usually by being broken up and sold for scrap. Only a few survive, sometimes because of historical significance, but more often due to luck and circumstance. Since an old ship tied up at dockside, without attention, still decays and eventually sinks, the practice of recent years has been to form some sort of preservation society, solicit donations from governments or private individuals, organize volunteer labor from the enthusiasts, and open the restored ship to visitors, usually for a fee.
Viking ships were marine vessels of particular designs, used and built by the Vikings during the Viking Age. The boat-types were quite varied, depending on what the ship was intended for, but they were generally characterized as being slender and flexible boats, with symmetrical ends with true keel. They were clinker built, which is the overlapping of planks riveted together. Some might have had a dragon's head or other circular object protruding from the bow and stern, for design, although this is only inferred from historical sources.
In the literature, Viking ships are usually seen divided into two broad categories: merchant ships and warships. These categories are overlapping; however, some kinds of merchant ships, built for transporting cargo specifically, were also regularly deployed as warships. The majority of Viking ships were designed for sailing rivers, fjords and coastal waters, while a few types, such as the knarr, could navigate the open sea and even the ocean. The Viking ships ranged from the Baltic Sea to far from the Scandinavian homelands, to Iceland, the Faroe Islands, Greenland, Newfoundland, the Mediterranean, the Black Sea and Africa.
This is a video from the Viking Ship Museum in Olso, Norway. In this video you can see the Gokstad Skip, built in 850 at the height of the Vikings era, and buried in 890 A.D. with a man. This ship was discovered in Norway at the Gokstad Farm near Sandefjord in 1880. I made this video on Sept. 8, 2013!

The Viking Ship Museum (Norwegian: Vikingskipshuset på Bygdøy) is located at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. It is part of the Museum of Cultural History of the University of Oslo, and houses archaeological finds from Tune, Gokstad (Sandefjord), Oseberg (Tønsberg) and the Borre mound cemetery.
For our first day in Oslo we decided to check out the Viking Ship Museum on the peninsula of Bygdøy (Vikingskipshuset på Bygdøy). A very cool place with some amazing artifacts and relics. If you find yourself in Oslo, definitely head there! Getting there is super easy and can be achieved by taking a bus (there's a stop right in front of the museum) or a ~10 minute Uber ride.

In 2007 a crew of 65 brave men and women set sail on a journey from Roskilde back to Dublin in a 30m (100ft) Viking longship named "Havhingsten fra Glendalough" ("Sea Stallion from Glendalough"), a Danish reconstruction of the Skuldelev 2 ship on display in the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum and originally built around 1040 near Dublin. BBC TimeWatch follows this amazing journey of experimental maritime archaeology.
Their design was elegant in its simplicity, a long open boat with a single square sail and a row of oars on each side. Using Copenhagen as a springboard, we'll visit the very best of Denmark. Aarhus welcomes us with its ruddy affluence, charming open-air museum, and eerily well-preserved ancient bog man. Roskilde impresses visitors with its royal burial church and the best Viking-ship museum anywhere. And the delightfully quaint isle of Ærø comes with half-timbered cottages, ships in bottles, and cobbled alleyways that remind us of the world of Hans Christian Andersen. © 2008 Rick Steves' Europe
Our extended visit with our good Norwegian friends, Jens & Ranveig, during July 1997. We visited Asker, and many Oslo museums - including the Viking Ship museum, the Kon-Tiki/Thor Heyerdahl museum, and the Holmenkollen Ski Jump as well as the Vigeland Park sculptures. This video is long, probably boring (except to the people in it) and low quality - sorry for all of that... If you are interested in specific places we visited, here is a guide to exactly where to find them on this video. Just click on the exact start time of the video below. For example, click on 13:00min to view the Viking Ship Museum video. Asker town and lake = 1:00min. Asker - the old cultural house Tangen and Semsvannet a nature reserve and lake = 2:00min. Viking Ship Museum = 13:00min. Kon-Tiki Museum = 18:30min....

This is the video that I am projecting in "Skibladnir" my sculptural installation at the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo (February 1 through March 25, 2012). I've been altering the video on a nearly daily basis to fine tune it. It's not supposed to tell a story, yet I want it to convey a feeling, a sense of voyages, transitions, life and death. There is no sound playing at the museum, but I inadvertently left it on most of these clips. I often listen to the sound while I'm editing it. Ideally, the installation would have sound, but it was not appropriate for the Viking Ship Museum.
