Samuel Johnson (September 18, 1709 – December 13 1784), often referred to as Dr Johnson, was an English writer who made lasting contributions to English literature as a poet, essayist, moralist, literary critic, biographer, editor and lexicographer. Johnson was a devout Anglican and committed Tory, and has been described as arguably the most distinguished man of letters in English history He is also the subject of "the most famous single work of biographical art in the whole of literature": James Boswell's Life of Samuel Johnson. Born in Lichfield, Staffordshire, Johnson attended Pembroke College, Oxford for just over a year, before his lack of funds forced him to leave. After working as a teacher he moved to London, where he began to write for The Gentleman's Magazine. His early works include the biography The Life of Richard Savage, the poems "London" and "The Vanity of Human Wishes", and the play Irene.
After nine years of work, Johnson's A Dictionary of the English Language was published in 1755. It had a far-reaching effect on Modern English and has been described as one of the greatest single achievements of scholarship. This work brought Johnson popularity and success; until the completion of the Oxford English Dictionary 150 years later, Johnson's was viewed as the pre-eminent British dictionary. His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of William Shakespeare's plays, and the widely read tale Rasselas. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets.
Johnson had a tall and robust figure. His odd gestures and tics were confusing to some on their first encounter with him. Boswell's Life, along with other biographies, documented Johnson's behaviour and mannerisms in such detail that they have informed the posthumous diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, a condition not defined or diagnosed in the 18th century. After a series of illnesses he died on the evening of 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. In the years following his death, Johnson began to be recognised as having had a lasting effect on literary criticism, and even as the only great critic of English literature.

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What do you want your legacy to be? Samuel Johnsons world record marathon unicycle ride around Australia began with this question to his sister who had been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. In this beautiful talk Sam shares, not only what he learned while raising over 1 million dollars for cancer research, but also life lessons we can all take to heart.
Samuel Johnson has established himself as one of Australia’s busiest actors and voice over artisits. He has been working in television, film, theatre and radio for over 20 years, in shows such as the Secret Life of Us, Rush, Underbelly and Wilfred.
In addition to acting, in 2003 Samuel rode his unicycle 1003.4 kilometres between Sydney and Melbourne to raise $500,000 for CanTeen and has initiated a film making program for 'at risk' teens through Open Family, as featured in ABC's 'Australian Story'.
This year, Sam is riding his unicycle again, this time around Australia, with the goal being to keep his promise to his sister Connie that he would complete this ride, raise $1 million, set a new Guinness World Record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle AND spread Connie’s message of breast cancer awareness. Through the Love Your Sister organisation, Sam has now completed his marathon and in doing so raised over $1.5 million dollars.
Samuel consulted all the experts, took none of their advice and set off on the challenge of a lifetime. He made a promise and through determination he kept it! He will be with us at TEDxQUT to share his experiences.

His later works included essays, an influential annotated edition of William Shakespeare's plays, and the widely read tale Rasselas. In 1763, he befriended James Boswell, with whom he later travelled to Scotland; Johnson described their travels in A Journey to the Western Islands of Scotland. Towards the end of his life, he produced the massive and influential Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, a collection of biographies and evaluations of 17th- and 18th-century poets.
Johnson had a tall and robust figure. His odd gestures and tics were confusing to some on their first encounter with him. Boswell's Life, along with other biographies, documented Johnson's behaviour and mannerisms in such detail that they have informed the posthumous diagnosis of Tourette syndrome, a condition not defined or diagnosed in the 18th century. After a series of illnesses he died on the evening of 13 December 1784, and was buried in Westminster Abbey. In the years following his death, Johnson began to be recognised as having had a lasting effect on literary criticism, and even as the only great critic of English literature.

O M Brack Jr., curator of the Johnson Tercentenary exhibition at the Huntington Library, discusses the life of one of the world's greatest men of letters, Samuel Johnson. It is Johnson, of course, who is the subject is what is regarded as the greatest biography ever written, James Boswell's Life of Johnson. This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. What do you want your legacy to be? Samuel Johnsons world record marathon unicycle ride around Australia began with this question to his sister who had been diagnosed with aggressive breast cancer. In this beautiful talk Sam shares, not only what he learned while raising over 1 million dollars for cancer research, but also life lessons we can all take to heart.
Samuel Johnson has established himself as one of Australia’s busiest actors and voice over artisits. He has been working in television, film, theatre and radio for over 20 years, in shows such as the Secret Life of Us, Rush, Underbelly and Wilfred.
In addition to acting, in 2003 Samuel rode his unicycle 1003.4 kilometres between Sydney and Melbourne to raise $500,000 for CanTeen and has initiated a film making program for 'at risk' teens through Open Family, as featured in ABC's 'Australian Story'.
This year, Sam is riding his unicycle again, this time around Australia, with the goal being to keep his promise to his sister Connie that he would complete this ride, raise $1 million, set a new Guinness World Record for the most distance travelled on a unicycle AND spread Connie’s message of breast cancer awareness. Through the Love Your Sister organisation, Sam has now completed his marathon and in doing so raised over $1.5 million dollars.
Samuel consulted all the experts, took none of their advice and set off on the challenge of a lifetime. He made a promise and through determination he kept it! He will be with us at TEDxQUT to share his experiences.

Theresa May delivers her speech during the fourth day of the Conservative party conference in Birmingham
Only the Conservatives can build a "united Britain" in which "fairness is restored" and opportunities are shared more equally, Theresa May has said.
She told the party's conference the country must and would change after the "quiet revolution" of the Brexit vote.
The prime minister said Labour were now seen as the "nasty party" and it was the Conservatives who would "stand up for the weak, and up to the powerful".
Government should be a "force for good" to help working people, she argued.
In her set-piece speech in Birmingham, she said the vote to leave the EU was a turning point in the UK's history and a "once-in-a-generation to change the country for good".
Theresa May kicked off her keynote speech to the Conservative conference with a joke about Boris Johnson's ability to "stay on message".
Giving her keynote address to the conference for the first time as Prime Minister, Ms May said: "When we came to Birmingham this week, some big questions were hanging in the air. Do we have a plan for Brexit? We do.
"Are we ready for the effort it will take to see it through? We are."
Smiling, she asked: "Can Boris Johnson stay on message for a full four days?"
"Just about," she answered, after applause and laughter from the audience.
