Lawrence Muggerud (born January 28, 1968), better known by his stage name DJ Muggs, is Cypress Hill's DJ and producer. He also produced tracks for Funkdoobiest, House of Pain, Dizzee Rascal, U2, Depeche Mode and more. He is the leader of LA art collective Soul Assassins.
Muggs was born in Queens, New York of Italian descent, but was adopted into a Norwegian family. He moved to Los Angeles at age fourteen, and got his start DJ'ing for hip hop group The 7A3, who put out one album in 1988 before disbanding.
He has one daughter, named Francisca.
After linking up with B-Real and Sen Dog to form the group Cypress Hill, he went on to produce seven studio albums with the group from 1991 to 2004. Of the seven, four reached platinum status, and three gold. Meanwhile, he scored hits on the side with Ice Cube's "Check Yo Self" and House of Pain's "Jump Around." During Cypress Hill's early years, DJ Muggs met The Alchemist and his Dilated Peoples brethren on tour, deciding to take the young producer under his wing, providing a jump-start for his career.
Soul Assassins are a loose collective of musicians and graphic artists affiliated to the hip hop group Cypress Hill, formed in the early 1990s. It is also the name of Cypress Hill's publishing company.
In 1997 and 2000 two albums under the name Soul Assassins were released. Both albums; featuring a plethora of rappers, were almost entirely produced by Cypress Hill's beatsmith DJ Muggs, with minor contributions by The Alchemist (three songs) and DJ Khalil (one song) on the second volume.
Dylan Kwabena Mills (born 18 September 1984), better known by his stage name Dizzee Rascal, is an English rapper, songwriter, singer, and record producer. His music spans grime, UK garage, bassline, British hip hop, and R&B. Best known for his number-one hits "Dance wiv Me", "Bonkers", "Holiday", "Dirtee Disco", and "Shout", his debut album Boy in da Corner is considered a grime classic and earned him the 2003 Mercury Prize. Follow-up albums Showtime, Maths + English, and Tongue n' Cheek have been critically acclaimed and certified gold, with Tongue n' Cheek going platinum for sales exceeding 300,000 units in the United Kingdom.
Rascal was born in London. His Nigerian father died when Rascal was young, and he was raised in Bow, London, in a single-parent family, by his Ghanaian mother Priscilla, about whom he says, "I had issues as a kid. I was violent and disruptive. The way my mum helped was by finding me a different school every time I got kicked out, always fighting to keep me in the school system."
