In this video I shoot the worlds first liquid metal bullets made from sodium and potassium. I recorded the whole thing on a high speed phantom camera borrowed from http://Aimed-Research.com.
I melted the soft lead from .45 caliber hollow point bullets and replaced it with super soft sodium and potassium metal. When you combine sodium and potassium they form a liquid metal! I tested these bullets in a acrylic test chamber filled with water, and recorded the results on a high speed camera.
I chose .45 bullets because they could hold the most metal. Once I melt out the lead, the empty copper jackets can hold around 1 cubic centimeter of material. Lead has a density of around 11g/cm3, and sodium & potassium have a density of only ~1g/cm3. They bullets are much lighter, so they don't have as much kinetic energy. Even though they carry less energy, they expand way faster because of the soft metals. The energy is transferred instantly! A lead bullet takes around 2 feet to stop in water, but these bullets stop in 6 inches!
This was my most expensive video ever, I spent $1300 on sodium, potassium, and a gun!

The bullet has evolved over 200 years of scientific research from a simple lead ball, to the incredible hi-power rounds of today. Naked Science explores the science behind the bullet and the technical advances that led to today’s ammunition. We learn how science better understands the ballistics that govern their deadly flight.
Naked Science starts by exploring the history of how bullets developed. The history of the bullet is inextricably linked to the guns that fire them. From the early smoothbore and rifled muskets, the renowned Colt revolver and the Winchester repeating rifle Naked Science charts the key developments.
Today in the 21st century, there are a dizzying number of different types and sizes of bullet. But first we need to know just how a bullet works? How it flies and whether the size of a bullet makes it better?
Naked Science looks at the stopping power of bullets and find out which is the most deadly. To find out which one does the job one of our experts hits the shooting range to put the destructive power of each bullet to the test and the guns that fire them. Naked Science tests the awesome power of one of the most powerful rifles in the world. The .50 calibre is a gun so powerful that it can penetrate 7 inches of steel and still keep going.
To find the most effective ammunition we need to know what kind of damage they do to the body. So what is the perfect bullet trying to do? And how do the aims differ in both military and law enforcement environments? Dr Martin Fackler, the leading wound expert in the US explains.
In a war zone or even on the city streets those that defend our country face these devastating bullets every day. What can be done to protect them? One answer is body armour. As bullets have become deadlier, body armour has had to get better at stopping them. So how does armour work? Naked Science investigates.
How does understanding the behaviour of bullets help solve crime? Naked Science recreates an unusual real life crime which was solved by Ballistic Forensics. he history of bullets far predates the history of firearms. Originally, bullets were made out of metal, stone or purpose-made clay balls used as sling ammunition, as weapons and for hunting. Eventually as firearms were developed, these same items were placed in front of a propellant charge of gunpowder at the end of a closed tube. As firearms became more technologically advanced, from 1500 to 1800, bullets changed very little. They remained simple round (spherical) lead balls, called rounds, differing only in their diameter.
The development of the hand culverin and matchlock arquebus brought about the use of cast lead balls as projectiles. "Bullet" is derived from the French word boulette which roughly means little ball. The original musket bullet was a spherical lead ball smaller than the bore, wrapped in a loosely fitted paper patch which served to hold the bullet in the barrel firmly upon the powder. (Bullets that were not firmly upon the powder upon firing risked causing the barrel to explode, with the condition known as a short start.) The loading of muskets was, therefore, easy with the old smooth-bore Brown Bess and similar military muskets. The original muzzle-loading rifle, on the other hand, with a more closely fitting ball to take the rifling grooves, was more difficult to load, particularly when the bore of the barrel was fouled from previous firings. For this reason, early rifles were not generally used for military purposes.

Bullets fired from slings, slingshots, and many airguns (including BB guns) travel well below the speed of sound (about 343 m/s or 1126 ft/s in dry air at 20 °C or 68 °F). Low-power handguns have muzzle velocities generally less than the speed of sound (subsonic), while bullets fired from high-power handguns (such as a .44 Magnum) and from rifles have an initial speed faster than the speed of sound, meaning they are supersonic and thus can travel a substantial distance and even hit a target before a nearby observer hears the "bang" of the shot. Bullet speed through air depends on a number of factors such as barometric pressure, humidity, air temperature, and wind speed.

Naked Science
Naked Science is an American documentary television series that premiered in 2004 on the National Geographic Channel and ran through November 2011. The program featured various subjects related to science and technology. I recorded the whole thing on a high speed phantom camera borrowed from http://Aimed-Research.com. I melted the soft lead from .45 caliber hollow point bullets and replaced it with super soft sodium and potassium metal. When you combine sodium and potassium they form a liquid metal! I tested these bullets in a acrylic test chamber filled with water, and recorded the results on a high speed camera.
I chose .45 bullets because they could hold the most metal. Once I melt out the lead, the empty copper jackets can hold around 1 cubic centimeter of material. Lead has a density of around 11g/cm3, and sodium & potassium have a density of only ~1g/cm3. They bullets are much lighter, so they don't have as much kinetic energy. Even though they carry less energy, they expand way faster because of the soft metals. The energy is transferred instantly! A lead bullet takes around 2 feet to stop in water, but these bullets stop in 6 inches!
This was my most expensive video ever, I spent $1300 on sodium, potassium, and a gun!

A bullet is a projectile propelled by a firearm, sling, or air gun. Bullets do not normally contain explosives, but damage the intended target by impact and penetration. The word "bullet" is sometimes colloquially used to refer to ammunition in general, or to a cartridge, which is a combination of the bullet, case/shell, powder, and primer. This use of 'bullet', when 'cartridge' is intended, leads to confusion when the components of a cartridge are discussed or intended. See the reference section for more detail.
he history of bullets far predates the history of firearms. Originally, bullets were made out of metal, stone or purpose-made clay balls used as sling ammunition, as weapons and for hunting. Eventually as firearms were developed, these same items were placed in front of a propellant charge of gunpowder at the end of a closed tube. As firearms became more technologically advanced, from 1500 to 1800, bullets changed very little. They remained simple round (spherical) lead balls, called rounds, differing only in their diameter.
The development of the hand culverin and matchlock arquebus brought about the use of cast lead balls as projectiles. "Bullet" is derived from the French word boulette which roughly means little ball. The original musket bullet was a spherical lead ball smaller than the bore, wrapped in a loosely fitted paper patch which served to hold the bullet in the barrel firmly upon the powder. (Bullets that were not firmly upon the powder upon firing risked causing the barrel to explode, with the condition known as a short start.) The loading of muskets was, therefore, easy with the old smooth-bore Brown Bess and similar military muskets. The original muzzle-loading rifle, on the other hand, with a more closely fitting ball to take the rifling grooves, was more difficult to load, particularly when the bore of the barrel was fouled from previous firings. For this reason, early rifles were not generally used for military purposes.
