Tokyo (東京, Tōkyō, "Eastern Capital") (Japanese: [toːkjoː], English /ˈtoʊki.oʊ/), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都, Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan, and is both the capital and largest city of Japan. The Greater Tokyo Area is the most populous metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Emperor of Japan and the Japanese government. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Formerly known as Edo, it has been the de facto seat of government since 1603 when Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu made the city his headquarters. It officially became the capital after Emperor Meiji moved his seat to the city from the old capital of Kyoto in 1868; at that time Edo was renamed Tokyo. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府, Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市, Tōkyō-shi).
Tourism in Tokyo is a major industry. In 2006, 4.81 million foreigners and 420 million Japanese visits to Tokyo were made; the economic value of these visits totaled 9.4 trillion yen according to the government of Tokyo. Many tourists visit the various downtowns, stores, and entertainment districts throughout the neighborhoods of the special wards of Tokyo; particularly school children on class trips, a visit to Tokyo Tower is de rigueur.
Cultural offerings include both omnipresent Japanese pop culture and associated districts such as Shibuya and Harajuku, subcultural attractions such as Studio Ghibli anime center, as well as museums like the Tokyo National Museum, which houses 37% of the country's artwork national treasures (87/233). No buildings in Tokyo are World heritage sites and only the Jizo Hall of Shofuku-ji, a suburban temple, is a National treasure. Other popular attractions include the Imperial Palace, Meiji Shrine, and Sensō-ji, a popular temple. Finally, many tourists, particularly foreign tourists, visit Tsukiji Fish Market, as the time-zone difference leads to foreign visitors waking up very early local time.
The transport network in Greater Tokyo includes public and private rail and highway networks; airports for international, domestic, and general aviation; buses; motorcycle delivery services, walking, bicycling, and commercial shipping. While the nexus is in the central part of Tokyo, every part of the Greater Tokyo Area has rail or road transport services. The sea and air transport is available from limited number of ports for the general public.

Get info about things to do, where to stay, and the best food to eat on your visit to Tokyo, Japan. Here's the guide: http://wp.me/psd9b-4EA Tokyo (東京), Japan, is one of the world's greatest cities, and there's so much to do and see when you visit. From temples and shrines, to gardens and museums, you'll never run out of attractions. Out of all the things you could do, I've chosen a top 25 list for this awesome city (and just so you know food is my first choice in Tokyo)! 1. Ameya-Yokochō (アメヤ横丁) - A giant open air market that offers clothes, cosmetics, food, and restaurants and bars. 2. Meiji Shrine (明治神宮) - This Shinto shrine, surrounded by beautiful forest, is extremely significant. 3. Ryogoku Kokugikan (両国国技館) - Even if it's not fight season, you can go to the free sumo museum and ea...

Tokyo Tokyo, Japan is the original mega-city, a throbbing, dynamic metropolis of 32.5 million people, well over 50 percent more massive than the world's next largest metropolitan areas. With populations clustering around 20 million people, the metro regions of Seoul, Mexico City, New York and Mumbai are all less than two-thirds the magnitude of the Tokyo metro area. Tokyo's ranking as the world's number one city goes well beyond the sheer scale of its population. Its lively Shibuya district is home to the world's busiest intersection, a vibrant pedestrian scramble which people traverse from every direction at the same time. Tokyo's famously bustling Tsukiji Market plays fishmonger to the world as the largest wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet. Yet, despite its immense proporti...

Did you know that Tokyo has islands? Yes, the prefecture (province/state) of Tokyo has a volcanic chain of islands called the Izu Seven Islands group. We stayed at Shikinejima (Shikine-jima), which is a small island 3 km long by 2.5 km wide that is located 160 km south of the city of Tokyo. To get there, we took an overnight ferry, where we slept on a carpeted floor. After a quiet year, the Senkaku Islands are back in the news this week after a horde of Chinese fishing ships (of course escorted by the Chinese coast guards) appeared next to the islands. Is this a reaction to the new Abe cabinet? Or possibly something to do with Japan's involvement in the South China Sea territorial dispute? Host Timothy Langley and Michael Cucek explore the different possibilities. The Japanese PM Shinzo Abe claimed Thursday that he would like to “create a new history of bilateral relations with Russia. Moscow and Tokyo have not settled a territorial dispute yet. Japan claims four Kuril islands. The country's authorities set their return as a condition of signing a peaceful agreement with Russia, which had not been signed after the WWII. Moscow's stance consists in the fact that the islands joined the Soviet Union given results of the WWII and Russia's sovereignty is indubitable. Does Japan really reject its principles and get ready for reset of relations with Russia? Vitaliy Shvydko, Head of the Section for Japanese Economics and Politics Studies at the Institute of World Economy and International Relations: “It seems to be a ritual phrase. Stay tuned for Day 2 video, coming soon! ^^ To answer many questions, no, I'm not Japanese. I am Korean-American. My mother is from Seoul. My father is from Chicago. Desde allí accedimos al templo Sensoji...
This feature documentary is a candid journey into the world of 4 young Canadian women who work as well-paid hostesses in exclusive Japanese nightclubs. Lured by adventure and easy money, these modern-day geisha find themselves caught up in the mizu shobai - the complex "floating water world" of Tokyo clubs and bars. Drawn by fast money, some women become consumed by the lavish lifestyle and forget why they came. One hostess calls it "losing the plot." With a pulsating visual style, Tokyo Girls captures the raw energy of urban Japan and its fascination with the new. Directed by Penelope Buitenhuis - 2000
Take my hand
Rob me for a while of my sight
Don't let me stand
Here underneath the red light
Oh touch my face
Feel the fascination as love grows
Your embrace
Eases the pain that only Tokyo knows
Where were you when I was cold
And all the world was out to get me
(Chorus)
Tokyo
Why can't I ever say no
Tokyo
Sense the chill
Of silent nights on my skin
Feel the thrill
As these four walls just cave in
Taste the rain
Splashes down on my roof
Seek in vain
For you will never know the real truth
This human heart beats much too fast
For comfort or for love in Tokyo
(Repeat Chorus)
