Visiting Jerash, Jordan Travel Video (Gerasa of Antiquity - Γέρασα - محافظة جرش). So another new country for us. Today we are in Jordan. We just landed in Amman yesterday and this morning we are exploring the Ancient city of Jerash and now this is a Greco-Roman city so it belonged to the Greeks then it was converted by the Romans and the architecture was slighted changed so we're going to be showing you some of that.

So this is a Roman planned theater. When in use it could sit up to three thousand people and it was used for all kinds of performances.

We're now at the temple of Artemis the Goddess of the Sea.
So with the wall we were looking at just behind the olive press you can track the three different civilizations because at the very bottom you have the Greek blocks which were all different sizes and didn't really match. Then you can see the Roman style which were the big blocks of limestone and then at the very top there were smaller blocks which were placed by an Islamic culture.
This particular section was only uncovered in the 1970's. Prior to that it was underground.

Here's where the chariot races take place
we're going to be watching those later this
afternoon should be pretty interesting
Each day there are live performances
reenacting great battles as Roman soldiers
demonstrate their tactics, equipment and weapons
and the grand finale ends with a chariot race
around the hippodrome
We've come to the amphitheatre and I'm standing
on the stage now the cool thing about this
place is that it was built to the north to
protect all of the people from the sun because
they didn't have big canopies and it was all
open air so at least if it was facing this way they
didn't have the harsh sun while they were
watching their performances
We just watched a gladiator show
soldiers were pretending that they were fighting
it was really a cool thing to do when you
come here!

" أنا جرش " عنوان فيلم قصير حول تاريخ و فن العمارة في المدينة القديمة جرش. يحكي الفيلم قصة جرش من عصور ما قبل التاريخ إلى العصر الإسلامي. يظهر الفيلم عدداً من المواقع الأثرية مع التركيز على تفردها من حيث الفن، العمارة و الوظيفة مثل المدرج الجنوبي و الشمالي ، قوس النصر ، ساحة الأعمدة ، كوزموس و كنيسة داميانوس و المسجد الأموي. و يظهر الفيلم أيضا جولات سياحية في معبد زيوس ، المتحف و متحف جرش المعماري التي تبرز المعالم المدهشة المكتشفة هناك.

"I am Jerash" is a short film about the history and archaeology of the ancient city of Jerash in Jordan. It tells the story of Jerash since prehistoric times until the Islamic period. A number of sites are shown in the short film, while focusing on their uniqueness in terms of art, architecture and function, such as the Southern and the Northern Theatres, Hadrian's Arch, the Hippodrome, Cosmos and Damianos Church and the Umayyad mosque. The film also includes tours in the Zeus Temple Museum and the Jerash Archaeological Museum, highlighting some of the most astonishing artifacts discovered on the site.
The film is part of an Educational Resource Kit in Arabic aimed at providing supplementary extra-curricular pedagogical aid for teachers leading site visits for students of 5th and 6th grades in Jerash (Jordan) and has been prepared by the UNESCO Office in Amman in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Friends of Archaeology and Heritage Jordan.

Jerash, the Gerasa of Antiquity (Ancient Greek: Γέρασα, Hebrew: גַ'רַש), is the capital and largest city of Jerash Governorate (محافظة جرش), which is situated in the north of Jordan, 48 kilometres (30 mi) north of the capital Amman towards Syria. Jerash Governorate's geographical features vary from cold mountains to fertile valleys from 250 to 300 metres (820 to 980 ft) above sea level, suitable for growing a wide variety of crops.
In the latter Ottoman period, the city of Jerash's name was abandoned and changed to Sakib, yet this was not a permanent development, as the name "Jerash" reappears in Ottoman tax registers by the end of 16th century.
A strong earthquake in 749 AD destroyed large parts of Jerash, while subsequent earthquakes along with the wars and turmoil contributed to additional destruction. Its destruction and ruins remained buried in the soil for hundreds of years until they were discovered by German Orientalist Ulrich Jasper Seetzen in 1806. He began excavation and a return to life of the current Jerash by inhabitants of older villages. 70 years later, this was followed by the Muslim community, Circassians, who emigrated to Jordan from the Caucasus in 1878 after the Ottoman-Russian war. Subsequently a large community of people from Syria came to the area at the beginning of the 20th century.

So this is a Roman planned theater. When in use it could sit up to three thousand people and it was used for all kinds of performances.

We're now at the temple of Artemis the Goddess of the Sea.
So with the wall we were looking at just behind the olive press you can track the three different civilizations because at the very bottom you have the Greek blocks which were all different sizes and didn't really match. Then you can see the Roman style which were the big blocks of limestone and then at the very top there were smaller blocks which were placed by an Islamic culture.
This particular section was only uncovered in the 1970's. Prior to that it was underground.

Visiting Jerash, Jordan Travel Video (Gerasa of Antiquity - Γέρασα - محافظة جرش). So another new country for us. Today we are in Jordan. We just landed in Amman yesterday and this morning we are exploring the Ancient city of Jerash and now this is a Greco-Roman city so it belonged to the Greeks then it was converted by the Romans and the architecture was slighted changed so we're going to be showing you some of that.

protect all of the people from the sun because
they didn't have big canopies and it was all
open air so at least if it was facing this way they
didn't have the harsh sun while they were
watching their performances
We just watched a gladiator show
soldiers were pretending that they were fighting
it was really a cool thing to do when you
come here!

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, "glide" over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and "see" the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.
