Letter: Our pain is in hands of others

I respond to last Sunday’s Dispatch article “The curse of pain.” I am struck by the hubris of doctors, our government and our insurers. These entities decide how much pain I have to endure.

Even if my doctor is compassionate about my pain, when he sends me to knit, he is telling me my pain is not really important. How is it in the land of the free someone else dictates how much pain I have to endure? Shouldn’t that be my decision?

I can't end it permanently, that’s against the law, and so is taking enough medications to make it bearable. I can, however, drink myself into a stupor and everyone is OK with that.
