South Africa, officially the Republic of South Africa, is the southernmost sovereign state in Africa. It is bounded on the south by 2,798 kilometers of coastline of southern Africa stretching along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, on the north by the neighbouring countries of Namibia, Botswana and Zimbabwe, and on the east by Mozambique and Swaziland, and surrounding the kingdom of Lesotho. South Africa is the 25th-largest country in the world by land area, and with close to 53 million people, is the world's 24th-most populous nation. It is the southernmost country on the mainland of the Old World or the Eastern Hemisphere.
South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. Its pluralistic makeup is reflected in the constitution's recognition of 11 official languages, which is among the highest number of any country in the world. Two of these languages are of European origin: Afrikaans developed from Dutch and serves as the first language of most white and coloured South Africans; English reflects the legacy of British colonialism, and is commonly used in public and commercial life, though it is fourth-ranked as a spoken first language.

Travel video about destination South-Africa. Johannesburg is the commercial centre of South Africa. Since gold was first discovered there, everything has revolved around money and from the 50th floor of Africa’s tallest building, The Carlton Towers, there is an all-engulfing view of the city’s narrow streets and jungle of concrete and glass. The African Museum is a contemporary building and one of South Africa’s most exquisite landmarks, it contains a large variety of geological exhibits and detailed accounts of the city’s past surface mining that gave rise to the country’s massive gold rush. The resistance to apartheid is also illustrated, as well as the history of Africa’s native inhabitants who journeyed from present day Botswana to the south of the country. In contrast to Johannesburg, ...

South Africa, a land of wonder and excitement; a place where you can walk amongst lions or ride a top great elephants – it truly is a land of adventure! Although there are endless activities that you can partake in, before embarking on a journey to this beautiful country, there are a few things to know to prepare you for the trip. Here are my top 5 tips on what to do in South Africa! 1) BE SAFE! Do not walk around at night. The crime rate in Cape Town is actually quite high so avoid putting yourself in compromising situations. In addition, if you’re a woman, this is incredibly important because the sexual assault and rape rates are also high so keep that in mind. Be safe. 2) GO ON A SAFARI! Do not leave South Africa without going on some kind of game drive/safari where you’ll get the ch...

During the days of apartheid, the Muizenberg beach was off limits to blacks. They could only go to beaches abandoned by the whites : beaches that were too dangerous, or shark-infested… After apartheid, a white man decided to initiate poor black kids in surfing, to get them off drugs. One pupil even became world champion, to the delight of the whole community. Social rifts still exist, however. The Camps Bay beach is for the wealthiest, obviously mostly white, whereas the blacks tend to go to the Muizenberg Beach. In the evening, however, they all frequent the bars, restaurants and clubs along the Camp Bay promenade. As violence is still prevalent in Sou...

Finance Minister Nhlanhla Nene was regarded by businessmen and investors as a competent steward of South Africa's economy, the second largest in Africa. His departure - after being fired by President Jazob Zuma - has spooked stock markets, triggering the biggest drop in the value of the rand currency for four years. The shock removal comes a week after the Fitch credit rating agency downgraded South Africa to just one step above junk status. Nene's sacking also follows growing disillusionment and protests against South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC). So, how will the ANC cope with the latest blow to the battered economy? Presenter: Jane Dutton. Guests: Mzwanele Manyi, Former cabinet spokesperson for the ANC and President of the Progressive Professional Fo...

The anti-corruption activists say the march was in support of transparent funding models for South Africa’s political parties. They say there is a need to bring an end to state-owned enterprises being used to benefit corrupt individuals. Since the African National Congress (ANC) took over, corrupt officials are said to have stolen a staggering $50bn. Is the ANC to blame? And can the scourge of corruption be stopped? Presenter: Mike Hanna Guests: Ayesha Kajee, political analyst. Bantu Holomisa, member of parliament and the president of the United Democratic Movement. Refiloe Nt’sekhe, spokesperson for the Democratic Alliance.

We hear from the inhabitants as they eloquently argue their case for real citizenship rights. The shack dwellers movement, Abahlali baseMjondolo, began in 2005. Their slogan is 'Talk to us, not about us.' 'It's not that people like to live in shacks. No one will ever want to live in these conditions but they need to be close to their work' explains S'bu Zikode, Abahlali's elected leader. However, the group has not been welcomed by the ANC. They've been met with aggression rather than ...
This 1977 United Nations (UN) documentary examines the role of Afrikaners in South Africa’s former apartheid system during the 20th century. While the director indulged in a modicum of Afrikaner stereotyping, this documentary is nevertheless an informative ‘glance’ into the latter’s psyche.

South Africa's President Jacob Zuma, has over the years, proven himself to be the ultimate political survivor. Implicated in scandal after scandal, he's always managed to come out on top. But now Mr. Zuma is facing perhaps his biggest controversy yet. Challenged on his relationship with the wealthy and influential Gupta family, who hold a range of business interests in South Africa. This week, South Africa's Deputy Finance Minister Mcebisi Jonas, said members of the Gupta family offered him the top ministerial post. That was after finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene, was sacked. Nene was a respected figure in the government but had a difficult relationship with Zuma. And his sacking was highly controversial. The whole saga has now focused attention on the President's alleged network of p...

Once I was anothers lover
Now I am my own
Trying to call myself a brother
Living here alone
Maybe if you came to see me
Wishing I wasn't so blind
Sitting here thinking to be free
Maybe we'd all change our mind
She is kind and beautiful
I am young and strong
We have never met each other
But it can't be long
Oft' I have slept by her window
Often I whisper her name
And wonder that words in the wind blow
