Mozambique (/moʊzæmˈbiːk/ or /mɔːzæmˈbiːk/), officially the Republic of Mozambique (Portuguese: Moçambique or República de Moçambique, pronounced: [ʁɛˈpublikɐ di musɐ̃ˈbiki]), is a country in Southeast Africa bordered by the Indian Ocean to the east, Tanzania to the north, Malawi and Zambia to the northwest, Zimbabwe to the west, and Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest. It is separated from Madagascar by the Mozambique Channel to the east. The capital and largest city is Maputo (known as "Lourenço Marques" before independence).
Between the 1st and 5th centuries AD, Bantu-speaking peoples migrated from farther north and west. Swahili, and later also Arab, commercial ports existed along the coasts until the arrival of Europeans. The area was explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498 and colonized by Portugal from 1505. After over four centuries of Portuguese rule, Mozambique gained independence in 1975, becoming the People's Republic of Mozambique shortly thereafter. After only two years of independence, the country descended into an intense and protracted civil war lasting from 1977 to 1992. In 1994, Mozambique held its first multiparty elections and has remained a relatively stable presidential republic.

The recent discovery of a major natural gas field off Mozambique's coast could transform the country's economy. But, what could turn one of the world's least developed nations into one of its top producers of liquefied natural gas, requires a massive social and economic change for the residents of the region, as Clementine Logan reports.
Renamo insurgents have reactivated their old military base in Mozambique's Inhambane Province, report local residents, after the presence of Renamo gunmen caused hundreds of families to flee the villages of Fanha-Fanha and Pembe on Friday. Renamo, which has functioned as Mozambique's main opposition party since an international brokered peace accord in 1993 , began rebuilding its armed insurgency in 2012, after surveys of the country's gas resources set Mozambique on the path to becoming the world's second largest exporter of liquefied natural gas. Analysts warned for several months that Renamo, backed by transnational interests, plans to subvert Mozambique during the general elections scheduled for 2014........ http://nsnbc.me/2014/01/07/mozambique-poised-for-civil-war-renamo-reactivates-...

Despite massive coal deposits, over 80% of Mozambiquans live without electricity, while coal mining and energy projects in the North are vital to the countrys growth. Its in bio-fuel where Mozambique is pinning its hopes, not only for local power generation but also agricultural development. Only 6.6% of Mozambiques some 64million hectares of arable land is currently utilized. By rekindling the countrys sugar industry and modeling its bio-fuel policy on success stories like Brazil and Mauritius, authorities say Mozambique could produce over 3 million barrels of bio-oil a day.
When Mozambique emerged from a 17 year civil war in 1992, its economy was in tatters, infrastructure had been destroyed and there was no industry to speak of. A peace deal between Frelimo and Renamo, put an end to the conflict. At the same time there were some important developments going on next door. The release of Nelson Mandela from 27 years of imprisonment and the ensuing democracy provided the impetus for further regional stability. And it set the stage for sound macroeconomic reform and rapid growth Mozambique would experience over the next decade.

It's often said that India and China are rivals when it comes to investing in new markets. However, in Africa, the two countries are often not in competition at all. Chinese and Indian businesses tend to chase contracts in completely different sectors of the economy. The BBC's Vineet Khare is in Mozambique looks at the types of business pursued by the two emerging superpowers.
Despite a record shortage of prawns in Mozambique and a nation-wide seasonal ban on commercial prawn trade activities until March, Maputo's voracious appetite for the crustaceans runs unabated. Ecological and economic factors conspire as Mozambique, which was once of the world's great producers of fish, especially prawns, experiences plummeting exports, and the commodity is overtaken by mineral resource processing and extraction.

In Mozambique's central Nhamapaza region, coaches, lorries and cars stand idle on the country's main highway, waiting for a military convoy to escort them safely north. This is the new normal in a country where clashes between the national army and Renamo, an armed insurgent group and elected opposition party, have intensified, reviving the spectre of a civil war that ended more than 20 years ago.

The deposits are now being mined by a local company, Mwriti, in partnership with a British company, Gemfields, which owns the luxury Fabergé brand and prides itself on the ethical sourcing of precious stones - "completely traceable from mine to market". Their joint venture, 75 percent owned by Gemfields, controls a concession that covers 340 square kilometres of land and promises to be hugely profitable. But disturbing allegations have emerged that threaten to cast a dark shadow over the project. For this episode of Africa Investigates, Mozambican jour...

I like to spend some time in Mozambique
The sunny sky is aqua blue
And all the couples dancing cheek to cheek
It's very nice to stay a week or two
And fall in love just me and you.
There's a lot of pretty girls in Mozambique
And plenty time for good romance
And everybody likes to stop and speak
To give the special one you seek a chance
Or maybe say hello with just a glance.
Lying next to her by the ocean
Reaching out and touching her hand
Whispering your secret emotion
Magic in a magical land.
And when it's time for leaving Mozambique
To say goodbye to sand and sea
You turn around to take a final peek
And you see why it's so unique to be
Among the lovely people living free
