PAPER LOTUS is about a quirky 28-year-old, Tess (Jessika Van), who is a struggling accessories designer and has always lived in the shadow of her successful, perfectionist Taiwanese father (Jim Lau). For years, Tess has yearned for the chance to prove herself, and when a dear family member passes away unexpectedly, she seizes the chance to step up and help her father organize the funeral. Now, Tess must navigate the intricate traditions of a Taiwanese funeral ritual in order to meet her father's impossible demands. However, when an once-in-a-lifetime career opportunity comes knocking at her door, Tess is forced to choose between work and family, and risk losing connection with her father.

Jessika Van
Jessika Van is a Taiwanese American actress, as well as singer-songwriter, pianist and dancer. Van is most known for playing "Becca," the ringleader of the Asians or the Asian mafia on Season 2 and Season 3 of MTV's Awkward. She also plays Kim, a Hong Kong Police Officer and sister of Detective Lee in the upcoming Rush Hour TV series. Van also portrays the lead soldier character "Hannah" (with her voice, motion capture performance, and digital likeness) in the game Battlefield 4.

Van recently stars as Grace Park opposite Justin Chon (who plays love interest Sid Park) in Benson Lee's film Seoul Searching (2015), which will make its premiere as an official selection of the 2015 Sundance Film Festival. She also played the role of the Sports Bar Waitress in the film The Gambler (2014) in a scene opposite both John Goodman and Mark Wahlberg where she remarks to Wahlberg not to pin the choice of beer on her; the film was directed by Rupert Wyatt and written by Oscar-award winning screenwriter William Monahan. Van also starred as Annie in Junya Sakino's Sake-Bomb (2013) (also written by Jeff Mizushima) which premiered at the 2013 SXSW Film Festival. She also starred in Byron Q's film Bang Bang (2011), which won a Special Jury Award for Best First Feature, Narrative, at the 2011 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival. She also starred as Mia Ho in Danny Roth's feature comedy Foreign Exchange (2008).

Having reached a scalability barrier we decided to re-architect our infrastructure to use Spark as the primary processing engine. It supports our realtime and on-demand processing needs. In this talk we will present how we approached migrating from Hive to Spark and the issues that we faced along the way.

This talk will explain how time works around the world, how to deal with it on computers in general and with Elixir specifically. Even big names such as Apple, Microsoft, Twitter have had problems with time causing bugs that meant that APIs, Zunes or iPods would stop working. Many of these bugs could have been prevented with better general knowledge about time. Most programmers have to deal with time issues such as DST and timezones. But few know the difference between GMT, UT1, UTC and TAI. The talk first provides a short introduction to how modern time measurement evolved and how it works today. Covering solar clocks, trains, caesium atoms, astronomy, timezones, legislation, leap seconds and more. A particularly interesting part of the presentation is a Phoenix app showing a live clock with the relationship between the Daylight Saving Time, atomic time, timezones and leap seconds. Tzdata is the only Elixir library for providing timezone information. I will explain how the first versions relied heavily on macros/metaprogramming. And why I changed it so the new version uses ETS tables and makes more use of OTP concepts and concurrency. This use of OTP means you can have more up to date timezone information on Elixir than on other platforms. Then, some general recommendations and best practices for developing software that has to work with date and time. Finally an overview of Calendar (and related packages for Phoenix and Ecto) and how they incorporate the aforementioned best practices.
