This is the fourth episode of Decisive Battles, a television series that uses the game Rome: Total War to illustrate ancient battles from 1274 B.C to 451 A.D. This show focuses on the Battle of Marathon, the ill-fated invasion of Greece by Persian king Darius I.
The Battle of Marathon (Greek: Μάχη τοῦ Μαραθῶνος, Machē tu Marathōnos) took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars.
The first Persian invasion was a response to Greek involvement in the Ionian Revolt, when Athens and Eretria had sent a force to support the cities of Ionia in their attempt to overthrow Persian rule. The Athenians and Eretrians had succeeded in capturing and burning Sardis, but were then forced to retreat with heavy losses. In response to this raid, Darius swore to burn down Athens and Eretria. According to Herodotus, Darius asked for his bow, he placed an arrow upon the string and he discharged it upwards towards heaven, and as he shot into the air he said: "Zeus, grant me to take vengeance upon the Athenians!". Also he charged one of his servants, to say to him, every day before dinner, three times: "Master, remember the Athenians."
At the time of the battle, Sparta and Athens were the two largest city states. Once the Ionian revolt was finally crushed by the Persian victory at the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, Darius began plans to subjugate Greece. In 490 BC, he sent a naval task force under Datis and Artaphernes across the Aegean, to subjugate the Cyclades, and then to make punitive attacks on Athens and Eretria. Reaching Euboea in mid-summer after a successful campaign in the Aegean, the Persians proceeded to besiege and capture Eretria. The Persian force then sailed for Attica, landing in the bay near the town of Marathon. The Athenians, joined by a small force from Plataea, marched to Marathon, and succeeded in blocking the two exits from the plain of Marathon.
The Greeks could not hope to face the superior Persian cavalry; however, when learning that the Persian cavalry was temporarily absent from the camp, Miltiades ordered a general attack against the Persians. He reinforced his flanks, luring the Persians' best fighters into his centre. The inward wheeling flanks enveloped the Persians, routing them. The Persian army broke in panic towards their ships, and large numbers were slaughtered. The defeat at Marathon marked the end of the first Persian invasion of Greece, and the Persian force retreated to Asia. Darius then began raising a huge new army with which he meant to completely subjugate Greece; however, in 486 BC, his Egyptian subjects revolted, indefinitely postponing any Greek expedition. After Darius died, his son Xerxes I restarted the preparations for a second invasion of Greece, which finally began in 480 BC.
The Battle of Marathon was a watershed in the Greco-Persian wars, showing the Greeks that the Persians could be beaten; the eventual Greek triumph in these wars can be seen to begin at Marathon. Since the following two hundred years saw the rise of the Classical Greek civilization, which has been enduringly influential in western society, the Battle of Marathon is often seen as a pivotal moment in European history. The battle is perhaps now more famous as the inspiration for the marathon race. Although thought to be historically inaccurate, the legend of the Greek messenger Pheidippides running to Athens with news of the victory became the inspiration for this athletic event, introduced at the 1896 Athens Olympics, and originally run between Marathon and Athens.

Samons, Professor of Classical Studies, Boston University, chronicles the Battle of Marathon, fought over 2000 years ago in 490 BC between Greeks and Persians — a battle that changed the course of history. In addition, Samons also describes how the legend of Pheidippides, the runner who purportedly ran from Marathon to Athens with news of the Athenian victory, contributed to the birth of the race we know as the marathon.
This is a great video clip to share with students.
ExL provides this video as a classroom resource teachers and students can use to increase their background knowledge of the Persian Wars and the significance of those wars on world history.

The Battle of Marathon (Greek: Μάχη τοῦ Μαραθῶνος, Machē tu Marathōnos) took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars.
The first Persian invasion was a response to Greek involvement in the Ionian Revolt, when Athens and Eretria had sent a force to support the cities of Ionia in their attempt to overthrow Persian rule. The Athenians and Eretrians had succeeded in capturing and burning Sardis, but were then forced to retreat with heavy losses. In response to this raid, Darius swore to burn down Athens and Eretria. According to Herodotus, Darius asked for his bow, he placed an arrow upon the string and he discharged it upwards towards heaven, and as he shot into the air he said: "Zeus, grant me to take vengeance upon the Athenians!". Also he charged one of his servants, to say to him, every day before dinner, three times: "Master, remember the Athenians."
At the time of the battle, Sparta and Athens were the two largest city states. Once the Ionian revolt was finally crushed by the Persian victory at the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, Darius began plans to subjugate Greece. In 490 BC, he sent a naval task force under Datis and Artaphernes across the Aegean, to subjugate the Cyclades, and then to make punitive attacks on Athens and Eretria. Reaching Euboea in mid-summer after a successful campaign in the Aegean, the Persians proceeded to besiege and capture Eretria. The Persian force then sailed for Attica, landing in the bay near the town of Marathon. The Athenians, joined by a small force from Plataea, marched to Marathon, and succeeded in blocking the two exits from the plain of Marathon.
The Greeks could not hope to face the superior Persian cavalry; however, when learning that the Persian cavalry was temporarily absent from the camp, Miltiades ordered a general attack against the Persians. He reinforced his flanks, luring the Persians' best fighters into his centre. The inward wheeling flanks enveloped the Persians, routing them. The Persian army broke in panic towards their ships, and large numbers were slaughtered. The defeat at Marathon marked the end of the first Persian invasion of Greece, and the Persian force retreated to Asia. But at the peak station, the visitor actually steps right into a luxury casino.
The green slopes of the Pyrenees are easy to recognize amidst the other mostly bare and yellowish brown mountains. There's little water and the rock is mainly limestone. The mountains hold lots of marble and other valuable materials. In ancient times, -- was known for its rich silver mine. In the smaller valleys, olive groves are interspersed with orchards of grapes, oranges, lemons and figs. Cereals produced include wheat, barley, rye, maiz and rice. Scented herbs often grow wild in fields and at the roadside. On the rocks, Mediterranean plants grow among the thistles, agave, aloe vera and frigana. Goats, sheep and donkeys graze in the meadows. Use of the cable car is free of charge. This is the casino's gift to prospective customers. However, many won't spend money at the tables, bring a tent to enjoy the fantastic view.
The Pyrenees is surrounded on three sides by tall mountains and only towards the south do we have an open view of the sea. We can see the island of Salamis, famous for another ancient battle. As at marathon, the Greeks faced the Persian force far superior in numbers, however, this is a maritime battle. The story is told by Aeschylus in his tragedy, the Persians.
Athens beach vacation resort begins at some 10km from the Olympian. The section of the Saronic Gulf between Athens and Cape Sounion was called coast of Apollo. There are many important settlements here for example Agios Kosmas. After that, the place fell into deep slumber and it was repopulated only from 1922 when thousands of Greeks left Asia Minor and settled here. The Glyfada market is one of the latter type where the produce of the sea is sold straight from the boat. The catch is so fresh it wiggles. There're tunas, cods, mullets, halibuts and sharks. Tiny sardines are netted in bulk but the nets also trapped squids and octopi. Both are popular in Greek cuisine just like shrimp and other shellfish. Seafood is prepared as soup or as a starter, warm or cold, and it's grilled or made into pita filling or as a salad as well. Squid rings are delicious fried in batter and octopus is often served in a fresh tomato sauce. Clams and shrimp tails are often used in salads.

At 1415m, Parnes is the highest peak in Attica. In the towns of -- and --, along the road that winds up the mountain, tourism is the main source of income today. The attractive open air restaurants are frequented by Athenians too. The Agia Trias resort beneath the peak is accessible by road but it's easier to take the cable car. The cable car system was built in 1971 and then completely rebuilt in 2000. The departure hall is lavish enough with its spiral staircase and state of the art chandelier. But at the peak station, the visitor actually steps right into a luxury casino.
The green slopes of the Pyrenees are easy to recognize amidst the other mostly bare and yellowish brown mountains. There's little water and the rock is mainly limestone. The mountains hold lots of marble and other valuable materials. In ancient times, -- was known for its rich silver mine. In the smaller valleys, olive groves are interspersed with orchards of grapes, oranges, lemons and figs. Cereals produced include wheat, barley, rye, maiz and rice. Scented herbs often grow wild in fields and at the roadside. On the rocks, Mediterranean plants grow among the thistles, agave, aloe vera and frigana. Goats, sheep and donkeys graze in the meadows. Use of the cable car is free of charge. This is the casino's gift to prospective customers. However, many won't spend money at the tables, bring a tent to enjoy the fantastic view.
The Pyrenees is surrounded on three sides by tall mountains and only towards the south do we have an open view of the sea. We can see the island of Salamis, famous for another ancient battle. As at marathon, the Greeks faced the Persian force far superior in numbers, however, this is a maritime battle. The story is told by Aeschylus in his tragedy, the Persians.
Athens beach vacation resort begins at some 10km from the Olympian. The section of the Saronic Gulf between Athens and Cape Sounion was called coast of Apollo. I never thought I would ever say such a thing, but it is true. It worked out that I joined a group of foreigners attending the 2015 Pyongyang marathon. It gave me a chance not only to see the country, but run thru its streets!
For the days I was there, I was able to tour the capital, Pyongyang, meet some of the people. I also made a visit to the North Korean side of the 38th parallel at Panmunjom. It was all a surreal experience, and one that I will never forget.
I was not able to indiscriminately record video like I normally do, and instead had to settle for pictures, my Iphone and my go pro mounted to my new Feiyu Tech 3D gimbal. (http://www.feiyu-tech.com/). The gimbal worked out well enough, and with the footage I collected, I was able to put together this episode of the JaYoe Travelogues.
Now, many people have heard many things about North Korea. Lots of those things seem to be true. But some of them are not so. I went with an open mind, and instead of hate and divisiveness, I found smiling faces. I also found a LOT of propaganda. There is a fear in North Korea… a fear of the United States. You see it almost everywhere you go. The looming threat of the States redirects people’s attention away from the poverty, authorities rule, and draught that currently affects the country.
I tried to make a fair video, highlighting what I saw, exactly how I saw it. I tried to translate some of the speeches told to us by the guides, and it will be up to you to interpret my perception.
To be honest, when I went to North Korea, I did not have a clear understanding of the Korean War or the divide between the North and South. In producing this video, I tried as much as I could to fact check, and actually became quite knowledgeable to the realities of the war, the people, and the places that we visited.

“I recently took a trip to North Korea.”
I never thought I would ever say such a thing, but it is true. It worked out that I joined a group of foreigners attending the 2015 Pyongyang marathon. It gave me a chance not only to see the country, but run thru its streets!
For the days I was there, I was able to tour the capital, Pyongyang, meet some of the people. I also made a visit to the North Korean side of the 38th parallel at Panmunjom. It was all a surreal experience, and one that I will never forget.
I was not able to indiscriminately record video like I normally do, and instead had to settle for pictures, my Iphone and my go pro mounted to my new Feiyu Tech 3D gimbal. (http://www.feiyu-tech.com/). The gimbal worked out well enough, and with the footage I collected, I was able to put together this episode of the JaYoe Travelogues.
Now, many people have heard many things about North Korea. Lots of those things seem to be true. But some of them are not so. I went with an open mind, and instead of hate and divisiveness, I found smiling faces. I also found a LOT of propaganda. There is a fear in North Korea… a fear of the United States. You see it almost everywhere you go. The looming threat of the States redirects people’s attention away from the poverty, authorities rule, and draught that currently affects the country.
I tried to make a fair video, highlighting what I saw, exactly how I saw it. I tried to translate some of the speeches told to us by the guides, and it will be up to you to interpret my perception.
To be honest, when I went to North Korea, I did not have a clear understanding of the Korean War or the divide between the North and South. In producing this video, I tried as much as I could to fact check, and actually became quite knowledgeable to the realities of the war, the people, and the places that we visited.
I’ll include my sources below, and encourage you, if you are interested, to look for yourself. I’m glad I did. (most of them started with Wikipedia and then to their subsequent sources)

The Battle of Marathon took place in 490 BC, during the first Persian invasion of Greece. It was fought between the citizens of Athens, aided by Plataea, and a Persian force commanded by Datis and Artaphernes. The battle was the culmination of the first attempt by Persia, under King Darius I, to subjugate Greece. The Greek army decisively defeated the more numerous Persians, marking a turning point in the Greco-Persian Wars.
The first Persian invasion was a response to Greek involvement in the Ionian Revolt, when Athens and Eretria had sent a force to support the cities of Ionia in their attempt to overthrow Persian rule. The Athenians and Eretrians had succeeded in capturing and burning Sardis, but they were then forced to retreat with heavy losses. In response to this raid, Darius swore to burn down Athens and Eretria. According to Herodotus, Darius asked for his bow, he placed an arrow upon the string and he discharged it upwards towards heaven, and as he shot into the air he said: "Zeus, grant me to take vengeance upon the Athenians!". Also he charged one of his servants, to say to him, every day before dinner, three times: "Master, remember the Athenians."
At the time of the battle, Sparta and Athens were the two largest city states. Once the Ionian revolt was finally crushed by the Persian victory at the Battle of Lade in 494 BC, Darius began plans to subjugate Greece. In 490 BC, he sent a naval task force under Datis and Artaphernes across the Aegean, to subjugate the Cyclades, and then to make punitive attacks on Athens and Eretrea. Reaching Euboea in mid-summer after a successful campaign in the Aegean, the Persians proceeded to besiege and capture Eretria. The Persian force then sailed for Attica, landing in the bay near the town of Marathon. The Athenians, joined by a small force from Plataea, marched to Marathon, and succeeded in blocking the two exits from the plain of Marathon. The Athenians also sent a message asking for support to the Spartans. However, at the time the Spartans were involved in a religious festival and gave this as a reason for refusing to aid the Athenians.
The Greeks could not hope to face the superior Persian cavalry; however, the location chosen was surrounded by marshes and mountains and so the cavalry was unable to join the main Persian army. Miltiades, the Greek general, ordered a general attack against the Persians. He reinforced his flanks, luring the Persians' best fighters into his centre. The inward wheeling flanks enveloped the Persians, routing them. The Persian army broke in panic towards their ships, and large numbers were slaughtered. The defeat at Marathon marked the end of the first Persian invasion of Greece, and the Persian force retreated to Asia. Darius then began raising a huge new army with which he meant to completely subjugate Greece; however, in 486 BC, his Egyptian subjects revolted, indefinitely postponing any Greek expedition. After Darius died, his son Xerxes I restarted the preparations for a second invasion of Greece, which finally began in 480 BC.
