The Persian is a major character from the Gaston Leroux novel The Phantom of the Opera. In the book he is the one who tells most of the background of Erik's history. Erik refers to him as the "daroga" (داروغه, Persian for "police-chief") and his memoirs are featured in five chapters of the novel. He is also considered Erik's only friend, Christine Daaé being his lover.
In the 1925 silent film The Phantom Of The Opera, his character was changed into a French policeman named Ledoux who had been investigating Erik for months. He still helps and accompanies Raoul to rescue Christine. In the musical, he does not appear, although aspects of his character are merged with Madame Giry's. For instance, Madame Giry shows Raoul where Erik lives, although she does not accompany him to Erik's lair.
According to his account of himself in the novel, the Persian once served as the chief of police (daroga) in the court of the Shah of Persia during the years that Erik was there. He refers to these times as "the rosy hours of Mazenderan". Being kindhearted, he helped Erik escape from Persia when the Shah ordered him executed, a trick that involved presenting a body washed up on the shore as Erik's. When news of the escape spread, the Shah-in-Shah punished the Persian by stripping him of his property and sending him into exile.

How the Persian Empire Was Built - Documentary Films The Persian Empire was created by Cyrus II, known as Cyrus the Great (559-529 BC). Cyrus first defeated another Iranian people called the Medes, then in 547 Cyrus defeated the kingdom of Lydia (in what is now Turkey) at the battle of Pterya and he became the ruler of most of Asia Minor. Soon afterwards Cyrus also defeated the Greek cities on the Turkish coast. (These had been founded by the Greeks as colonies many years before). However Cyrus adopted a policy of allowing conquered areas autonomy (a certain amount of independence) provided they paid their taxes. The Persians were also very tolerant of local religions. Later Persian rulers also followed this policy. Under Darius the Persian Empire was divided into areas called satrapies ...

Empire of the Persians In 1923 Ernst Herzfeld was the greatest living scholar of the Persian Empire, that ruled in the Middle East from 612BC until it was defeated by Alexander the Great in 330BC. That year Herzfeld set out on his last major expedition. It would last more than 10 years. It would make crucial discoveries about this misunderstood civilization, and it would end in personal disaster. A German expedition in the 1920s was of necessity small-scale, operating with little or no money. The defeated power in WWI could no longer afford such ‘luxuries’. But this was also an opportunity: the colonial powers – Britain and France – were not popular with the local governments in the region. By teaming up with oil money from America, Herzfeld could gain both political, and financial, supp...

I was high and dry like the Kansas sky
If I ached for any more I knew I'd surely die
Night after night trying to get out of my skin
Day after lonely day
You'd send me back again
I have stood inside this prison
I have touched its stony walls
I know before you try to run
You gotta learn to crawl
I tried to leave it all behind me
I drove all night just to drive all day
But the walls of this prison still surround me
And I can't break away
I held you so close I thought my soul would break
But you were just a ghost
The holiest mistake
I will not be a judge or the one to set you free
I'll just keep on drivin'
And time's a friend to me
I have stood inside this prison
I have touched its stony walls
I know before you try to run
You gotta learn to crawl
I tried to leave it all behind me
I drove all night I drove all day
But the walls of this prison still surround me
And I can't break away
The sentence has been read everything is done
I wish I could say goodbye to you
Wish I could hold the sun
My eyes are dull and burnt
And they lie to me sometimes
Cause I thought I saw you cryin'
I have stood inside this prison
I have touched its stony walls
I know before you try to run
You gotta learn to crawl
I tried to leave it all behind me
In my dreams somehow I got away
But the walls of this prison still surround me
