Plot: General Candy (Roger Livesey), who's overseeing an English squad in 1943, is a veteran leader who doesn't have the respect of the men he's training and is considered out-of-touch with what's needed to win the war. But it wasn't always this way. Flashing back to his early career in the Boer War and World War I, we see a dashing young officer whose life has been shaped by three different women (all played by Deborah Kerr), and by a lasting friendship with a German soldier.

Jung is considered the first modern psychiatrist to view the human psyche as "by nature religious" and make it the focus of exploration. Many psychological concepts were originally proposed by Jung, including the Archetype, the Collective Unconscious, the Complex, and synchronicity. A popular psychometric instrument, the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), has been principally developed from Jung's theories.

Carl Jaffe
Carl Jaffe (21 March 1902 – 12 April 1974) was a German actor. Jaffe trained on the stage in his native Hamburg, Kassel and Wiesbaden before moving to Berlin, where his career took off.
In 1933 Jaffe changed his stage name to Frank Alwar, but in 1936, with the situation for Jews in Germany rapidly deteriorating, he made the decision migrate to the United Kingdom. He remained in the UK for the rest of his life and enjoyed a prolific career, appearing in over 50 films and many television productions.
Throughout his British career he was almost invariably cast as German or Central European characters, usually in supporting roles, and often with a war, crime or espionage setting. His more notable films include The Lion Has Wings, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp, Two Thousand Women, Operation Amsterdam and The Roman Spring of Mrs. Stone. Jaffe's television credits included Danger Man, Dad's Army and Oh, Brother!.

Carl Jung
Carl Gustav Jung (/jʊŋ/; German: [ˈkarl ˈɡʊstaf jʊŋ]; 26 July 1875 – 6 June 1961), often referred to as C. G. Jung, was a Swiss psychiatrist and psychotherapist who founded analytical psychology. His work has been influential not only in psychiatry but also in philosophy, anthropology, archaeology, literature, and religious studies. He was a prolific writer, though many of his works were not published until after his death.
The central concept of analytical psychology is individuation—the psychological process of integrating the opposites, including the conscious with the unconscious, while still maintaining their relative autonomy. Jung considered individuation to be the central process of human development.
Jung created some of the best known psychological concepts, including the archetype, the collective unconscious, the complex, and extraversion and introversion.

Carl Gustav Jung was born in Kesswil, in the Swiss canton of Thurgau, on 26 July 1875 as the second and first surviving child of Paul Achilles Jung and Emilie Preiswerk. Emilie was the youngest child of Samuel Preiswerk and his wife. The senior Preiswerk was a wealthy professional man who taught Paul Achilles Jung as his professor of Hebrew. Jung's father was a poor rural pastor in the Swiss Reformed Church; his mother had grown up in a wealthy Swiss family.

Sea of Faith
The Sea of Faith Network (SoF) is an organization with the stated aim to explore and promote religious faith as a human creation.
History
The SoF movement started in 1984 as a response to Don Cupitt's book and television series, both titled Sea of Faith. Cupitt was educated in both science and theology at the University of Cambridge in the 1950s, and is a philosopher, theologian, Anglican priest, and former Dean of Emmanuel College, Cambridge. In the book and TV series, he surveyed western thinking about religion and charted a transition from traditional realist religion to the view that religion is simply a human creation.
The name Sea of Faith is taken from Matthew Arnold's nostalgic mid 19th century poem Dover Beach, in which the poet expresses regret that belief in a supernatural world is slowly slipping away; the "sea of faith" is withdrawing like the ebbing tide.
Following the television series, a small group of radical Christian clergy and laity began meeting to explore how they might promote this new understanding of religious faith. Starting with a mailing list of 143 sympathisers, they organised the first UK conference in 1988. A second conference was held in the following year shortly after which the SoF Network was officially launched. Annual national conferences have been a key event of the network ever since.

Plot: General Candy (Roger Livesey), who's overseeing an English squad in 1943, is a veteran leader who doesn't have the respect of the men he's training and is considered out-of-touch with what's needed to win the war. But it wasn't always this way. Flashing back to his early career in the Boer War and World War I, we see a dashing young officer whose life has been shaped by three different women (all played by Deborah Kerr), and by a lasting friendship with a German soldier.

Beauty, commonly accepted in the arts, is also central both in mathematics and in physics. In both disciplines one also strives to discover truth. But beauty and truth can have different meanings for a physicist and for a mathematician! We discuss how one might reconcile these contrasting views.
Bio:
Arthur M. Jaffe is the Landon T. Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science at Harvard University. His major research focuses on understanding quantum physics and the mathematics that it inspires. For his research in showing the mathematical compatibility of quantum theory with special relativity (by giving examples of non-linear fields in two and three dimensions), he received the Dannie Heineman Prize in Mathematical Physics, and the Physical Sciences Prize of the New York Academy of Science, jointly with James Glimm. In 1983 he authored the highly quoted essay “Ordering the Universe” for the US National Research Council, written to give intellectual justification for funding research in mathematics. In 1993 he wrote the essay “Theoretical Mathematics” with Frank Quinn, describing recent interactions between mathematics and theoretical physics. One year after its publication, the Bulletin of the AMS devoted an entire issue to discussion of that article.
Jaffe served as president of International Association of Mathematical Physics for two consecutive terms, and of the American Mathematical Society during 1997/1998. He conceived and guided the conception of the Clay Mathematics Institute, including serving as its first President 1998-2002, when he was responsible for the “Millennium Prize Problems in Mathematics.” Since 2005 he has chaired the Board of the DIAS School of Theoretical Physics. The lecture was held on Wednesday 18th May in the Schrodinger Lecture Theatre at Trinity College Dublin. Professor Jaffe is also Chair of the Governing Board of the School of Theoretical Physics, DIAS.
Abstract:
Beauty, commonly accepted in the arts, is also central both in mathematics and in physics. In both disciplines one also strives to discover truth. But beauty and truth can have different meanings for a physicist and for a mathematician! We discuss how one might reconcile these contrasting views.
Bio:
Arthur M. Jaffe is the Landon T. Clay Professor of Mathematics and Theoretical Science at Harvard University. His major research focuses on understanding quantum physics and the mathematics that it inspires. For his research in showing the mathematical compatibility of quantum theory with special relativity (by giving examples of non-linear fields in two and three dimensions), he received the Dannie Heineman Prize in Mathematical Physics, and the Physical Sciences Prize of the New York Academy of Science, jointly with James Glimm. In 1983 he authored the highly quoted essay “Ordering the Universe” for the US National Research Council, written to give intellectual justification for funding research in mathematics. In 1993 he wrote the essay “Theoretical Mathematics” with Frank Quinn, describing recent interactions between mathematics and theoretical physics. One year after its publication, the Bulletin of the AMS devoted an entire issue to discussion of that article.

Harry Jaffe is a brilliant award winning writer and author, and a media strategist. Harry is a Philly boy and can’t escape it. He says “I wish that I could root for the Washington Nationals but I don't like them because I'm a Phillies fan. . .” He says this even after leaving home at 17. Although he applied to several colleges, and was even recruited by Dartmouth to play Lacrosse, his Dad had the final say on where he would attend – Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA.
Back in the day, Harry tells Andy, he “played Lacrosse with wooden sticks that really hurt when you hit somebody and that was why I love lacrosse is because it's the only sport where you can legally hit somebody with a stick.”
After college Harry went to Vermont. He tells Andy he was a hippie but even so he had to make a living and went to work for the Rutland Herald as a weekend photographer in 1974. He said “it was like the hand of God came down and said ‘Harry your home.’ I adored being in that newsroom and I learned how to type I learned how to be a reporter.”
Harry Jaffe covered Pat Leahy the first-term senator from Vermont - a Watergate baby elected in 1974. In 1978, having been at the Rutland Herald long enough, Harry applied for a press secretary job with Leahy and he was hired. That’s how Harry started working in Washington DC. Not much for being Leahy’s mouthpiece, Harry left his press secretary gig in less than a year and went back to journalism.
Jaffe went to work for a non-defunct small news service, States Service, that covered Washington DC for small towns and small papers all over the country. After working for States Service, Harry freelanced pieces for the Washington. He also wrote Post Watch for the Washingtonian Magazine. Andy and Harry discuss the popularity of the column in the 90s and early 2000s. It was the most read column in the magazine. At the time, a lot of people didn’t like the Post, so when Harry wrote about the Grahams, Ben Bradley or Sallie Quinn people ate it up.
Andy and Jaffe talk about how Jaffe’s work on Post Watch was necessary to keep the Post and its writers straight and call them on issues on which they might turn a blind, or take too far.
Andy turns the conversation to books that Harry has written. The two start a conversation about Mayor Marion Barry. Harry Jaffe followed the illustrious career of the Barry family and comment that there has never been a more polarizing figure in the city than Marion Barry. In Dream City: Race, Power and the Decline of Washington, DC, Harry Jaffe and his co-author Tom Sherwood try to explain how Marion Barry came to power and stayed in power.
Jaffe continues to discuss a recent article he wrote for the Washingtonian Magazine about Christopher Barry. He describes Chris Barry’s story as a sad story due to his drug addiction. He was a young man who everyone thought would follow in his father’s footsteps, but who know one in his community helped out of his addiction.
Harry Jaffe is now writing a column for NBC4 once a week. He recently wrote a column discussing the retiring police chief Cathy Lanier and one of the last things she did as a parting shot. She announced that she was going to retire and says – by the way – our criminal justice system in Washington DC is broken beyond repair. Andy and Harry talk about how things need to change. Jaffe writes in his NBC4 column regarding the police chief and the criminal justice system in Our Town that “violent criminals stalk the streets and disrupt our communities because the criminal justice system will not identify them and lock them up for a long time.” Harry Jaffe’s column can be read on NBC4’s website.
Andy asks Harry about his book “Why Bernie Sanders Matters”. Jaffe discusses following, and writing about, Bernie Sanders. From his days at the Rutland Herald, Jaffe remembers seeing Bernie Sanders in political debates on TV. “In 1974, 75 and 76 occasionally I'd look up on the TV and they would be at a political debate there be an upstanding guy Republican running for governor and upstanding Democrat running for governor and then there’d be this guy with curly hair big thick glasses sweating bullets talking about socialism and imperialism to Vermont. Everybody thought it was a joke. He became Mayor of Burlington and then right to Congress and then right to the Senate. He’s a brand. Since the mid-20th century, a variety of social, economic and political factors have affected the cultural practices and conceptions of identity on the Mediterranean island of Corsica. Linguistic anthropologist Alexandra Jaffe discusses the Corsican language and Corsican expressive culture. She addresses both the island's shift towards the French language and the Corsican language revitalization movement that began in the early 1970s. Drawing on ethnographic data, Jaffe offers examples of continued use of the Corsican language in traditional cultural forms, such as thepaghjella musical tradition, and poetic jousts called chjam e rispondi as well as in the use of Corsican in newer media and artistic genres such as novels, plays, bilingual radio, television and advertising. The talk focuses on cultural continuity and change in response to changing political and economic circumstances.

Sam (Patrick Swayze) terrifies Willie (Rick Aviles) who meets a tragic end.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
An interesting hybrid of popular film genres, Ghost showcases the talents of its entire cast. While out on the town one evening, New York couple Sam (Patrick Swayze) and Molly (Demi Moore) are confronted by a mugger. After submitting to his demands, Sam is murdered anyway. He then finds himself a disembodied spirit, invisible to the living world, wandering without hope until he finds a spiteful spirit aboard the subway (Vincent Schiavelli) who gives him some helpful pointers on how to co-exist. Soon Sam comes back into contact with those he knew in life, and he begins to learn piece-by-piece of his close friend and co-worker Carl's (Tony Goldwyn) embezzling plot which caused his death; the apparent mugging was, in fact, a premeditated murder. In the meantime, Carl has designs on Molly, and Sam is determined to extract revenge. He contacts a psychic (Whoopi Goldberg), and together, the two set out to serve justice and stop the maniacal Carl from getting to Molly. In 1977 Willie Ruff and John Rodgers created a sonic realization of Johannnes Kepler's planetary data laid out in his 1619 treatise, "Harmonices Mundi" (Harmony of the World).
Kepler proved that the planets orbits were not perfect circles but ellipses. Differing from, but building upon ancient theories of "The Music of the Spheres" -- the idea that the planets, in both their proportions and circular orbits create cosmic music -- Kepler notated the elliptical periods of each planet on a musical staff.
For example, Mercury, the highest pitched (the shortest orbital period) spans a minor 10th. Earth's orbit, on the other hand, is nearly circular, spanning only a minor second (G-Ab). Kepler poetically postulated in the margins of his treatise that "The Earth sings MI FA MI, so that even from these syllables you may guess that in this home of ours MIsery and FAmine prevail"
In the Ruff and Rodgers realization, the slower frequencies of the outer (post-Keplerian) planets, Uranus, Neptune and (at the time) Pluto, are perceived, not as tones but as rhythmic beats.
I met with Willie at the Yale School of Music in the spring of 2013 to talk about the original Kepler project and his plans for revisiting it with Scott Petersen in the near future.
