Anxiety is an emotion characterized by an unpleasant state of inner turmoil, often accompanied by nervous behavior, such as pacing back and forth, somatic complaints and rumination. It is the subjectively unpleasant feelings of dread over anticipated events, such as the feeling of imminent death. Anxiety is not the same as fear, which is a response to a real or perceived immediate threat, whereas anxiety is the expectation of future threat. Anxiety is a feeling of fear, uneasiness, and worry, usually generalized and unfocused as an overreaction to a situation that is only subjectively seen as menacing. It is often accompanied by muscular tension, restlessness, fatigue and problems in concentration. Anxiety can be appropriate, but when experienced regularly the individual may suffer from an anxiety disorder.
People facing anxiety may withdraw from situations which have provoked anxiety in the past. There are various types of anxiety. Existential anxiety can occur when a person faces angst, an existential crisis, or nihilistic feelings. People can also face mathematical anxiety, somatic anxiety, stage fright, or test anxiety. Social anxiety and stranger anxiety are caused when people are apprehensive around strangers or other people in general. Furthermore, anxiety has been linked with physical symptoms such as IBS and can heighten other mental health illnesses such as OCD and panic disorder.
Dharma ([dʱəɾmə]; Sanskrit: धर्म dharma, listen ; Pali: धम्म dhamma) is a key concept with multiple meanings in the Indian religions Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. There is no single word translation for dharma in western languages.
In Hinduism, dharma signifies behaviours that are considered to be in accord with rta, the order that makes life and universe possible, and includes duties, rights, laws, conduct, virtues and ‘‘right way of living’’. In Buddhism dharma means "cosmic law and order", but is also applied to the teachings of the Buddha. In Buddhist philosophy, dhamma/dharma is also the term for "phenomena".Dharma in Jainism refers to the teachings of tirthankara (Jina) and the body of doctrine pertaining to the purification and moral transformation of human beings. For Sikhs, the word dharm means the "path of righteousness".
The Classical Sanskrit noun dharma is a derivation from the root dhṛ, which has a meaning of "to hold, maintain, keep". The word "dharma" was already in use in the historical Vedic religion, and its meaning and conceptual scope has evolved over several millennia. The antonym of dharma is adharma.
Joseph Goldstein (born 1944) is one of the first American vipassana teachers, co-founder of the Insight Meditation Society (IMS) with Jack Kornfield and Sharon Salzberg, contemporary author of numerous popular books on Buddhism (see publications below), resident guiding teacher at IMS, and leader of retreats worldwide on insight (vipassana) and lovingkindness (metta) meditation.
While the majority of Goldstein's publications introduce Westerners to primarily Theravada concepts, practices and values, his 2002 work, One Dharma, explored the creation of an integrated framework for the Theravada, Tibetan and Zen traditions.
Public Talk: Dealing with Depression and Anxiety Thursday 3 April at 7.00pm- with Lama Choedak Rinpoche When His Holiness the Dalai Lama first visited the west he was shocked by people who experienced depressive feelings and a sense of inadequacy. His Holiness regularly observes that despite extraordinary benefits brought on by material progress and physical health, people can be left feeling vulnerable and insecure dealing with daily life's ups and downs. The darkness of depression is experienced by many of us, if not personally, then probably by someone we love impacting on our relationships, families, workplaces and community. A great deal of resources have been directed into raising public awareness around depression, but how much of this condition is well understood by modern resea...

A dharma talk on how to work with anxiety and fear in meditation practice. "I stayed in the sort of places that are awe-inspiring and make your hair stand on end, such as park-shrines, forest-shrines, & tree-shrines. And while I was staying there a wild animal would come, or a bird would make a twig fall, or wind would rustle the fallen leaves. The thought would occur to me: 'Is this that fear & terror coming?' Then the thought occurred to me: 'Why do I just keep waiting for fear? What if I were to subdue fear & terror in whatever state they come?' So when fear & terror came while I was walking back & forth, I would not stand or sit or lie down. I would keep walking back & forth until I had subdued that fear & terror. When fear & terror came while I was standing, I would not walk or sit...

Check out this video from our girl Chloe earlier this week! It is good indication of what we can do in a short time with these training tools. Also how pressure/release style training it's unlike any other training. It has the ability to help a dog on so many levels, emotionally and physically! Chloe has been through positive reward based training classes and also sessions with another trainer who was unaware of how to properly use a training collar and started out with forced based corrections. Two different ends of the training spectrum. Neither of which is how we train! We take a balanced approach and TEACH the dog what is expected by applying pressure and relieving the pressure when the dog has complied. This results in CLEAR communication for the dog and you can clearly see that in t...
A great dharma talk on opening to fear and anxiety and how to work with it in meditation practice. You can remind yourself of the noble persons who have walked this path before you. This path is no dusty byway. Buddhas from time immemorial, the silent Buddhas, the great disciples, the arahants, all the rest of the noble ones, all have walked here. If you want to share this distinguished path, fortify yourself with dignity and be diligent. No room for cowards or the lazy; this is a road for heroes and heroines. You might say to yourself: "People of distinction have walked this path, and I must try to live up to their company. I can't be sloppy here. I shall walk with as much care as possible, fearlessly. I have this chance to belong to a great family, the group of distinguished people w...

Our western culture turns away from death, often moving the elderly and ill to nursing homes so that this final and perhaps most significant event of our lives is hidden. As a result, most people are very uncomfortable contemplating death, either abstractly or personally. Anxiety abounds in our society, with the largest, deepest fear being that of death. In this Dharma talk, teacher Fred Eppsteiner talks about the importance of looking at death, and the promise for liberation that a deep understanding and acceptance of death offers.
