HP Autonomy -- Meaning Based Computer Technology Overview

The trick is mining through the data and HP Autonomy does just that. Joining me to tell how your company can benefit from HP Autonomy is Robert Young Johns, senior vice president and general manager of HP Autonomy. Welcome Robert. Great Daniel thanks for having me. So let's start off by talking about the software and solutions space and what Autonomy soles for customers exactly. Autonomy solves really 3 classes of customer problem and one is very deep information analytic particularly against unstructured data sources. It's a really fast growing are it's the one you alluded to in your introduction and it's a really interesting business for us. Secondly we have a bunch of products on what we call a digital experience. This is web content management and how you help our customers better target users as they access their websites. And the third business is what we call information governance which really is very fancy word for describing everything from backup to recovery to archiving, e-discovery, content management and so on. Those are the 3 big businesses we're in. Ok, now Autonomy's big differentiator is something called idol. Explain that to viewers first of all if you will and then tell us how it sets HP apart from other enterprise partners. Yea idol is a platform for trying to extract meaning from unstructured data and its one of the big challenges of the industry. You know unlike most structured people are aware of, it's hard to try and get the meaning of an email or the meaning of a video stream, and idols very good at doing that. Idol is a platform that exposes a bunch of services that application can take use of. And interestingly if you combine Vertica to part of the HP software family, you've really got very very good coverage of the big data market, Vertica going after highly structured streaming data types, and idol going after the much more unstructured, what we call human information. Where does the name come from? I'm just curious. It stands for the Intelligent Data Operating layer. Like most of these names it got lost in the midst of time. Lets talk about customer successes. Obviously one of your top priorities, can you share an example of how Autonomy technology helps customers to maximize their return on information a different ROI. There are a couple of different examples one is the banking industry and it's a really interesting one because one of the things we do is help banks in their efforts to be compliant and to conform to all the regulatory requirements that they have. So we build extremely big messaging archives for some of the banks. So if they ever have a challenge they can go into those archives and the smoking guns will hopefully not be smoking guns over time. We will work with Morgan Stanley in fact and I think they have over a trillion messages now archived with us, and its all helping them achieve what they say is one of their number one strategic objectives that's to maintain absolute compliance with the regulatory environment. So that's an example in the archiving space and the web content digital experience space. A very good example of where we've use our analytic tools to help them optimize their web properties get better traction with customers and they've achieved a really noticeable and measurable increase in the returns they get from their websites as a result of doing that. That's a great example with the banking industry. I can't even imagine how much data we're talking about. Its interesting if you talk to a CIO, you know a couple years ago they would say risk management or trading systems are my top priority, today almost uniformly its always I want to make sure I'm compliant. Lets talk about some examples of technology integration between HP and Autonomy. Yea one of the things I've been very impressed with in my relatively short time with Autonomy is the appetite that the rest of HP has had using some of our technologies. A great example was talked about earlier today when we talked about HP printers and HP flow is actually an Autonomy product and it helped our customers manage work flows in the cloud from the moment they scan a document to the moment they print it again. It's a great example of how we added real value to a printing solution with HP software. Other examples are in the storage area, we're working with the storage division very carefully, also very closely to look at how we can use the Autonomy idol platform to help optimize the use of storage.
