David Scott

David Randolph "Dave" Scott (born June 6, 1932), (Col, USAF, Ret.), is an American engineer, retired U.S. Air Force officer, former test pilot, and former NASA astronaut. He belonged to the third group of NASA astronauts, selected in October 1963. As an astronaut, Scott became the seventh person to walk on the Moon.

Before becoming an astronaut, Scott graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point and joined the United States Air Force. He graduated from the Air Force Experimental Test Pilot School (Class of 1963) and Aerospace Research Pilot School (Class of 1964). Scott retired from the Air Force in 1975 with the rank of colonel, and more than 5,600 hours of logged flying time.

As an astronaut, Scott made his first flight into space as pilot of the Gemini 8 mission, along with Neil Armstrong, in March 1966, spending just under eleven hours in low Earth orbit. Scott then spent ten days in orbit as Command Module Pilot aboard Apollo 9, his second spaceflight, along with Commander James McDivitt and Lunar Module Pilot Rusty Schweickart. During this mission, Scott became the last American to fly solo in Earth orbit (not counting subsequent untethered EVAs). Scott made his third and final flight into space as commander of the Apollo 15 mission, the fourth human lunar landing, becoming the seventh person to walk on the Moon and the first person to drive on the Moon.

David Scott (Royal Navy officer)

Rear-Admiral Sir David Scott K.B.E., C.B (5 April 1921 – 20 January 2006) was an officer in the Royal Navy from 1937 to 1980. He was second in command and served as a first lieutenant aboard HMS Seraph during Operation Mincemeat. Scott served on ten submarines in peace and war, commanding five of them. Scott was a popular officer noted for his gentlemanly way with subordinates and his sharp sense of humour.

The Second World War

Scott was at sea in the battleship HMS Revenge at the outbreak of war, he took part in convoy operations and the bombardment of Cherbourg, during the period when invasion threatened. Transferring to submarines, he served in three small and old-fashioned boats before his time in HMS Seraph. His first command was the submarine HMS Umbra, training new commanding officers, and then, towards the end of the war, Vulpine and Satyr.

Operation Mincemeat

With lieutenant Bill Jewell in command, had not only a successful record in sinking shipping in dangerous Mediterranean waters but also a reputation for clandestine operations. It was Seraph that landed General Mark Clark on the Algerian coast for consultations with French authorities prior to the North African invasion, and smuggled General Giraud out of the South of France to join the Allies in Algiers. She made several supply drops for Italian partisans and survived many depth charge attacks, including one direct hit.

David Scott is an author with a special interest in religion and culture. He has published several books, including studies of Mother Teresa of Calcutta and Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker movement. Hundreds of his essays and articles have appeared in journals and periodicals throughout the world, including the Vatican newspaper, L’Osservatore Romano, as well as National Review, Commonweal, Crisis, Inside the Vatican, National Catholic Register, Washington Report on Middle East Affairs, Beliefnet.com and elsewhere.

Scott’s most recent book is "The Love That Made Mother Teresa" (Sophia Institute Press). His previous books include: The Catholic Passion: Rediscovering the Power and Beauty of the Faith (Loyola Press, 2005).,Praying in the Presence of the Lord with Dorothy Day (Our Sunday Visitor, 2002), and Weapons of the Spirit: The Selected Writings of Father John Hugo (Our Sunday Visitor, 1997), co–written with Mike Aquilina.

Scott was born in Akron, Ohio in 1961. He holds a master's degree in religion and scripture from Pittsburgh Theological Seminary. He is married to Sarah and the couple has five children.

David Scott (Pearlfishers)

David Scott is the leader of the Scottish pop group Pearlfishers.

Scott has been the main songwriter, producer and vocalist of Pearlfishers since their inception. Scott is also a member of BMX Bandits. He has produced recordings and played with a wide range of artists including Amy Allison, Alex Chilton, Yeon Gene Wang, Ricky Ross, Maher Shalal Hash Baz and Bill Wells.

Scott also works as a broadcaster on BBC Radio fronting music documentaries and also has contributed music to many theatre productions in Scotland and co-organised all star tribute shows to Brian Wilson, Ennio Morricone and Serge Gainsbourg. David is a Lecturer in the School of Creative and Cultural Industries at the University of the West of Scotland and is the Programme Leader for their MA in Songwriting and Performance.

Flash Element TD

Flash Element TD is a Flash-based tower defense browser game created by David Scott in January 2007. The game had been played over 140 million times as of March 2009.

Development

David Scott got the inspiration for Flash Element TD in 2006. He noticed that no one had created a Tower Defense game using Flash and only started work on Flash Element TD as a technical exercise to see if it was possible. The map and name is based on the "Element TD" map created for the real-time strategy game Warcraft III by Brian Powers and Evan Hatampour, David Scott created a much simpler version of the map that could be played using only a browser. The game was launched in January 2007 and still has growth to this day.

Originally, the game was promoted through the web service StumbleUpon. It eventually found its way onto several Flash game sites, four years later can be found on 25,950 sites and has had over 183 million views.

Updates

The original release version of the game, version 1.0 was released on January 12, 2007. New versions were uploaded daily, with the final version released on January 22. Flash Element TD has not been updated since and still increases in popularity some two years on. In December 2007, Scott and Paul Preece also created the Casual Collective, whose flagship game was a multiplayer version of Desktop Tower Defense. On January 12, 2008, one year after its release, version 2 was released.

David Scott (of Dunninald)

David Scott (27 February 1746 – 4 October 1805) was a Scottish merchant and director of the East India Company, and a Member of Parliament (MP). He sat in the House of Commons of Great Britain from 1790 to 1800, and in the House of Commons of the United Kingdom until his death.

Career

Scott was born in early 1746 at the family home, Dunninald House in the parish of Craig, Angus to Robert Scott (1705–1780), the laird of Dunninald, and his wife, Ann. He was educated at the University of St Andrews, before seeking his fortune in India. He built up a substantial merchant business in Bombay before moving to London in 1786 to direct the English end of his business. He became a director of the East India Company in 1788.

Parliament

At the 1790 general election he was elected unopposed as the MP for Forfarshire, but resigned that seat in early 1796 to contest a by-election in the Perth Burghs, where he was returned unopposed in March 1796. He was re-elected at the general election later in 1796, and held the seat until his death in Cheltenham on 4 October 1805, aged 59, after a long and severe illness.
