A hike to the "Outlaw Cabin" located in the Wasatch Mountains of Utah. This loop-hike starts and ends at the Orson Smith Trailhead in Draper Utah -- ascending on the Cherry Canyon Logging Trail and descending on the Trail of The Eagle. Round-trip distance is approximately 12.25 miles; with an elevation gain to the cabin of approximately 5,300'. I strongly recommend carrying a minimum of 2 liters of water per person on this hike. Hiking poles are also a plus, and don't forget sunblock. I hope this video is helpful for those of you who have heard of the cabin but where not quite sure how to get there. Further information on the cabin can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lone_Peak#Outlaw_Cabin.
The music is: Air On A G String (Bach) This is a higher quality copy of a previous upload, with different music. This is one photograph (actually seven stitched together) of the Wasatch Mountains from the top of peak 9,990 at The Canyons Ski Resort. Seven photos stitched together creates a huge file and it would be easily possible to print this 50 feet long or more. Starting on the left, you can see Brighton and Solitude in Big Cottonwood Canyon. More in the background are parts of Alta, Snowbird and Little Cottonwood Canyon.

The product of 20 million years of geologic faulting, volcanic activity, and glaciation, the Wasatch Mountains, the western range of the Rocky Mountains, stretch across Utah from the Bear River in the north to Mount Nebo near Nephi in central part of the state. Most elevations along the range are generally between 9,000 and 10,000 feet; Mount Nebo is the highest peak at 11,877 feet. Some of the other significant peaks from north to south include Willard Peak, Mount Ogden, Bountiful Peak, Mount Olympus, Lone Peak, Mount Timpanogos, Provo Peak, Spanish Fork Peak, and Loafer Mountain. Since the earliest days of Mormon settlement, the majority of Utah's population has chosen to settle along the range's western front, where numerous river drainages exit the mountains. The mountains were a vit...

Enjoy an hour of gliding and soaring Utah's spectacular Oquirrh and southern Wasatch Mountains with pilot Bruno Vassel IV (B4) flying an ASW-27B 15 meter high performance sailplane sailplane. This was an October day with very stable air so no thermals, however, the winds were from the west and I was able to fly the lift created from the wind hitting the western-facing mountain ridges. The mountains shown in this video starts with the very south end of the Oquirrh range. The next shot is near the base of Mount Timpanogos where I need to ridge soar back and forth a few times before reaching the peak which is over 12,000 feet high. I then head south past Provo Canyon to Y mountain. I head back up north until I fly in the mountains above the city of Alpine, Utah and finish off flying ov...

Standing guard over the Utah-Wyoming border the massive cliffs of the Wasatch Mountains divide the rolling grasslands to the east from the salt deserts to the west. The immense features once echoed the bark of the largest steam locomotives on earth. Today they reverberate with the drumming of mighty diesels climbing the Wasatch grade. In this program we will explore the Union Pacific’s Evanston Subdivision between Ogden, Utah and Green River, Wyoming. This is the classic grade over the Wasatch Mountains where the Big Boy’s once roamed. Highlights include scenic Weber and Echo Canyons, monster 200 car manifests cresting the summit at Wahsatch, and cleaning up a derailment at Peru that wiped out both main tracks. As a bonus, see historic footage of Big Boy 4014’s return to the Wasatch gra...

Not too long ago I was thinking about the concept of public lands and some of the reasoning used for the need for having good plans for the future. It stemmed from a thought that the more people enjoy and visit an area the greater the risk that it will be, "loved to death". This lead to a Google search to see what kinds of ideas are floating around out there on this idea of what an article from Science Magazine in 1968 called, "the tragedy of the commons". It's an interesting read but goes beyond the scope of what I was trying to figure out and begins looking at the issues related to the broad issue of population growth. The question that that article posed that seems most relevant to the conversations we often have about public lands was whether or not we live in a finite world. My po...
