Even though Miley Cyrus may have made the word "twerk" mainstream after her performance at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2013, she's definitely not the creator of the word.
Oxford English Dictionary, which just added the word, says "twerk" actually dates all the way back to the year 1820.
But this doesn't mean ladies and gents were getting down low, like Beyonce, all those years ago. (Video via Columbia Records / Beyonce)
According to the dictionary, back in the 1800s, the word was spelled with an "i" instead of an "e" and it meant "a twitching, twisting, or jerking motion."
The Washington Post reports the first instance found of the word was in a letter written to Mary Shelley, the author of "Frankenstein," by her stepbrother.
Today's more commonly known definition didn't quite come into existence until the 1990s, the dictionary says.
Now, the Oxford English Dictionary is kind of late to the party when it comes to adding the word "twerk" to its collection.
Dictionary.com and Oxford Dictionaries, which is not the same as Oxford English Dictionary, both added the term in 2013.
Oxford English Dictionary also added the words "retweet," "go fish" and "yarn bombing." 2015 — what a time to be alive.

Andover at Work in the 1820s:
A Community Working Together
For the past thirty years, the Andover Historical Society has been a cornerstone of education in Andover, hosting thousands of students as part of its premier education program Andover at Work in the 1820's. Over 500 students visit the Andover Historical Society every year. This long-running program provides a rich and engaging opportunity for children to learn while meeting town and Massachusetts State curriculum standards.
Andover at Work in the 1820s immerses students in the atmosphere of early nineteenth century Andover, giving them an opportunity to become historical Andover citizens and engage in actions and occupations of the past through hands-on activities. After assuming the identity of a historic Andover residents, dressing for their roles, and reviewing a historic map of Andover, students visit several stations throughout the Historical Society that tell the story of how a community worked together in the 1820s.
While visiting the Andover Historical Society, students view life like it would have been in the 1820s at the home of Amos Blanchard, the cashier at the Andover Bank, whose home was also open to boarders from Phillips Academy. Students are lead by education volunteers wearing reproduction period costumes as they journey into the past and see how our community has changed. Students stop to grind spices for the midday meal in the kitchen and practice their best manners in the parlor. After visiting the barn to collect eggs and see what work was done throughout the seasons, students learn to barter and trade at the general store. At the print shop, students lend a hand and use a historic printing press. As an example of a community working together, students join a bucket brigade to help save a neighbor's home from fire, and they see one of the first fire engines, an 1829 Hunneman Hand Tub. During Andover at Work in the 1820s students, learn about how their town worked as a community and how each individual played an integral role in ensuring that the community thrived.
Without children, Andover at Work in the 1820s would not be possible, but without a crew of dedicated education volunteers, Andover at Work in the 1820s would not be a cornerstone program of the Andover Historical Society and a significant educational resource in Andover. Participating in Andover at Work is fun and offers a variety of benefits, one of which is an opportunity to continue learning. Andover at Work mentors and the Andover Historical Society Museum Educator offer training for new volunteers on relating more than 360 years of local history to students. As an education volunteer, you can step back in time and lead hands-on activities as well as fulfill a role as an educational leader in the community.
Andover at Work volunteers participate in the program eight to ten mornings throughout April, May, and June. With over twenty-five visiting classes, and over eighty opportunities to participate, Andover at Work in the 1820s is a flexible volunteer opportunity for people who enjoy working with children and have an interest in local history. Join us as part of our school program Andover at Work in the 1820s and support Andover community history for generations to come.

The Java War (also known as the "Diponegoro War") was fought in Java between 1825 and 1830. It started as a rebellion led by Prince Diponegoro after the Dutch decided to build a road across a piece of his property that contained his parents' tomb.
The troops of Prince Diponegoro were very successful in the beginning, controlling the middle of Java and besieging Yogyakarta. Furthermore, the Javanese population was supportive of Prince Diponegoro's cause, whereas the Dutch colonial authorities were initially very indecisive. As the Java war prolonged, Prince Diponegoro had difficulties in maintaining the numbers of his troops. Prince Diponegoro started a fierce guerrilla war and it was not until 1827 that the Dutch army gained the upper hand. The Dutch colonial army was able to fill its ranks with troops from Sulawesi, and later on from the Netherlands.

Miley Cyrus
Miley Ray Cyrus (born Destiny Hope Cyrus; November 23, 1992) is an American singer, songwriter, and actress. Born and raised in Franklin, Tennessee, she held minor roles in the television series Doc and the film Big Fish in her childhood. Cyrus became a teen idol for her portrayal of the starring character Miley Stewart in the Disney Channel television series Hannah Montana in 2006; her father Billy Ray Cyrus additionally starred in the show. Cyrus subsequently signed a recording contract with Hollywood Records; her debut studio album Meet Miley Cyrus (2007) was certified quadruple-platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for exceeding four million shipments. Cyrus released her second album Breakout and launched her film career as a voice actress in the animated film Bolt in 2008.
Cyrus starred in the feature film Hannah Montana: The Movie and began cultivating a maturing image with her EP The Time of Our Lives in 2009. In 2010, she released her third album Can't Be Tamed, which stands as the lowest-selling record of her career, and starred in the coming-of-age film The Last Song. During production of the movie, she began an on-again, off-again relationship with her co-star Liam Hemsworth. Cyrus focused on her acting career with several television and film appearances in 2011 and 2012. Her sexually explicit behavior generated widespread controversy while promoting her fourth album Bangerz (2013), her first under her recording contract with RCA Records. Cyrus' independently-released fifth studio album Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz (2015) deviated from her traditional pop style for more psychedelic experimentation.

A Community Working Together
For the past thirty years, the Andover Historical Society has been a cornerstone of education in Andover, hosting thousands of students as part of its premier education program Andover at Work in the 1820's. Over 500 students visit the Andover Historical Society every year. This long-running program provides a rich and engaging opportunity for children to learn while meeting town and Massachusetts State curriculum standards.
Andover at Work in the 1820s immerses students in the atmosphere of early nineteenth century Andover, giving them an opportunity to become historical Andover citizens and engage in actions and occupations of the past through hands-on activities. After assuming the identity of a historic Andover residents, dressing for their roles, and reviewing a historic map of Andover, students visit several stations throughout the Historical Society that tell the story of how a community worked together in the 1820s.
While visiting the Andover Historical Society, students view life like it would have been in the 1820s at the home of Amos Blanchard, the cashier at the Andover Bank, whose home was also open to boarders from Phillips Academy. Students are lead by education volunteers wearing reproduction period costumes as they journey into the past and see how our community has changed. Students stop to grind spices for the midday meal in the kitchen and practice their best manners in the parlor. After visiting the barn to collect eggs and see what work was done throughout the seasons, students learn to barter and trade at the general store. At the print shop, students lend a hand and use a historic printing press. As an example of a community working together, students join a bucket brigade to help save a neighbor's home from fire, and they see one of the first fire engines, an 1829 Hunneman Hand Tub. During Andover at Work in the 1820s students, learn about how their town worked as a community and how each individual played an integral role in ensuring that the community thrived.
Without children, Andover at Work in the 1820s would not be possible, but without a crew of dedicated education volunteers, Andover at Work in the 1820s would not be a cornerstone program of the Andover Historical Society and a significant educational resource in Andover. Participating in Andover at Work is fun and offers a variety of benefits, one of which is an opportunity to continue learning. Andover at Work mentors and the Andover Historical Society Museum Educator offer training for new volunteers on relating more than 360 years of local history to students. As an education volunteer, you can step back in time and lead hands-on activities as well as fulfill a role as an educational leader in the community.
Andover at Work volunteers participate in the program eight to ten mornings throughout April, May, and June. With over twenty-five visiting classes, and over eighty opportunities to participate, Andover at Work in the 1820s is a flexible volunteer opportunity for people who enjoy working with children and have an interest in local history.
