Zola Pieterse (born 26 May 1966), née Zola Budd, is a middle-distance and long-distance runner. She competed at the 1984 Olympic Games for Great Britain and the 1992 Olympic Games for South Africa, both times in the 3000 metres. In 1984 (unratified) and 1985, she broke the world record in the women's 5000 metres. She was also a two-time winner at the World Cross Country Championships (1985-1986). Budd's career was unusual in that she mainly trained and raced barefoot. Since 2008 she has been living in South Carolina with her three children, competing at marathons and ultramarathons. She volunteers as assistant coach at Coastal Carolina University in Conway.
Budd, who was born in Bloemfontein, Orange Free State, South Africa achieved fame in 1984, at the age of 17, when she broke the women's 5000 m world record with a time of 15:01.83. Since her performance took place in South Africa, then excluded from international athletics competition because of its apartheid policy, the International Amateur Athletics Federation (IAAF) refused to ratify Budd's time as an official world record.

'a landmark race for me', as Zola described it. An amazing race by Zola Budd, Christine Benning and Christina Boxer, at the Crystal Palace on the 13th July 1984, Zola's final race before the Olympics in 1984
1st race after 84 olympics
Number 100 from the channel 4 show 100 Greatest Sporting Moments,In the 1984 Olympics, held in Los Angeles, California, the media billed the 3000 m race as a duel between Budd and American world champion Mary Decker, few reporting that a third contestant, Romanian Maricica Puică, had set the fastest time that year. Decker set a fast pace from the gun with Budd in close pursuit, followed by Puică and Britain's Wendy Smith-Sly. When the pace slowed just past the midway point, Budd took the lead on the straight and ran wide of the pack around the turn. Setting the pace, she took herself, Decker, Smith-Sly and Puică clear of the pack, an unusual situation for both Budd and Decker, both of whom were used to running in front and well ahead. At 1700 metres, the first collision occurred. Decker ...
One of the most famous races in history. With British commentary, 10/8/84
Collision Course – the Olympic Tragedy of Mary Decker and Zola Budd – is written by Jason Henderson and published by Birlinn. More details, see http://amzn.to/2a4bobT Mary Decker's clash with Zola Budd at the 1984 Games is one of the most controversial events in Olympic history. In a head-to-head that gripped the imagination of the world, the 3000m race pitted the experienced and glamorous world champion from the host nation against a prodigious, teenage waif from South Africa wearing a hastily-organised British flag on her vest and, memorably, no shoes on her feet. Disastrously, a mid-race collision saw Decker tumble to the inside of the track after her legs tangled with Budd as the 18-year-old overtook the American in a battle for pole position. Distraught and unable to carry on, the ...
Zola Budd, former cross country champion and world record holder for 5000 meters while in her teens, has apparently passed a considerable amount of that distance-running talent on to her daughter, Lisa Pieterse. Last spring, as a sophomore at Carolina Forest High School in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Pieterse was a 3200-meter run Class AAAA state champion. According to her recent race times, she's developed a great deal in the ensuing months. In mid-September, Pieterse ran at the Coastal Carolina Invitational in Conway and covered 5-K in 18:35, demolishing the former high school course record of 20:07. This, despite the fact she'd been so ill the day before that "I didn't even know if I was going to run," she told myhorrynews.com. "I think I came down with a cold. There was a headache ...

Sleepy head isn't it time that you were in your bed?
The sandman will be coming soon, with a dream or two
Perhaps tomorrow they will all come true
Ooh sleepy head whispering all the things that we left unsaid
And so it's time to make your weary way into a brand new day, tomorrow
The little pigs were certain that the wolf was here to stay
But in your dreams you'll chase that wolf away
Hey Sleepy head the princess has been saved and the dragon's dead
Goodnight, and may God keep you in his sight
