America’s Navy has a long, proud tradition that stretches back more than 230 years to the days of the Revolutionary War.
This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy.
Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy.
In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949.
He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject.
After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960.
So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran.
Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

McHale's Navy
These are the adventures of the misfit crew of PT-73 during World War II. They're one of the best fighting crews in the Navy, but break regulations when it suits them. Their commander, LCDR McHale, is at times as roguish as his crew, but he puts his foot down when things go too far. They are assigned an XO, Ensign Parker, who is by-the-book, but too much of a klutz to command too much respect. They have a house-boy Fuji, who deserted the Japanese Navy, who wears a POW outfit just in case he's caught so he won't be shot at. Their nemesis is CAPT Binghamton and his aide LT Carpenter. They're initially stationed in the South Pacific, but move to Italy in the last season.

This is Five Things You Don’t Know About the US Navy.
Fact One: While everyone knows Neil Armstrong’s role in the 1969 moon landing, his service to our nation actually began with a stint in the US Navy.
In August 1947, Armstrong enlisted in the US Naval Reserve. He reported for active duty in February 1949.
He then went on to fly 78 missions as a naval aviator during the Korean War – many of which were as an armed reconnaissance pilot. In fact, on September 3rd, 1952, while flying a Grumman F9F Panther, Armstrong was hit by anti-aircraft fire. Although he was able to fly the plane back to friendly territory, it was so severely damaged that he was forced to eject.
After completing his tour of duty in Korea, Armstrong opted to stay in the US Naval Reserves for another 8 years, finally resigning in 1960.
So, the first man to set foot on the moon was actually a US Navy veteran.
Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

Fact Two: Although the “Silent Service” represented less than 2% of all naval personnel during World War II, they accounted for the highest casualty percentage of all armed forces.
Throughout the course of the war, 52 US Navy submarines were lost, taking with them more than 3,500 officers and enlisted men. Those losses average out to approximately 22% of all submariners being killed in action.
Fact Three: Today the 21-gun Salute is fired in honor of the President, ex-President and President-elect of the United States, as well as to honor a national flag or the chief of state or sovereign of a foreign nation.
The tradition of the salute, however, actually dates back to the time of wooden warships. When approaching a port, the ship would fire all of its cannons out to sea as a means of showing it was disarmed and therefore not a threat.
Fact Four: While the US Navy recognizes its birthday as October 13th, 1775, it does not take an official stance on its birthplace. As a matter of fact, no less than six American towns and cities actually lay claim to the title.
Included on the list is Machias, Maine, who claims the distinction because that’s where a small sloop armed with American woodsmen seized a Royal Navy schooner on June the 12th 1775.
Beverly, Massachusetts and Marblehead, Massachusetts, have a competing claim that centers around the fact that in September 1775 General George Washington ordered the schooner Hannah fitted out as the first armed sea vessel of the American Revolution. Because the Hannah was outfitted in Beverly, but the captain and crew hailed from Marblehead, both towns claim to be the ship’s homeport, and therefore the Navy’s birthplace.
In addition to these three, Providence, Rhode Island also claims the title because their residents were the first to propose a resolution to build and equip an American fleet in October 1775.
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, claims to be the birthplace because that’s where the Continental Congress met on October 13th, when it voted to establish the Continental Navy and resolved to build two armed vessels.
And finally, Whitehall, New York, claims the distinction because that’s where the first ships were actually built in the summer of 1776.
Fact Five: The current US Navy leads the world in terms of size, strength and global reach. However, in comparison to its peak strength during World War II, today’s Navy is downright tiny.
Remarkably, between 1941 and 1945 alone, the US Navy added nearly 6,000 ships to its total strength. This included an impressive 27 aircraft carriers, 77 escort carriers and more than 360 destroyers.
Including the battleships, cruisers, destroyer escorts, transports and countless other vessels, this amounted to a peak strength of more than 6,700 operational ships during the war.

The Navy SEAL Training Program: The Start of Hell Week
First Phase, the basic conditioning phase, is seven weeks long and develops the class in physical training, water competency and mental tenacity while continuing to build teamwork. Each week, the class is expected to do more running, swimming and calisthenics than the week before, and each man's performance is measured by a four-mile timed run, a timed obstacle course, and a two-mile timed swim. In addition to physical training, the class also learns how to conduct hydrographic survey operations.
Because of its particularly challenging requirements, many candidates begin questioning their decision to come to BUD/S during First Phase, with a significant number deciding to Drop on Request (DOR).
Historically, candidates who have composite PST scores below 800 are three times more likely to succeed than the average student. Most importantly, candidates who have made a full commitment to their goal of becoming a SEAL and those who decide ahead of time that quitting is not an option, regardless of how challenging the training becomes, dramatically increase their chances.
The fourth week of training is known as Hell Week. In this grueling five-and-a-half day stretch, each candidate sleeps only about four total hours but runs more than 200 miles and does physical training for more than 20 hours per day. Successful completion of Hell Week truly defines those candidates who have the commitment and dedication required of a SEAL. Hell Week is the ultimate test of a man's will and the class's teamwork.

A Timeline from the small beginning of UDT to U.S Navy SEALs. First an effective reaction force builded by true men of honor but then one of the most feared Special Operations Forces in the world. The modern day U.S. Navy SEALs can trace their roots to World War II. The United States Navy recognized the need for the covert reconnaissance of landing beaches and coastal defenses.
On 7 May 1943, Lieutenant Commander Draper L. Kauffman, "The Father of Naval Combat Demolition," was directed to set up a school and train people to eliminate obstacles on an enemy-held beach prior to an invasion. On 6 June 1943, LCDR Kauffman established Naval Combat Demolition Unit training at Fort Pierce. Most of Kauffman's volunteers came from the navy's engineering and construction battalions. Training commenced with a gruelling week designed to filter out under-performing candidates. On 6 June 1944, in the face of great adversity, the NCDUs at Omaha Beach managed to blow eight complete gaps and two partial gaps in the German defenses. The NCDUs suffered 31 killed and 60 wounded, a casualty rate of 52%. Meanwhile, the NCDUs at Utah Beach met less intense enemy fire. They cleared 700 yards of beach in two hours, another 900 yards by the afternoon.
Some of the earliest World War II predecessors of the SEALs were the Operational Swimmers of the Office of Strategic Services, or OSS. Many current SEAL missions were first assigned to them. OSS specialized in special operations, dropping operatives behind enemy lines to engage in organized guerrilla warfare as well as to gather information on such things as enemy resources and troop movements.
On 23 November 1943, the U.S. Marines landing on Tarawa Atoll emphasized the need for hydrographic reconnaissance and underwater demolition of obstacles prior to any amphibious landing. The islands in this area have unpredictable tide changes and shallow reefs preventing the naval transport vessels from progressing. The first wave crossed the reef in Amtracs, but the second in Higgins boats were not as successful. They got stuck on a reef due to low tide. The Marines were forced to unload and wade to shore. This proved to be a daunting task and many Marines were killed or drowned before reaching the beach. Without support from the second wave the Marines in Amtracs were slaughtered on the beach. This was a valuable lesson that the Navy did not want to be repeated. After the Tarawa landing, Rear Admiral Richmond K. Turner directed the formation of nine Underwater Demolition Teams. Thirty officers and 150 enlisted men were moved to the Waimānalo Amphibious Training Base to form the nucleus of a demolition training program. This group became Underwater Demolition Teams (UDT) ONE and TWO.
The Navy needed to determine its role within the special operations arena. In March 1961, Admiral Arleigh Burke, the Chief of Naval Operations, recommended the establishment of guerrilla and counter-guerrilla units. These units would be able to operate from sea, air or land. This was the beginning of the Navy SEALs. All SEALs came from the Navy's Underwater Demolition Teams, who had already gained extensive experience in commando warfare in Korea; however, the Underwater Demolition Teams were still necessary to the Navy's amphibious force.
The SEALs were initially deployed in and around Da Nang, training the South Vietnamese in combat diving, demolitions, and guerrilla/anti-guerrilla tactics. As the war continued, the SEALs found themselves positioned in the Rung Sat Special Zone where they were to disrupt the enemy supply and troop movements and in the Mekong Delta to fulfill riverine operations, fighting on the inland waterways.
Into the late 1960s, the SEALs were successful in a new style of warfare, effective in anti-guerrilla and guerrilla actions. SEALs brought a personal war to the enemy in a previously safe area. The Viet Cong referred to them as "the men with green faces," due to the camouflage face paint the SEALs wore during combat missions.
