Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa is a AAA Four Diamond Award–winning,[1] Victorian themed luxury hotel and spa located at the Walt Disney World Resort in Florida. The property opened on June 28, 1988 as the Grand Floridian Beach Resort. The name changed to Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa during the fall of 1997. The resort contains 867 rooms among six buildings at an average of 400 square feet (37 m2) per room. A standard room can sleep up to five people. The resort is owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
The Grand Floridian is categorized as a deluxe resort, one of four types of accommodations at the Florida site. It is also distinguished as Disney's flagship and most opulent resort.[2] The resort has received designation in the Florida Green Lodging Program.[3]

Although it resembles the Grand Floridian from the outside, the beautiful addition has been heavily inspired by Mary Poppins and Dumbo without losing any of the elegance. The Walt Disney World Resort, informally known as Walt Disney World or simply Disney World, is an entertainment complex in Bay Lake, Florida (mailing address is Lake Buena Vista, Florida), near Kissimmee and Orlando and is the flagship of Disney's worldwide corporate empire. The resort opened on October 1, 1971 and is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an attendance of over 52 million annually.[1]
Walt Disney World is owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a division of The Walt Disney Company. The property covers 27,443 acres (11,106 ha; 43 sq mi), housing 27 themed resort hotels, nine non–Disney hotels, four theme parks, two water parks, four golf courses, one nine-hole walking golf course for young golfers (no electric carts allowed), two themed miniature golf courses, one camping resort, a downtown-like shopping district, and other entertainment venues. Magic Kingdom was the first and original theme park to open in the complex followed by Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom, which opened later throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. "The Florida Project", as he called it, was originally to be built in hopes of differential in design and scheme from Disneyland with its own diverse set of rides. Walt Disney's original plans also called for the inclusion of an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow", a planned community that would serve as a test bed for new innovations for city living. After extensive lobbying, the Government of Florida created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special government district that essentially gave The Walt Disney Company the standard powers and autonomy of an incorporated city. However, Disney died on December 15, 1966, before construction began. Without the creative mind of Disney spearheading the construction of Walt Disney World, the company instead created the resort very similar to Disneyland, just on a much larger scale, along with abandoning Walt's concept of an experimental planned community.

Walter Elias "Walt" Disney (December 5, 1901 – December 15, 1966) was an American film producer, director, screenwriter, voice actor, animator, entrepreneur, entertainer, international icon, and philanthropist, well known for his influence in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. Along with his brother Roy O. Disney, he was co-founder of Walt Disney Productions, which later became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. The corporation is now known as The Walt Disney Company and had an annual revenue of approximately US$36 billion in the 2010 financial year.
Disney is particularly noted as a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. He and his staff created some of the world's most well-known fictional characters including Mickey Mouse, for whom Disney himself provided the original voice. During his lifetime he received four honorary Academy Awards and won 22 Academy Awards from a total of 59 nominations, including a record four in one year, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual in history. Disney also won seven Emmy Awards and gave his name to the Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the U.S., as well as the international resorts Tokyo Disney Resort, Disneyland Paris, and Hong Kong Disneyland.

The resort opened on October 1, 1971 and is the most visited vacation resort in the world, with an attendance of over 52 million annually.[1]
Walt Disney World is owned and operated by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts, a division of The Walt Disney Company. The property covers 27,443 acres (11,106 ha; 43 sq mi), housing 27 themed resort hotels, nine non–Disney hotels, four theme parks, two water parks, four golf courses, one nine-hole walking golf course for young golfers (no electric carts allowed), two themed miniature golf courses, one camping resort, a downtown-like shopping district, and other entertainment venues. Magic Kingdom was the first and original theme park to open in the complex followed by Epcot, Disney's Hollywood Studios, and Disney's Animal Kingdom, which opened later throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Designed to supplement Disneyland in Anaheim, California, which had opened in 1955, the complex was developed by Walt Disney in the 1960s. "The Florida Project", as he called it, was originally to be built in hopes of differential in design and scheme from Disneyland with its own diverse set of rides. Walt Disney's original plans also called for the inclusion of an "Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow", a planned community that would serve as a test bed for new innovations for city living. After extensive lobbying, the Government of Florida created the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special government district that essentially gave The Walt Disney Company the standard powers and autonomy of an incorporated city. However, Disney died on December 15, 1966, before construction began. Without the creative mind of Disney spearheading the construction of Walt Disney World, the company instead created the resort very similar to Disneyland, just on a much larger scale, along with abandoning Walt's concept of an experimental planned community.

Authorities are searching for a two-year-child who was dragged into the water by an alligator near Disney's Grand Floridian Resort & Spa in Orlando.
Multiple news outlets report that Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva says the boy was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon just before 9:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.
Deputies are continuing to comb the waters, with officials saying at a news conference after 1 a.m. ET that about 50 officials are involved in the search and rescue effort. Sonar equipment was being employed, with the search to continue through the night.
"We're not leaving until we've recovered the child," said Jerry Demings, sheriff from Orange County.
The child is from Nebraska, with the family of five visiting the Orlando area. The child's father, who suffered minor injuries, tried to rescue him when he was pulled into the water but was unsuccessful, according to the sheriff.
Demings said he didn't believe any video cameras provide coverage for the area in which the incident occurred.
Alligators common to the area are usually 1.2 metres to 2 metres long, he added.
Jacquee Wahaler, a spokesperson from Disney, said the company was "devastated by this tragic accident" and were providing support to the family as well as law enforcement.
When asked if Disney was aware of alligators on the property, Wahaler advised there were signs that said "no swimming."
Last week, the body of a 72-year-old man was recovered from an alligator near Lakeland, Fla., about 70 kilometres southwest of Orlando.
It was unclear if the man drowned or was killed by the reptile.
Demings says there have been no other recent reports of similar alligator attacks at the lake near Disney.

Multiple news outlets report that Orange County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Rose Silva says the boy was dragged into the Seven Seas Lagoon just before 9:30 p.m. ET Tuesday.
Deputies are continuing to comb the waters, with officials saying at a news conference after 1 a.m. ET that about 50 officials are involved in the search and rescue effort. Sonar equipment was being employed, with the search to continue through the night.
"We're not leaving until we've recovered the child," said Jerry Demings, sheriff from Orange County.
The child is from Nebraska, with the family of five visiting the Orlando area. The child's father, who suffered minor injuries, tried to rescue him when he was pulled into the water but was unsuccessful, according to the sheriff.
Demings said he didn't believe any video cameras provide coverage for the area in which the incident occurred.
Alligators common to the area are usually 1.2 metres to 2 metres long, he added.
Jacquee Wahaler, a spokesperson from Disney, said the company was "devastated by this tragic accident" and were providing support to the family as well as law enforcement.
When asked if Disney was aware of alligators on the property, Wahaler advised there were signs that said "no swimming."
Last week, the body of a 72-year-old man was recovered from an alligator near Lakeland, Fla., about 70 kilometres southwest of Orlando.
It was unclear if the man drowned or was killed by the reptile.
Demings says there have been no other recent reports of similar alligator attacks at the lake near Disney.

In Mousesteps Weekly #168, we talk about the following topics:
Our first stop is Disney's Grand Floridian Gingerbread House, where we went almost immediately after landing from our Disneyland trip for the grand opening ceremony. Chef Erich was on hand, along with Mickey Mouse! And several days per week in December, guests can enjoy a sample of roasted chestnuts.
We went to the first day of Epcot Holidays Around the World, a tradition for us. There are over 20 special entertainment offerings during the holidays, including Joyful!, Holiday Voyageurs in Canada, storytelling around World Showcase and more. Topiaries again grace the front of Epcot, as well as at the entrance to World Showcase.
As we usually do, we went to Disney's Beach Club Resort from there to see the Beach Club Gingerbread Carousel. The horses are always themed to the name, like Admiral for Disney's Yacht Club themed horse.
Our favorite place to meet Santa is at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Hotel! The Christmas tree lighting ceremony happens at 6pm on select days during December, and the casually dressed, vacationing couple from the North Pole greet guests with their helper Kandy Kane. After that, we check out the large chocolate Santa display in the Swan.
We walked back to Epcot, where we enjoyed the Candelight Processional with narrator Gary Sinise. He is always a favorite of ours!
Our last stop is Gaylord Palms, where we enjoyed ICE! and all that goes with it. For guests who wish to visit the 9 degree attraction, we recommend making it a half day and seeing "Cirque Dreams Unwrapped", checking out the atrium, the Elf on the Shelf scavenger hunt, and more. We decorated gingerbread cookies, met Santa and had breakfast with Mrs. Claus. Check out the Gaylord Palms website for the schedule, because not everything happens each day.
