This is an episode of the News Magazine TV show 20/20 where investigative reporter John Stossel looks into the work of one of A Touch of Wellness Director's mentors; Dr. John E Sarno.
Dr. Sarno's most notable (and controversial) achievement is the development, diagnosis and treatment of TMS, which is not accepted by mainstream medicine. According to Sarno, TMS is a psychosomatic illness causing chronic back, neck, and limb pain which is not relieved by standard medical treatments. He includes other ailments, such as gastrointestinal problems, dermatological disorders and repetitive-strain injuries as TMS related.
Sarno is the author of several books including: Healing Back Pain (1991), The Mindbody Prescription (1998) and The Divided Mind (2006.

This man is deceptively intelligent. He is 15 - 30 years ahead of his time. And what I find refreshing about he's ideas (and they work) is they are not wrapped up in new age thinking.
Doing yoga won't solve a person's back pain their unconscious mind has deliberately created by slightly reducing blood flow to specific nerves in order to physically distract their conscious attention to that area, because its aim is to protect them from what it sees as a memory or collection of thoughts it deems too painful for the person to go through.
Doing yoga in that person's case won't fix their problem, because they are not addressing the route cause of their pain. And if it does relieve them, it will only do so for a temporary period for time. Not that there's is anything wrong with yoga. It's very good for your body and everyday stresses. It's just that sometimes your back pain (other pains and ailments too) is caused by something more complicated (and I'm not suggesting a physical problem, even though there is real physical pain) that needs to be directly address.

Sarno
Sarno is a town and comune and former Latin Catholic bishopric of Campania, Italy, in the province of Salerno, 20 km northeast from the city of Salerno and 60 km east of Naples by the main railway.
Overview
It lies at the foot of the Apennine Mountains, near the sources of the Sarno River, called Sarnus in ancient times, a stream connected by canal with Pompei and the sea.
Paper, cotton, silk, linen and hemp are manufactured. The travertine which forms round the springs of the Sarno was used even at ancient Pompeii as building material.
History
The area of Sarno was inhabited since Neolithic times, and in pre-historical times housed Oscan and Samnites settlements. Later it was acquired by the Romans, who held it until the fall of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century AD. The first nucleus of the future Sarno grew in the 8th century around a castle founded by the Lombards of Benevento.
Before its incorporation with the domains of the crown of Naples, Sarno gave its name to a county held in succession by the Orsini, Coppola, Tuttavilla, and Colonna families.

Peter Sarno
Peter Sarno (born July 26, 1979) is a Canadian professional ice hockey centre currently playing for Alleghe Hockey in the Italian Serie A. He was selected in the sixth round of the 1997 NHL Entry Draft, 141st overall, by the Edmonton Oilers.
Playing career
After completing a relatively successful junior career with the Windsor Spitfires and the Sarnia Sting of the OHL, Sarno apprenticed in the Oilers farm system, playing for their AHL team, the Hamilton Bulldogs. After one season in Finland, Sarno returned to North America, where he played for the Oilers new AHL franchise, the Toronto Roadrunners. He also made his NHL debut, playing six games with the big club. Shortly thereafter, he was dealt to the Vancouver Canucks, who wanted more depth at their centre position. He played one and a half seasons for their AHL affiliate, the Manitoba Moose, before signing on with the Syracuse Crunch (affiliated with the Columbus Blue Jackets).
Sarno then moved to Europe, signing with HC Fribourg-Gottéron in the Nationalliga A in Switzerland in 2006, followed by three seasons in the Deutsche Eishockey Liga in Germany, two with the Hamburg Freezers and one with Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg. In 2010, Sarno moved to Italy and signed with the Serie A club HC Alleghe.

This is an episode of the News Magazine TV show 20/20 where investigative reporter John Stossel looks into the work of one of A Touch of Wellness Director's mentors; Dr. John E Sarno.
Dr. Sarno's most notable (and controversial) achievement is the development, diagnosis and treatment of TMS, which is not accepted by mainstream medicine. According to Sarno, TMS is a psychosomatic illness causing chronic back, neck, and limb pain which is not relieved by standard medical treatments. He includes other ailments, such as gastrointestinal problems, dermatological disorders and repetitive-strain injuries as TMS related.
Sarno is the author of several books including: Healing Back Pain (1991), The Mindbody Prescription (1998) and The Divided Mind (2006.
Sarno states that he has successfully treated over ten thousand patients at the Rusk Institute by educating them on his beliefs of a psychological and emotional basis to their pain and symptoms. Sarno's theory is, in part, that the pain or GI symptoms are an unconscious "distraction" to aid in the repression of deep unconscious emotional issues. Sarno believes that when patients think about what may be upsetting them in their unconscious they can defeat their minds strategy to repress these powerful emotions in this manner, the back pain symptoms are seen for what they are and the symptoms then serve no purpose, and they go away.

This man is deceptively intelligent. He is 15 - 30 years ahead of his time. And what I find refreshing about he's ideas (and they work) is they are not wrapped up in new age thinking.
Doing yoga won't solve a person's back pain their unconscious mind has deliberately created by slightly reducing blood flow to specific nerves in order to physically distract their conscious attention to that area, because its aim is to protect them from what it sees as a memory or collection of thoughts it deems too painful for the person to go through.
Doing yoga in that person's case won't fix their problem, because they are not addressing the route cause of their pain. And if it does relieve them, it will only do so for a temporary period for time. Not that there's is anything wrong with yoga. It's very good for your body and everyday stresses. It's just that sometimes your back pain (other pains and ailments too) is caused by something more complicated (and I'm not suggesting a physical problem, even though there is real physical pain) that needs to be directly address.
