The Indian Air Force (IAF) today, having completed the Platinum Jubilee of dedicated service to the nation, is a modern, technology-intensive force distinguished by its commitment to excellence and professionalism. Keeping pace with the demands of contemporary advancements, the IAF continues to modernise in a phased manner and today it stands as a credible air power counted amongst the fore-most professional services in the world.
The primacy of Air Power will be a decisive factor in shaping the outcome of future conflicts. In line with this dictum, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has developed into a major 'Component of National Power', which can be applied quickly and decisively. The IAF has reoriented itself to a multi-role capability of platforms and equipment, along with multi-skill capability of personnel. The rapid economic growth of the country dictates the need to protect our security interests extending from the Persian Gulf to the Straits of Malacca.
Over the years the IAF has grown from a tactical force to one with transoceanic reach. The strategic reach emerges from induction of Force Multipliers like Flight Refuelling Aircraft (FRA), Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and credible strategic lift capabilities. There is emphasis on acquiring best of technology through acquisitions or upgradation, be it aircraft, systems, precision missiles or net centricity. The main inductions and acquisitions by Indian Air Force are given in the following paras.
IAF has started upgrading its combat aircraft fleet since the last few years in order to enhance its operational capability and maintain its aircraft as modern weapon platforms, capable of meeting the present challenges posed by the security scenario in our region. Of the available fleet, MiG-21, MiG-27 and Jaguar aircraft have already been upgraded and Mirage-2000 and MiG-29 aircraft are planned for upgradation. The Indian Air Force is considering upgrade of its medium lift helicopters comprising Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-17-IVs, as also the AN - 32 transport aircraft, with the aim of improving their overall capability.
The IAF today is in the process of a most comprehensive modernisation plan. Over the next few years, the force would induct more Su-30 MKI aircraft, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). There are plans to augment the helicopter and transport fleets too. The IAF is also in the process of acquiring radars in various categories to meet the Air Defence requirements, accurate and advanced weapons, Network Centric Warfare systems, etc, to meet its assigned tasks.
The Indian Air Force has seven commands, of which five are operational and two functional, namely :

• HQ Eastern Air Command, Shillong
• HQ Western Air Command, New Delhi
• HQ Southern Air Command, Thiruvananthapuram

Indian Air Force (IAF) is to showcase its combat capabilities through frontline fighters in war exercise code named "IRON FIST 2016" in Pokhran on 18th March 2016. The motto of this year's Iron Fist is "Demonstrating The Capability To Punish".... "Weapons On Target...On Time". A total of 181 aircraft of IAF will participate in total 53 events in Pokhran located on the sensitive western border of India adjoining hostile Pakistan. Out of these 103 would be fighters, 53 helicopters, 19 transport aircrafts. Iron First exercise is being held after every 3 years last once was in 2013.
Indian Air Force has released the official promotional film of Iron Fist 2016 to media to give a peep into the high electric fire power display.
For the first time, demonstration capability of Akash Missile System and firng of Astra beyond visual range will be demonstrated in addition to the swing force capability of the Tejas in which LCA Tejas will drop a laser guided bomb and fire an air to air R73 missile along with rocket firing to engage the enemy.
The indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter will fire rocket to engage enemy armour. For joint operation capability demo in counter surface and support ops, IAF will demonstrate capability by both fixed and rotary aircrafts.
IAF has confirmed to demonstrate the air borne assault capability of C-17 Globemaster by dropping IAF's Garud para commandos all being trained as paratroopers. C-130 will carry out assault landing at Chandan Range in Pokhran.
The puropose of Iron Fist is to fight the army, navy and air force of the enemy during the war day and night, a capability demonstrated by only IAF in Indian subcontinent. IAF can'st demonstrate its Anti-ship capabilities as Pokhran range is a desert.
Sarang air display, low level aerobatics by Su-30mki, air warrior drill team and air symphony orchestra will also enthral the audience. Rohini Radar and Integrated Air Command and Control System will control the movement of 181 aircrafts operating from different bases.
Off late IAF has developed significant indigenisation and about 52 per cent components are developed indigenously.
The operational network centric capability is designed in 6 integrated packages. Some pointers are as follows:
Package-1: Transformation of Indian Air Force from Tigermoth to Su-30, from vintage aircrafts to Pilatus. Fighter aircraft flypast also includes performance by Suryakiran team.
Package-2: Network Centric flypast by AWACS. Demo of lethal ordnance in synchronised multimode precision and non precision bombs.
Package-3: Light combat aircraft demo of swing role capabilities. Combat support and rescue operations demo. Firing demo by IGLA.
Package-4: Combat support operations of IAF by all aircrafts. For the first time, rocket firing by light combat helicopter (LCH).

The Indian Air Force Chief Arup Raha was all praises for India's first Indigenously built fighter Jet Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas soon after taking first sortie. Air Chief Marshal Raha said, "It is a wonderful aircraft, ready to fly. I had first sortie in this aircraft Tejas. It is a good aircraft and I think its a good aircraft for the airforce to fly", when an HAL officer asked to comment about the his first sortie in the aircraft.
This is for the first time that an Air force chief has flew in the LCA Tejas fighter, the indigenously designed and produced at HAL Bangalore. The 17 May 2016 is a historic day not only for Indian Air Force but for LCA Tejas. It is a major boost for ADA, HAL and DRDO as Air Force Chief heavily praised the aircraft.
The Tejas has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL at Bangalore. The aircraft is an advanced fly by wire fighter aircraft with state of the art avionics.
The aircraft structure comprises of a large amount (more than 50%) of composites and features a quadruplex digital fly by wire control system.
The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvers in the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air to air and air to ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDs). An ace fighter pilot himself, Air Chief Marshal Raha appreciated the flying qualities of the aircraft. He congratulated the entire team of ADA and HAL for their hard work in getting the LCA program to this stage. Later he also presented a gift to the fighter pilot who has flown with him.
The series production of the Tejas aircraft has already commenced at HAL Bangalore and the IAF intends to form the first squadron of the LCA on 01 July 2016 The IAF has also decided to place an order for an additional 80 Tejas in the advanced LCA MK1A configuration. The LCA MK1A will have at least 45 improvements than in the aircraft what Air Chief had flown.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) must be keeping a close watch on the developments surrounding LCA Tejas as their JF-17 could not make much of a fighter and even opt out of dogfight in Bahrain International Air Show where LCA Tejas enthralled the world audience with its air manoeuvers.

The Indian Air Force Chief Arup Raha was all praises for India's first Indigenously built fighter Jet Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas soon after taking first sortie. Air Chief Marshal Raha said, "It is a wonderful aircraft, ready to fly. I had first sortie in this aircraft Tejas. It is a good aircraft and I think its a good aircraft for the airforce to fly", when an HAL officer asked to comment about the his first sortie in the aircraft. This is for the first time that an Air force chief has flew in the LCA Tejas fighter, the indigenously designed and produced at HAL Bangalore. The 17 May 2016 is a historic day not only for Indian Air Force but for LCA Tejas. It is a major boost for ADA, HAL and DRDO as Air Force Chief heavily praised the aircraft. The Tejas has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL at Bangalore. The aircraft is an advanced fly by wire fighter aircraft with state of the art avionics. The aircraft structure comprises of a large amount (more than 50%) of composites and features a quadruplex digital fly by wire control system. The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvers in the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air to air and air to ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDs). An ace fighter pilot himself, Air Chief Marshal Raha appreciated the flying qualities of the aircraft. He congratulated the entire team of ADA and HAL for their hard work in getting the LCA program to this stage. Later he also presented a gift to the fighter pilot who has flown with him. The series production of the Tejas aircraft has already commenced at HAL Bangalore and the IAF intends to form the first squadron of the LCA on 01 July 2016 The IAF has also decided to place an order for an additional 80 Tejas in the advanced LCA MK1A configuration. The LCA MK1A will have at least 45 improvements than in the aircraft what Air Chief had flown. The Indian Air Force (IAF) today, having completed the Platinum Jubilee of dedicated service to the nation, is a modern, technology-intensive force distinguished by its commitment to excellence and professionalism. The primacy of Air Power will be a decisive factor in shaping the outcome of future conflicts. In line with this dictum, the Indian Air Force (IAF) has developed into a major 'Component of National Power', which can be applied quickly and decisively. The IAF has reoriented itself to a multi-role capability of platforms and equipment, along with multi-skill capability of personnel. The rapid economic growth of the country dictates the need to protect our security interests extending from the Persian Gulf to the Straits of Malacca.
Over the years the IAF has grown from a tactical force to one with transoceanic reach. The strategic reach emerges from induction of Force Multipliers like Flight Refuelling Aircraft (FRA), Remotely Piloted Aircraft (RPA) and credible strategic lift capabilities. There is emphasis on acquiring best of technology through acquisitions or upgradation, be it aircraft, systems, precision missiles or net centricity. The main inductions and acquisitions by Indian Air Force are given in the following paras.
IAF has started upgrading its combat aircraft fleet since the last few years in order to enhance its operational capability and maintain its aircraft as modern weapon platforms, capable of meeting the present challenges posed by the security scenario in our region. Of the available fleet, MiG-21, MiG-27 and Jaguar aircraft have already been upgraded and Mirage-2000 and MiG-29 aircraft are planned for upgradation. The Indian Air Force is considering upgrade of its medium lift helicopters comprising Mi-8, Mi-17 and Mi-17-IVs, as also the AN - 32 transport aircraft, with the aim of improving their overall capability.
The IAF today is in the process of a most comprehensive modernisation plan. Over the next few years, the force would induct more Su-30 MKI aircraft, the Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) and the Medium Multi Role Combat Aircraft (MMRCA). There are plans to augment the helicopter and transport fleets too. The IAF is also in the process of acquiring radars in various categories to meet the Air Defence requirements, accurate and advanced weapons, Network Centric Warfare systems, etc, to meet its assigned tasks.
The Indian Air Force has seven commands, of which five are operational and two functional, namely :
• HQ Central Air Command, Allahabad
• HQ Eastern Air Command, Shillong
• HQ Western Air Command, New Delhi
• HQ Southern Air Command, Thiruvananthapuram
• HQ South-Western Air Command, Gandhi Nagar

For the first time, demonstration capability of Akash Missile System and firng of Astra beyond visual range will be demonstrated in addition to the swing force capability of the Tejas in which LCA Tejas will drop a laser guided bomb and fire an air to air R73 missile along with rocket firing to engage the enemy.
The indigenously developed Light Combat Helicopter will fire rocket to engage enemy armour. For joint operation capability demo in counter surface and support ops, IAF will demonstrate capability by both fixed and rotary aircrafts.
IAF has confirmed to demonstrate the air borne assault capability of C-17 Globemaster by dropping IAF's Garud para commandos all being trained as paratroopers. C-130 will carry out assault landing at Chandan Range in Pokhran.
The puropose of Iron Fist is to fight the army, navy and air force of the enemy during the war day and night, a capability demonstrated by only IAF in Indian subcontinent. IAF can'st demonstrate its Anti-ship capabilities as Pokhran range is a desert.
Sarang air display, low level aerobatics by Su-30mki, air warrior drill team and air symphony orchestra will also enthral the audience. Rohini Radar and Integrated Air Command and Control System will control the movement of 181 aircrafts operating from different bases.
Off late IAF has developed significant indigenisation and about 52 per cent components are developed indigenously.
The operational network centric capability is designed in 6 integrated packages. Some pointers are as follows:
Package-1: Transformation of Indian Air Force from Tigermoth to Su-30, from vintage aircrafts to Pilatus. Fighter aircraft flypast also includes performance by Suryakiran team.
Package-2: Network Centric flypast by AWACS. Demo of lethal ordnance in synchronised multimode precision and non precision bombs.
Package-3: Light combat aircraft demo of swing role capabilities. Combat support and rescue operations demo. Firing demo by IGLA.
Package-4: Combat support operations of IAF by all aircrafts. For the first time, rocket firing by light combat helicopter (LCH).

The Indian Air Force Chief Arup Raha was all praises for India's first Indigenously built fighter Jet Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas soon after taking first sortie. Air Chief Marshal Raha said, "It is a wonderful aircraft, ready to fly. I had first sortie in this aircraft Tejas. It is a good aircraft and I think its a good aircraft for the airforce to fly", when an HAL officer asked to comment about the his first sortie in the aircraft.
This is for the first time that an Air force chief has flew in the LCA Tejas fighter, the indigenously designed and produced at HAL Bangalore. The 17 May 2016 is a historic day not only for Indian Air Force but for LCA Tejas. It is a major boost for ADA, HAL and DRDO as Air Force Chief heavily praised the aircraft.
The Tejas has been designed by Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) and produced by HAL at Bangalore. The aircraft is an advanced fly by wire fighter aircraft with state of the art avionics.
The aircraft structure comprises of a large amount (more than 50%) of composites and features a quadruplex digital fly by wire control system.
The Air Chief Marshal carried out manoeuvers in the entire flying envelope of the aircraft. He carried out simulated air to air and air to ground attacks. He also assessed the advanced modes of the radar and Helmet Mounted Display Sight (HMDs). An ace fighter pilot himself, Air Chief Marshal Raha appreciated the flying qualities of the aircraft. He congratulated the entire team of ADA and HAL for their hard work in getting the LCA program to this stage. Later he also presented a gift to the fighter pilot who has flown with him.
The series production of the Tejas aircraft has already commenced at HAL Bangalore and the IAF intends to form the first squadron of the LCA on 01 July 2016 The IAF has also decided to place an order for an additional 80 Tejas in the advanced LCA MK1A configuration. The LCA MK1A will have at least 45 improvements than in the aircraft what Air Chief had flown.
Pakistan Air Force (PAF) must be keeping a close watch on the developments surrounding LCA Tejas as their JF-17 could not make much of a fighter and even opt out of dogfight in Bahrain International Air Show where LCA Tejas enthralled the world audience with its air manoeuvers.
