Nippon Maru, as well as SSEAYP has been known as the ship for friendship and cross-cultural understanding promotion. Furthermore, the ship itself has become a legend in the hearts of millions of participants since 1974.
During the 43rd SSEAYP this year, we, VPY decided to conduct a project, presenting the most common places on Nippon Maru, and introducing our members.

Nippon Maru
Nippon Maru (日本丸) is a Japanese museum ship. It is permanently docked in Yokohama harbor, in Nippon Maru Memorial Park.
History
Nippon Maru was built in Kobe in 1930. It was a training ship for the cadets of the Japanese merchant marine.
The ship became a museum in 1984.
Other ships
Nippon Maru was also the name of Kuki Yoshitaka's ship during the Toyotomi invasion of Korea.
Nippon Maru was also the name of a ship during the Russo-Japanese War.

SWY28 - My Journey - Part 1
Around 240 young leaders from around the world to participated in 28th Ship for World Youth Leaders Program, operated by the Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government. For six weeks, young people aged 18 – 30 lived together on board the Nippon Maru discussing global issues and sharing culture through activities. The Japanese Government invited 10 international delegations from Australia, Bahrain, Chile, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates to join 120 Japanese youth on board as we completed a round trip from Japan with official visits and social contribution activities in India and Sri Lanka. Around 240 young leaders from around the world to participated in 28th Ship for World Youth Leaders Program, operated by the Cabinet Office of the Japanese Government. For six weeks, young people aged 18 – 30 lived together on board the Nippon Maru discussing global issues and sharing culture through activities.
The Japanese Government invited 10 international delegations from Australia, Bahrain, Chile, India, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, Sri Lanka, Tanzania and the United Arab Emirates to join 120 Japanese youth on board as we completed a round trip from Japan with official visits and social contribution activities in India and Sri Lanka.

Nippon Maru, as well as SSEAYP has been known as the ship for friendship and cross-cultural understanding promotion. Furthermore, the ship itself has become a legend in the hearts of millions of participants since 1974.
During the 43rd SSEAYP this year, we, VPY decided to conduct a project, presenting the most common places on Nippon Maru, and introducing our members.

Sail training ship Nippon Maru, Yokohama, April 2012
Just in front of the Yokohama Landmark Tower (Japan's tallest skyscraper) is the Yokohama Port Museum with a new and very good exhibition. Part of the museum is the former training ship - a four masted barque - the Nippon Maru. It is permanently moored in an old dock. It is a very beautiful tall mast ship that was decommissioned in 1984 and has been open to the public since 1985. A few times during the summer volunteers make the ship come alive by setting all sails on the ship. It is definitely a spectacle and worth seeing. The museum next to the ship contains a huge collection of model ships and very interesting history about Yokohama and its port. I learned by studying from book and going out and trying it, talking with old ladies at the Mister Donuts and with girls! Started by making flashcards for katakana and hiragana and started to read menus then ... leveled up traveling and learning kanji from place names. On and on and on ...

It was supposedly the Japanese ship Koshu Maru that transported Earhart and her navigator Fred Noonan from Jaluit to Saipan, per the new theory of what happened to her after she crashed. But the same Japanese blogger who found the photo in the Diet archives “identifi[ed] the ship in the image as the Koshu, which the Japanese seized in World War I, rather than the Koshu Maru, which was launched in 1937.” Oops ...
