The only World War II-era leader to survive to the third millennium may be doomed to spend his remaining days away from his homeland.
King Michael I of Romania has lived abroad since 1947, when he was thrown out of the country by Bucharest's Soviet-backed leaders.
Even the country's post communist leaders remain wary of a former leader still adored by most of his subjects.
The former king made his first trip back to Romania as a fully fledged citizen in 1997 -- half a century since he was expelled.
Arriving with his wife, Anne of Bourbon-Parma, King Michael was forced to abdicate in 1947, then stripped of his citizenship by the Communists in 1948.
But the former Romanian ruler is loved for the role he played during World War II.
Romania was allied with Nazi Germany at the start of World War II, but deep-seated anti-Nazi resentment smouldered among the Romanian soldiers and people.
With the war going badly and amid heavy Romanian casualties, King Michael suddenly switched sides in 1944, a move that many historians credit with helping to bring about Hitler's downfall.
In 1945, Soviet leader Joseph Stalin thanked King Michael for his decision by awarding him the prestigious Victoria Order.
But just two years later the Soviets threw him out of power, of the country and of the history books.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"The British newspapers refer to me as one of the few links with the past, as the only head of state and commander in chief who had the privilege of guarding the destiny of my country during those terrible war years."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael, Former King of Romania
Michael made several attempts to return after the breakup of the Soviet Union, but he was often turned back by Romanian authorities, apparently fearful he would try to grab power.
But the former King and Queen were mobbed during an unofficial visit that was permitted in 1992.
His claims on former property have upset members of the current government, fearful he may still harbour designs on power.
Michael I maintains that the world still doesn't know the real story behind his long exile.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
"There has been no truth in the past 50 years, and especially now the young people are desperately working to find out the truth. During the last 45 years it was difficult to understand what Romania was before."
SUPER CAPTION: Michael, Former King of Romania
The former monarch still spends his days lobbying for Romania's entry into NATO and working on cultural projects.
He is expected to spend the Millennium holidays in Romania -- but only as a tourist.

STORYLINE:
Romania's former King Michael, aged 83, arrived in Moscow on Sunday to join other dignitaries attending events to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the allied victory in Europe, known as VE (Victory in Europe) Day, which ended World War II.
The former king is now the only surviving leader from the war years.
The commemoration events in Moscow come at the end of a trip by the former king around Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic where thousands of Romanian soldiers died in battles near the war's end.
Romania's role in the war was a chequered one.
Initially allied with the Axis powers, Romania participated in the German invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941.
A year earlier, the Soviet Union had invaded parts of Romania.
Overrun by Soviet troops by 1944, Michael said a solution had to be found and with the support of Romania's democratic and communist parties and the army, the 22-year-old king dismissed pro-Hitler leader Marshal Ion Antonescu in a coup.
This paved the way for Romania to sign an armistice with the Soviets and switch sides to join the Allies.
But since the war Romania's relations with Russia have been difficult, and didn't improve with the end of communism across Eastern Europe in 1989.
Many Romanians blamed Russia for imposing communism on the Balkan country after the war.
Romania signed a friendship treaty with Russia in 2003, years after Moscow had signed similar treaties with other post-Soviet countries.
Michael ruled Romania twice, most recently between 1940 and 1947.
He was forced to abdicate in 1947, shortly after the communists swept to power in Romania.
Years after the communist regime was toppled, Michael returned home from exile in Switzerland and Britain, only to be twice deported during President Ion Iliescu's first two terms in office.
He later reconciled with Iliescu and is now actively involved in public life.
He told the Associated Press, in a rare interview , that it was a great surprise to be asked but despite problems in the past, he would "see what will happen."

Transylvania boasts in various extremely beautiful landscapes. Its mountaintops are crowned by castle ruins, in its steep creeks rivers are twisting. In the giant wooden lands caves can be found, while among the alpine snow-capped mountains tarns are awaiting the tourists. Unique sights are the Békás Canyon and the Killer's Lake, which guards the petrified pinewoods. The warm springs feed such spa-resorts as Tusnádfürdő or Szováta. The medieval towns surrounded by towers and walls tell us tales of the past. National costumes, carved Székely-gates and the works of the Korond potters represent the ancient art of the folks living here. A legend or a story belongs to almost every city, every castle, no matter if it is the tall Déva castle, Hunyadvár or Brán, the Castle of Count Dracula.

Take a tour of Town of Sibiu in Sibiu, Romania -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Sibiu, situated in the heart of Romania, is a large city with a historic foundation.
It is divided into two main sections: the older Lower Town and the Upper Town. The old town dates back to the twelfth century and still has buildings from that time.
Sibiu was once a fortified city and some of its walls and towers still stand.
The Upper Town is newer and features the Grand Square, named for obvious reasons.
The city has a great collection of museums and medieval buildings, and is quite beautiful.

EPISODE #008
Every bicycle traveler needs to take a day or two for some time away from the bicycle. In this episode of my new bicycle touring vlog series, you'll see what a day on a bike tour, but away from the bicycle, looks like!
Follow along as I go hiking in the mountains of Transylvania, eat dinner in the restaurant where Vlad the Impaler was born, and explore the charming medieval town of Sighisoara, Romania.
This video was shot on April 1, 2015 during my bike tour from Poland to Romania via Ukraine.
