Jay Chou; (born 18 January 1979) is a Taiwanese musician, singer-songwriter, music and film producer, actor and director. In 1998 he was discovered in a talent contest where he displayed his piano and song-writing skills. Over the next two years, he was hired to compose for popular Mandarin singers. Although he was trained in classical music, Chou combines Chinese and Western music styles to produce songs that fuse R&B, rock and pop genres. He composes all his own songs, as well as songs for other singers.
In 2000, Chou released his first album, titled Jay, under the record company Alfa Music. Since then he has released one album per year except in 2009, selling several million copies each. His music has gained recognition throughout Asia, most notably in regions such as Taiwan, China, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, India, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam and in overseas Asian communities. He has sold more than 28 million albums worldwide up to 2010. He debuted his acting career in Initial D (2005), for which he won Best Newcomer Actor in both the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Golden Horse Awards, and was nominated for Best Supporting Actor by Hong Kong Film Awards for his role in Curse of the Golden Flower (2006). He produced the theme song for the film Ocean Heaven starring Jet Li. His career now extends into directing and running his own record company JVR Music.

Norah Jones (born Geethali Norah Jones Shankar; March 30, 1979) is an American singer-songwriter, pianist, and actress. She is the daughter of Indian sitar player Ravi Shankar. She is also the paternal half-sister of Anoushka Shankar.
In 2002, she launched her solo music career with the release of the commercially successful and critically acclaimed album Come Away With Me, a fusion of jazz, pop, and country music, which was certified a diamond album in 2002, selling over 20 million copies. The record earned Jones five Grammy Awards, including the Album of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best New Artist. Her subsequent studio albums, Feels Like Home, released in 2004, Not Too Late, released in 2007, the same year she made her film debut in My Blueberry Nights, and her 2009 release The Fall all gained Platinum status after selling over a million copies and were generally well received by critics. Jones' fifth studio album, Little Broken Hearts was released on April 27, 2012.
Jones has won nine Grammy Awards and was Billboard magazine's 60th-best-selling music artist of the 2000–2009 decade. Throughout her career, Jones has won numerous awards and has sold over 40 million albums worldwide.Billboard named her the top jazz artist of the 2000–2009 decade, establishing herself as one of the best-selling artists of her time.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — The Northern California doctor who was asked to help Prince before his death is an addiction and pain specialist who has championed the use of a semi-synthetic opiate to treat pain.
Dr. Howard Kornfeld, who operates an outpatient medical center in bucolic Marin County, received publicity in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2013 for his work with buprenorphine.
Advocates of the drug say the opiate can help addicted patients by offering pain relief with less possibility of overdose and addiction, unlike oxycodone or morphine.
Representatives of Prince reached out to Kornfeld the day before the pop star died, but the doctor sent his son because he couldn't immediately fly to Minnesota, said William Mauzy, a Minneapolis lawyer for Kornfeld.
The son, Andrew Kornfeld, was one of three people who found the singer unresponsive and called 911. He is listed as a consultant with his father's clinic and is a pre-med student, Mauzy said.
A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation has told The Associated Press that investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk about the investigation.
At least two experts on treating addiction have questioned whether Kornfeld responded appropriately when he was called to help Prince. He helped start a pain clinic in Oakland's Highland Hospital in 2011. A hospital spokeswoman declined to comment.

Messages left with Recovery Without Walls were not returned, and no one answered when a photographer knocked on the door. The clinic's nondescript two-story building is in downtown Mill Valley, a wealthy suburb of San Francisco.
The clinic's website promises personalized, confidential care for people addicted to sleeping pills, opiates and alcohol as well as people suffering from chronic pain. It includes a blog post that speculated whether buprenorphine could have saved actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, who died of an overdose.
Dr. Alex Zaphiris, a family physician and addiction medicine specialist, said most doctors cut off patients once they become hooked on prescription medication, forcing them to search for street drugs to feed their addiction.
"In a field where a lot of doctors run away from taking care of these patients, he's stood strong," she said of Kornfeld, whom she knows only by reputation as a fellow Mill Valley practitioner.
Kornfeld graduated from Northwestern University's medical school in 1975, according to licensing information with the California Department of Consumer Affairs. He is listed as certified by the American Board of Emergency Medicine.
Kornfeld is a voluntary assistant clinical professor in pain medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, which means he is unpaid, a university spokeswoman said.

MILL VALLEY, Calif. (AP) — The Northern California doctor who was asked to help Prince before his death is an addiction and pain specialist who has championed the use of a semi-synthetic opiate to treat pain.
Dr. Howard Kornfeld, who operates an outpatient medical center in bucolic Marin County, received publicity in the San Francisco Bay Area in 2013 for his work with buprenorphine.
Advocates of the drug say the opiate can help addicted patients by offering pain relief with less possibility of overdose and addiction, unlike oxycodone or morphine.
Representatives of Prince reached out to Kornfeld the day before the pop star died, but the doctor sent his son because he couldn't immediately fly to Minnesota, said William Mauzy, a Minneapolis lawyer for Kornfeld.
The son, Andrew Kornfeld, was one of three people who found the singer unresponsive and called 911. He is listed as a consultant with his father's clinic and is a pre-med student, Mauzy said.
A law enforcement official briefed on the investigation has told The Associated Press that investigators are looking into whether Prince died from an overdose. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he wasn't authorized to talk about the investigation.
At least two experts on treating addiction have questioned whether Kornfeld responded appropriately when he was called to help Prince. "I felt that way. I knew that I was really unhappy without her. I waited to propose because I thought I was too old for her. I've asked her to marry me before, but those times were for fun. This time, it was special and from my heart."

http://democracynow.org - "I may not be here if it wasn’t for Dan Berrigan," says journalist Jeremy Scahill as we remember the legendary antiwar priest, Father Daniel Berrigan, who spent his lifetime nonviolently protesting militarism, nuclear proliferation, racism and poverty. Berrigan died Saturday in the Bronx, just short of his 95th birthday. Scahill was a college student when he first met Berrigan, and went on to become close friends with him and his brother, Philip. The conversations they had inspired him to pursue fiercely independent journalism. "This man was just a moral giant," Scahill says, "the closest thing we have in our society to a prophet."

Nutter, joined by City officials, announced the launch of PHL Tax LOOP, the Longtime Owner Occupants Program, a new Real Estate Tax relief program for eligible Philadelphia homeowners. This week, the City of Philadelphia began mailing information packets, including a pre-filled application, to 80,000 properties based on preliminary eligibility requirements. December 3, 2013-- Mayor Michael A. Nutter, joined by City officials, announced the launch of PHL Tax LOOP, the Longtime Owner Occupants Program, a new Real Estate Tax relief program for eligible Philadelphia homeowners. This week, the City of Philadelphia began mailing information packets, including a pre-filled application, to 80,000 properties based on preliminary eligibility requirements. The LOOP application deadline is Wednesday, January 15, 2014.
"Our new property tax system is fair and accurate for all Philadelphians -- but fairer and more accurate values meant large Real Estate Tax increases for some homeowners," said Mayor Nutter. "In the current budget, working with City Council, we set aside $20 million to help longtime homeowners by offering Real Estate Tax relief. PHL Tax LOOP is an opportunity for property owners to receive savings on their Tax Year (TY) 14 Real Estate Taxes. I want to encourage every eligible Philadelphian to apply for this important discount."
Eligibility requirements for PHL Tax LOOP are as follows:
The TY14 market value of the property minus the $30,000 Homestead Exemption is triple the TY13 property value;
The property must be either a single-family dwelling or a multi-unit property with up to three residential units and one commercial unit;
The property must be the primary residence of the owner since at least July 1, 2003;
The property does not currently have, or ever had, a tax abatement;
The Real Estate Taxes for the property must be up-to-date; the owner must be current on an existing payment agreement or the owner must have applied to enter into a payment agreement;
And the homeowner meets income requirements based on household size.
In order to qualify for LOOP Real Estate Tax savings, applicants must meet all eligibility requirements and apply by January 15, 2014. Once approved, homeowners enrolled in LOOP will receive the real estate taxes discount for 10 years.
The LOOP discount will vary based on property values. Approved LOOP applicants will have their TY14 Real Estate taxes calculated using the TY14 tax rate of 1.34% multiplied by three times the TY13 property value.
All applicants will be notified by a decision letter in March 2014. Due to the LOOP timeline, a new Real Estate Tax payment procedure has been outlined for LOOP applicants. Homeowners applying for LOOP should pay the discounted amount indicated on the brochure received in the information packet by the real estate tax due date, March 31, 2014 or February 28, 2014 to receive an additional 1% discount. If approved, no further action is needed. If an application is denied, the property owner must pay the balance due, the difference between the reduced amount due with the LOOP discount and the amount due without LOOP, by April 30, 2014 to avoid interest or penalties.
If a homeowner pays real estate taxes through their mortgage company, the City will notify the mortgage company of the new amount due if the LOOP application is approved.
Individuals should apply for LOOP whether or not they have received the Homestead Exemption.
TY14 Real Estate Tax bills for all Philadelphia properties will be mailed on December 9, 2013. These bills will not indicate if a property is LOOP eligible.
