Ian Brady (born Ian Duncan Stewart on January 2, 1938 in the Gorbals, Glasgow, Scotland) is a notorious Scottish serial killer.
Brady is known primarily for his role in a series of murders that took place in Greater Manchester between 1963 and 1965. These were dubbed the Moors murders, as several victims were buried along the Saddleworth Moor near Oldham in Lancashire.
Ian Brady was born at the Rottenrow Maternity Hospital in Glasgow to Margaret ("Peggy") Stewart and grew up in the tough slum neighbourhood of the Gorbals. Peggy Stewart, a tea-room waitress, found it difficult bringing up a child on her own and hoped to spare her son the social stigma of his illegitimacy. So she gave up young Ian to the nearby Sloane family who adopted him into their own family and raised him as one of their own. Ian's father has never been identified; Peggy Stewart claimed that he was a journalist who died a few months before their son was born.
Myra Hindley was an English serial killer. In partnership with Ian Brady, she committed the rapes and murders of five small children. Hindley's 17-year-old brother-in-law tipped her off the police about her crimes. Hindley plead not guilty to all of the murders. She was found guilty of three murders and was jailed for life. She was never released, and died in prison in 2002.

After the drowning death of a close male friend when she was 15, Hindley left school and converted to Roman Catholicism. Moors murders
The Moors murders were carried out by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley between July 1963 and October 1965, in and around what is now Greater Manchester, England. The victims were five children aged between 10 and 17—Pauline Reade, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans—at least four of whom were sexually assaulted. The murders are so named because two of the victims were discovered in graves dug on Saddleworth Moor; a third grave was discovered on the moor in 1987, more than 20 years after Brady and Hindley's trial in 1966. The body of a fourth victim, Keith Bennett, is also suspected to be buried there, but despite repeated searches it remains undiscovered.
The police were initially aware of only three killings, those of Edward Evans, Lesley Ann Downey and John Kilbride. The investigation was reopened in 1985, after Brady was reported in the press as having confessed to the murders of Pauline Reade and Keith Bennett. Brady and Hindley were taken separately to Saddleworth Moor to assist the police in their search for the graves, both by then having confessed to the additional murders.

Moors
The Moors were Muslim inhabitants of the Maghreb, the Iberian Peninsula, Sicily, and Malta during the Middle Ages. The Moors were initially of Berber and Arab descent, though the term was later applied to Africans, Iberian Christian converts to Islam, and people of mixed ancestry.
In 711 the Moors invaded the Iberian Peninsula from North Africa and called the territory Al-Andalus, which at its peak included most of modern-day Spain, Portugal, and Septimania. The Moors occupied Mazara on Sicily in 827, developing it as a port, and they eventually consolidated the rest of the island and some of southern Italy. Differences in religion and culture led to a centuries-long conflict with the Christian kingdoms of Europe, which tried to reclaim control of Muslim areas; this conflict was referred to as the Reconquista. In 1224 the Muslims were expelled from Sicily to the settlement of Lucera, which was destroyed by European Christians in 1300. The fall of Granada in 1492 marked the end of Muslim rule in Iberia, although a Muslim minority persisted until their expulsion in 1609.

Myra
Myra (Ancient Greek: Μύρα [plural]) was an ancient Greek town in Lycia where the small town of Kale (Demre) is situated today, in present day Antalya Province of Turkey. It was located on the river Myros (Demre Çay), in the fertile alluvial plain between Alaca Dağ, the Massikytos range and the Aegean Sea.
Historical evidence
Although some scholars equate Myra with the town Mira in Arzawa, there is no proof for the connection. There is no substantiated written reference for Myra before it was listed as a member of the Lycian alliance (168 BC – AD 43); according to Strabo (14:665) it was one of the largest towns of the alliance.
The Greek citizens worshipped Artemis Eleutheria, who was the protective goddess of the town. Zeus, Athena and Tyche were venerated as well.
The ruins of the Lycian and Roman town are mostly covered by alluvial silts. The Acropolis on the Demre-plateau, the Roman theatre and the Roman baths (eski hamam) have been partly excavated. The semi-circular theater was destroyed in an earthquake in 141, but rebuilt afterwards.

Testing her blind allegiance, Brady hatched plans of rape and murder. In July 1963, they claimed their first victim, Pauline Reade. Four months later, 12-year-old John Kilbride disappeared, never to be seen again. In June 1964, 12-year-old Keith Bennett followed. On the afternoon of Boxing Day, 1964, 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey disappeared from a local fairground. Finally, in October 1965, police were alerted to the duo by Hindley's 17-year-old brother-in-law, David Smith. Smith had witnessed Brady killing 17-year-old Edward Evans with an axe, concealing his horror for fear of meeting a similar fate. Smith then went to the police with his story, including Brady having mentioned that more bodies were buried on Saddleworth Moor. Hindley and Ian Brady were brought to trial on April 27, 1966, where they pleaded not guilty to the murders of Edward Evans, Lesley Ann Downey, and John Kilbride. Brady was found guilty of the murders of Lesley Ann Downey, John Kilbride, and Edward Evans, while Hindley was found guilty of the murders of Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans, and also for harboring Brady, in the knowledge that he had killed John Kilbride. They were both jailed for life. In 1970, Hindley severed all contact with Brady and, still professing her innocence, began a lifelong campaign to regain her freedom. In 1987, Hindley again became the center of media attention, with the public release of her full confession, in which she admitted her involvement in all five murders. Her subsequent applications for parole were denied. She died of respiratory failure on November 16, 2002. -

When Hindley's socialite wife Frances dies in childbirth, he is completely embittered, becomes a drunk unable to care for his son Hareton and has to sell Wuthering Hights- to Heathcliffe. After a misunderstanding Cathy marries Linton, Heath retorts by a loveless match with his sister. Plot: The story of unfortunate lovers Heathcliff and Cathy who, despite a deep affection for one another, are forced by circumstance and prejudice to live their apart. Previously unpublished letters show Moors murderer Ian Brady claimed to have killed four more people.
The letters, which emerged as his bid to be transferred from a maximum security hospital to prison failed, show that he confessed to killing two men in his native Glasgow and a man and woman in Manchester.
Brady described the other murders as "happenings" and says his male victim in Manchester was killed "on the waste ground behind the station" and the other was a "woman in the canal".
One of his Glasgow victims was killed "above" Loch Long, at the mouth of the Clyde, Brady wrote.
The letters, which have been published in The Daily Telegraph, were written to journalist Brendan Pittaway in the 1980s.
On Friday Brady lost his £250,000 legal bid to be transferred to a jail after a week-long public hearing, meaning the child killer will remain at Ashworth Hospital on Merseyside on the grounds that he is mentally insane.
The tribunal was the first time Brady has been seen in public since the 1980s, when he was taken back to Saddleworth Moor in the search for the bodies of two of his victims.
Brady and his partner, Myra Hindley, were convicted of luring children and teenagers to their deaths, with their victims sexually tortured before being buried on Saddleworth Moor. Hindley died in hospital in 2002 at the age of 60, still a prisoner.
The brother of victim Keith Bennett, whose body was never found, has said Brady was "nothing more than a serial killer of children, a paedophile, a coward and a self-pitying liar".
Alan Bennett wrote: "I have to say now that I am glad Brady did have his say, he tied his own defence team in knots, never gave a definitive answer under cross-examination and went on to show anybody interested that he is nothing more than a self-pitying liar."
In Brady's letters he says Bennett's body was buried in Yorkshire, rather than the Moors as originally thought.
Responding to Brady's claims about the other murders, Martin Bottomley, head of Greater Manchester Police's Cold Case Review Unit, said: "In the 1980s, Brady 'confessed' to a number of other unrelated murders. All these claims were thoroughly investigated at that time and found to be completely unsubstantiated.
"GMP has been investigating Brady's horrendous crimes and their aftermath for over 40 years now.
"A week hardly goes by when we do not receive some information which purports to lead us to Keith's burial site.
"All of these claims are investigated and it remains our aim to find Keith for the sake of his surviving family members.
"Only one person knows where Keith is buried and he refuses to disclose that information, preferring to taunt Keith's loved ones."
Brendan Pittaway told Sky News Brady's state of mind in the letters was obvious.
"When he was more controlled and talking about subjects he wasn't so angry about, his writing was rational, the sentences were shorter," he said.
"When he was talking about Hindley and the authorities who he detested ... his language would be peppered with references to cranks and conspiracies."
The decision on Brady's appeal was given by the three-man panel headed by Judge Robert Atherton, who heard the tribunal at Ashworth Hospital.
Reasons for the decision will be given at a later date because of the length of the material the panel needs to consider.
After the ruling, Dr David Fearnley, medical director at Ashworth, said the judgement was "consistent with the expert opinions of our clinicians".
Brady - who claims to have been on a hunger strike since 1999 - told the hearing he was merely "a petty criminal" and described his crimes as "recreational killings".
His legal application challenged the order made under the Mental Health Act when he was transferred from prison to Ashworth in 1985, when he was diagnosed as being a paranoid schizophrenic.
Brady's legal team argued that, despite his severe personality disorder, he is not mentally ill.
He suggested that, if he is allowed to go back to a jail, he would be "free to end his own life" by starving himself to death.
Brady has the right to challenge the decision, which would require a further hearing at an Upper Tribunal.
