Sheriff's officials say a 23-year-old man was fatally shot by a deputy in Camarillo after he came at the deputy while armed with a knife repeatedly saying, "kill me."
It happened shortly before noon Wednesday on Carmen Drive north of Daily Drive.
Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that the incident actually began when the man took a wireless phone from a nearby business and he called 911 to say a crime was about to be committed and he wanted to die.
Dean said that a deputy responded and the man came up to the patrol car and tried to open the door.
The deputy told the man to back up and when the deputy exited the patrol car the man produced a large knife and came at the deputy repeatedly saying "kill me."
Dean said that the deputy backed up several times telling the man to stop and get down on the ground and at one point wanted to use his Taser but the man continued to advance on the deputy and the deputy then used his gun and shot the man several times.
The man was taken to the trauma center at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died.
The deputy suffered some scrapes and bruises in the altercation.
The area around Carmen and Daily was shut down while the Major Crimes and Internal Affairs units conducted their investigation.
It also impacted the off ramps from the 101 Freeway, but those ramps were opened later and the only closure was Carmen between Daily and Paseo Camarillo.

Camarillo is now known for golfing at these beautiful clubs, and of course the Camarillo Outlets. People come from all around to shop for deals here. BACKGROUND: Camarillo Skate Park, affectionately referred to as "Cam Park", was built in 1998 by the City of Camarillo and was completely free of charge, helmet and pad laws, bike/skate/scooter time distinctions, and full-time park monitors until June of 2009 when it was donated to the Pleasant Valley Recreation and Park District, a separate entity from the city. Managers of the district quickly closed and reopened the park with all of the aforementioned restrictions—against a large public outcry at their board meetings. Going to the skatepark and trying to utilize it like thousands of people did for over a decade prior often resulted in immediate police action. Skateboarders were turned away, boards were taken, and "bans" and citations were issued. Even worse, the district was not at all interested in working with us to change any of the rules back.
So on National Go Skateboarding Day 2012 we decided to try and take back the park for a day; to have a single day that felt like "the good ol' days"—no fees to skate, no all-age helmet rules, and no hours to abide by. The event was organized, t-shirts were made, and a BBQ was to be hosted by the local skateshop, ironically named Revolution. The plan was simple: rush into the park and enjoy a day of skating while raising awareness of our situation.
However, we were not met with open arms by anyone in the city that day, as this video shows.

It happened shortly before noon Wednesday on Carmen Drive north of Daily Drive.
Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that the incident actually began when the man took a wireless phone from a nearby business and he called 911 to say a crime was about to be committed and he wanted to die.
Dean said that a deputy responded and the man came up to the patrol car and tried to open the door.
The deputy told the man to back up and when the deputy exited the patrol car the man produced a large knife and came at the deputy repeatedly saying "kill me."
Dean said that the deputy backed up several times telling the man to stop and get down on the ground and at one point wanted to use his Taser but the man continued to advance on the deputy and the deputy then used his gun and shot the man several times.
The man was taken to the trauma center at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died.
The deputy suffered some scrapes and bruises in the altercation.
The area around Carmen and Daily was shut down while the Major Crimes and Internal Affairs units conducted their investigation.
It also impacted the off ramps from the 101 Freeway, but those ramps were opened later and the only closure was Carmen between Daily and Paseo Camarillo.

Camarillo (
/ˌkæməˈriːoʊ/) is a city in Ventura County, California, United States. The population was 65,201 at the 2010 census, up from 57,084 at the 2000 census. The Ventura Freeway (U.S. Route 101) is the city's primary thoroughfare.
Camarillo is named for Adolfo and Juan Camarillo, two of the few Californios (pre-1848 California natives of Hispanic ancestry) to preserve the city's heritage after the arrival of Anglo settlers. As with most cities in Ventura County, it is noted for its resistance to new development.[citation needed] Some of the most desirable land in the city limits, located on the north and south sides of the Ventura Freeway, is permanently zoned for agricultural use. Frank Vincent Zappa (December 21, 1940 – December 4, 1993) was an American composer, singer-songwriter, electric guitarist, recording engineer, record producer and film director. In a career spanning more than 30 years, Zappa wrote rock, jazz, orchestral and musique concrète works. He also directed feature-length films and music videos, and designed album covers. Zappa produced almost all of the more than 60 albums he released with the band The Mothers of Invention and as a solo artist. While in his teens, he acquired a taste for percussion-based avant-garde composers such as Edgard Varèse and 1950s rhythm and blues music. He began writing classical music in high school, while at the same time playing drums in rhythm and blues bands; he later switched to electric guitar.
He was a self-taught composer and performer, and his diverse musical influences led him to create music that was often impossible to categorize. His 1966 debut album with The Mothers of Invention, Freak Out!, combined songs in conventional rock and roll format with collective improvisations and studio-generated sound collages. It happened shortly before noon Wednesday on Carmen Drive north of Daily Drive.
Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that the incident actually began when the man took a wireless phone from a nearby business and he called 911 to say a crime was about to be committed and he wanted to die.
Dean said that a deputy responded and the man came up to the patrol car and tried to open the door.
The deputy told the man to back up and when the deputy exited the patrol car the man produced a large knife and came at the deputy repeatedly saying "kill me."
Dean said that the deputy backed up several times telling the man to stop and get down on the ground and at one point wanted to use his Taser but the man continued to advance on the deputy and the deputy then used his gun and shot the man several times.
The man was taken to the trauma center at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died.
The deputy suffered some scrapes and bruises in the altercation.
The area around Carmen and Daily was shut down while the Major Crimes and Internal Affairs units conducted their investigation.
It also impacted the off ramps from the 101 Freeway, but those ramps were opened later and the only closure was Carmen between Daily and Paseo Camarillo.

Managers of the district quickly closed and reopened the park with all of the aforementioned restrictions—against a large public outcry at their board meetings. Going to the skatepark and trying to utilize it like thousands of people did for over a decade prior often resulted in immediate police action. Skateboarders were turned away, boards were taken, and "bans" and citations were issued. Even worse, the district was not at all interested in working with us to change any of the rules back.
So on National Go Skateboarding Day 2012 we decided to try and take back the park for a day; to have a single day that felt like "the good ol' days"—no fees to skate, no all-age helmet rules, and no hours to abide by. The event was organized, t-shirts were made, and a BBQ was to be hosted by the local skateshop, ironically named Revolution. The plan was simple: rush into the park and enjoy a day of skating while raising awareness of our situation.
However, we were not met with open arms by anyone in the city that day, as this video shows.

THE VENTURA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT RELEASED THIS VIDEO OF THE DEPUTY INVOLVED SHOOTING IN CAMARILLO WEDNESDAY. THE VIDEO WAS TAKEN BY ONE OF THE WITNESSES TO THE INCIDENT AND GIVEN TO THE SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WHO RELEASED IT TO THE NEWS MEDIA

Updated---Sheriff's officials say a 23-year-old man was fatally shot by a deputy in Camarillo after he came at the deputy while armed with a knife repeatedly saying, "kill me."
It happened shortly before noon Wednesday on Carmen Drive north of Daily Drive.
Sheriff Geoff Dean told reporters that the incident actually began when the man took a wireless phone from a nearby business and he called 911 to say a crime was about to be committed and he wanted to die.
Dean said that a deputy responded and the man came up to the patrol car and tried to open the door.
The deputy told the man to back up and when the deputy exited the patrol car the man produced a large knife and came at the deputy repeatedly saying "kill me."
Dean said that the deputy backed up several times telling the man to stop and get down on the ground and at one point wanted to use his Taser but the man continued to advance on the deputy and the deputy then used his gun and shot the man several times.
The man was taken to the trauma center at Los Robles Medical Center in Thousand Oaks where he died.
The deputy suffered some scrapes and bruises in the altercation.
The area around Carmen and Daily was shut down while the Major Crimes and Internal Affairs units conducted their investigation.
It also impacted the off ramps from the 101 Freeway, but those ramps were opened later and the only closure was Carmen between Daily and Paseo Camarillo.
ALL ROAD CLOSURES HAVE BEEN LIFTED.
