Rootsy Americana Music w/ WMUK’s Grassroots Hosts Mark Sahlgren and Darcy Wilkin. Mark Sahlgren has been playing locally and elsewhere around Michigan for years, and recently received a Community Medal of Arts Award from the Arts Council of Greater Kalamazoo. Darcy is an accomplished singer, guitarist, elementary school teacher, Kalamazoo Valley Community College instructor, and a founding member of her band, The Corn Fed Girls, a favorite on the Michigan folk music festival circuit. The father-and-daughter team currently host WMUK’s weekly acoustic music showcase, Grassroots. This performance was captured on Wednesday, October 21, 2015, at Kalamazoo Public Library. Stringband and bluegrass music has been a near obsession for Mark Sahlgren since the 1950s. Beginning with the Weavers and the New Lost City Ramblers, then delving further into the ‘roots’ music of groups like the Skillet Lickers and Flatt and Scruggs, the guitar became the driving force in his musical life. (Mark has a rather impressive collection of antique instruments, including several vintage Gibson guitars.) Having led his own band, Sweetcorn, for many years, developing recording projects, producing music festivals, teaching guitar workshops throughout southern Michigan, and hosting the radio program Grassroots on public radio for over 30 years – Mark remains active in Americana music.
