American rapper
Lil Wayne has released eleven studio albums, one remix
album, two extended plays, nineteen mixtapes, one-hundred ninety-two
singles, thirteen promotional singles and one-hundred thirty-six music videos.
Born Dwayne Michael Carter Jr., Lil Wayne began his career when he was a teenager. In
1993, Lil Wayne teamed with fellow rapper
B.G. to form the duo
The B.G.'z; they released an album
True Story in
1995.[1] Lil Wayne joined the group
Hot Boys in
1997; Hot Boys would release three albums:
Get It How U Live! in 1997,
Guerrilla Warfare in
1999, and
Let 'Em Burn in
2003. In
1998, Lil Wayne appeared on the hit single "
Back That Thang Up" by fellow Hot Boys rapper
Juvenile.[2]
Lil Wayne made his solo debut in 1999 with
Tha Block Is Hot, which went platinum and yielded the singles "Tha Block Is Hot", "
Respect Us", and "
Get Off the
Corner". His later albums,
Lights Out (
2000) and
500 Degreez (
2002) attracted minor attention, and Lil Wayne appeared on the
Big Tymers' hit single "#1 Stunna" in 2000.
Beginning in 2003, Lil Wayne began recording a series of mixtapes titled
Da Drought that led up to his
2004 album Tha Carter. "
Go D.J.", the lead single from Tha Carter, reached #14 on the
Billboard Hot 100 in the
United States, and
Lil Wayne also made a guest performance on another top ten single, "
Soldier" by
Destiny's Child. In
2005,
Tha Carter II came out with the singles "
Fireman", "
Hustler Muzik", and "
Shooter".[2]
With rapper
Birdman, Lil Wayne released collaborative album
Like Father, Like Son in
2006; that album included the single "
Stuntin' Like My Daddy". That single reached #21 on the
Hot 100 and #5 on the
Hot Rap Tracks chart. In 2006 and
2007, Lil Wayne focused on recording mixtapes, including the
Dedication series hosted by
DJ Drama and
Da Drought 3, and guest performances for other artists. Many popular hip hop and
R&B; singles of those years featured Lil Wayne, including "
Gimme That" by
Chris Brown, "
Make It Rain" by
Fat Joe, "You" by
Lloyd, "
We Takin' Over" by
DJ Khaled, "
Sweetest Girl (
Dollar Bill)" by
Wyclef Jean, and "
Duffle Bag Boy" by
Playaz Circle.
In 2008, Lil Wayne released his best-selling album yet,
Tha Carter III. The album featured the number-one single "
Lollipop", a collaboration with
Static Major, and other top 20 singles "
A Milli", "
Got Money" (featuring
T-Pain), and "
Mrs. Officer" (featuring
Bobby Valentino).
Certified triple platinum by the
Recording Industry Association of America,[3] Tha Carter III won the
Best Rap Album award at the
2009 Grammy Awards, "Lollipop" won the
Best Rap Song award, and "A Milli" won the
Best Rap Solo Performance Award.[4] Lil Wayne founded record label
Young Money Entertainment and released a collaborative album featuring rappers signed to the label,
We Are Young Money, in 2009, followed by his debut rock music album
Rebirth in
2010. While serving an 8-month prison sentence in
New York he released another album entitled
I Am Not a
Human Being, originally intended only to be an EP but upgraded to a full album, in
September 2010, featuring
Young Money artists such as
Drake,
Nicki Minaj and
Lil Twist. His latest album,
Tha Carter IV was released on August 29,
2011. It includes the singles "
6 Foot 7 Foot", featuring
Cory Gunz, "
John" featuring
Rick Ross, "
How to Love" and "
She Will" featuring Drake. His album sales in the United States stand at over 15 million copies as of July
2013,[5] and his digital track sales stand at over 37 million digital copies.
