Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our grand entrance into famous Los Angeles Union Station.
With vantage points inside the train and along the tracks, I captured the entire experience on the Southwest Chief, carefully edited from hours of footage over more than a year of filming. I hope you enjoy this video!

The National Railroad Passenger Corporation, doing business as Amtrak (reporting mark AMTK), is a government-owned corporation that was organized on May 1, 1971, to provide intercity passenger train service in the United States. "Amtrak" is a portmanteau of the words "America" and "track" (sic). It is headquartered at Union Station in Washington, D.C.
All of Amtrak's preferred stock is owned by the U.S. federal government. The members of its board of directors are appointed by the President of the United States and are subject to confirmation by the United States Senate. Common stock was issued in 1971 to railroads that contributed capital and equipment; these shares convey almost no benefits but their current holders declined a 2002 buy-out offer by Amtrak.
Amtrak employs more than 20,000 people. It operates passenger service on 21,200 miles (34,000 km) of track primarily owned by freight railroads. Amtrak operates more than 300 trains each day—at speeds up to 150 mph connecting more than 500 destinations in 46 states and three Canadian provinces. In fiscal year 2011, Amtrak served 30.2 million passengers and had $1.9 billion in ticket revenue.

Amtrak Derails Outside Philadelphia, Injuries Reported
Authorities said some injuries were reported, after an Amtrak train struck a piece of construction equipment just south of Philadelphia. Service on the north-east corridor between New York and Philadelphia was suspended. Amtrak said train 89 was traveling from New York to Savannah, Georgia, when it struck a backhoe that was on the track in Chester. Chester is about 15 miles outside Philadelphia. The force of impact derailed the lead engine of the train. According to estimates, 341 passengers and seven crew members were on board. According to Amtrak, initial reports were that some passengers were being treated for injuries. Local emergency responders were on the scene. After being lazy for a few weeks indoors since it was cold out, the weather was to jump up and be warm on 3/10/15, so I set out to railfan the Amtrak Chicago yard and other places that day. Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our grand entrance into famous Los Angeles Union Station.
With vantage points inside the train and along the tracks, I captured the entire experience on the Southwest Chief, carefully edited from hours of footage over more than a year of filming. I hope you enjoy this video!

Come along with us as we climb aboard Amtrak’s Southwest Chief for an amazing, 3-day adventure across America. Beginning in Chicago, Illinois, our train will take us over 2,200 miles to Los Angeles, California, on the former route of Santa Fe’s Super Chief streamliner. From Illinois farm country, transitioning to Kansas prairie, we thunder across Colorado, and head over the Rocky Mountains on the steep grades of Raton Pass. Then it’s down through New Mexico on scenic tracks that today are only used by Amtrak. Seemingly frozen in time are relics from Santa Fe’s heyday, including semaphore signals and long stretches of jointed rail, as we pass the historic landmarks of Wagon Mound, Glorieta Pass, and Apache Canyon. Soon we make it to California, running over Cajon Pass before making our grand entrance into famous Los Angeles Union Station.
With vantage points inside the train and along the tracks, I captured the entire experience on the Southwest Chief, carefully edited from hours of footage over more than a year of filming. I hope you enjoy this video!

Service on the north-east corridor between New York and Philadelphia was suspended.
Amtrak said train 89 was traveling from New York to Savannah, Georgia, when it struck a backhoe that was on the track in Chester. Chester is about 15 miles outside Philadelphia.
The force of impact derailed the lead engine of the train. According to estimates, 341 passengers and seven crew members were on board.
According to Amtrak, initial reports were that some passengers were being treated for injuries. Local emergency responders were on the scene. The crash was being investigated.

After being lazy for a few weeks indoors since it was cold out, the weather was to jump up and be warm on 3/10/15, so I set out to railfan the Amtrak Chicago ya...
After being lazy for a few weeks indoors since it was cold out, the weather was to jump up and be warm on 3/10/15, so I set out to railfan the Amtrak Chicago yard and other places that day.
By the Amtrak Chicago yard, 18th St. bridge, Lumber St. grade crossing, and the area around it offers plenty of room and angles of the various Amtrak action, which can be quite busy at various times during the day.
Luck was certainly with me that foggy morning, as 3 heritage units and various other notable Amtrak locomotives were all in the area, which I had no idea beforehand that they were there.
Starting off, Amtrak 517 B32-8WH wyes two superliners, and after pulling past Lumber St. grade crossing, Amtrak 66 leads a morning Lincoln Service train in right next to it, which I didn't notice right away, but still got video of it. As the Lincoln Service is passing, 517 pushes the two superliners back into the Chicago yard.
Next, I record all the various Amtrak locomotives sitting in the yard and outside the shops. Notable locomotive include the last original phase 3 painted F40 NPCU (non-powered control unit), 90368 nose to nose but not coupled with Amtrak 156, the phase 1 heritage unit. Amtrak 518 and 504, B32-8WHs in phase 5 and 4 paint. (504 has been repainted, and now wears phase 5 paint) Amtrak 90219 NCPU, Amtrak 145 one of the phase 3 heritage units, and Amtrak 519, another phase 4 B32-8WH.
The Cardinal passes by with P42 #126 for power with the foggy Chicago skyline in the background.
Amtrak P42 #3 and #68 sit under 18th St. waiting for clearance to move out past Lumber St, where eventually they would be wyed.
The Capitol Limited lead by units #198 and #96 passes Lumber St. grade crossing.
And finally inside Chicago Union Station, a view of the South Concourse with many P42s and their trains, including a new Phase 3 Viewliner 2 baggage car. At the time, the few that were already built were still out East, and that one was the first one various friends and I spotted in Chicago. I'm not sure why it was sitting inside Union Station by itself, but my speculation is that it could have been for baggage attendants who load and unload Amtrak trains to see how to use them. (a demonstration learning purposes) So at the time, it was special, now, they are all over the place.

I code-named this one "Trains, Planes, and Automobiles: The Real Life Trip Report". It's a play on the 1987 movie "Planes Trains and Automobiles", and it's fitting since I had similar luck. I had a sleeper in the last car of the train (Until St. Louis where they added an unusable coach class car to the end.) At the very end, you can see the inside of Chicago's Union Station. This is a condensed video showing the progress of AMTRAK's "California Zephyr" train from Chicago to Emeryville, near San Franciso, in late December, 2016. I edited down about four hours of video I took to and hour and a half, but pretty much everything of interest is represented in the version presented here. I think people interested in taking this great trip will get a good feeling of what they will see during the journey.
I have other videos about what it is like to ride an AMTRAK Superliner train, especially what to expect in a Roomette in a sleeper car on such a train. Accordingly I have NOT included that kind of information in this video.....it is just about the California Zephyr route and scenery.
In this video, you will see the departure from Chicago's Union Station, passing across northern Illinois, then continuing the next morning near Denver, Colorado, then the scenic passage over the Rocky Mountains, then continuing the next morning near Reno, Nevada, with the crossing of the Sierra Nevada mountains and finally the flat transit to the Bay Area and the arrival in Emeryville.
