It’s South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it’s Spud Milton’s first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal night swimming to the red-hot furnace of the cricket pitch, from ghost busting to a catastrophic family vacation. He also invites us into the mind of a boy struggling to come to terms with a strange new world, a boy whose eyes are being opened to love, friendship and complete insanity.

The year is 1991, and Spud Milton's long walk to manhood is still creeping along at an unnervingly slow pace.
Approaching the ripe old age of fifteen and still no signs of the much anticipated ball-drop, Spud is coming to terms with the fact that he may well be a freak of nature. With a mother hell-bent on emigrating, a father making a killing out of selling homemade moonshine, and a demented grandmother called Wombat, the new year seems to offer little except extreme embarrassment and more mortifying Milton madness.
But Spud is returning to a boarding school where he is no longer the youngest or the smallest. His dormitory mates, known as the Crazy Eight, have an unusual new member and his house has a new clutch of first years (the Normal Seven). If Spud thinks his second year will be a breeze, however, he is seriously mistaken.
He is soon beset with women trouble, coerced into misguided late-night adventures, and funds his dreams of a famous career on the stage in tatters after landing the part of the Dove of Peace in a disastrous house play production of Noah's Ark.
To top it all off, boarding master Sparerib and his prefects Death breath and Earthworm are concocting an almighty plan to get Spud and the Crazy 8 expelled!

World famous South African YouTuber Caspar Lee makes his screen debut in the role of garrulous Garlic from Malawi. They are joined by the rest of the Crazy 8 gang – Sven Ruygrok (Rambo), Byron Langley (Simon Brown), Travis Hornsby (Boggo), Blessing Xaba (Fatty), and Thomas Burne (Vern). Spud’s love interests are Genna Blair (Mermaid), and Alex McGregor (Christine). Aaron McIlroy and Julie Summers play Spud’s parents, with Brenda Ngxoli (Innocence) and Christine Le Brocq (Wombat).
Author John van de Ruit wrote the screenplay adaptation for the film, his first foray into screenwriting. John Barker of Bunny Chow and 31 Million Reasons fame comes on board as director, and brings some freshness to the third installment of the franchise.
The film is produced by Ross Garland of Rogue Star Films. Cinematographer Willie Nel joins the franchise for the first time, alongside 5FM DJ Jon Savage who composed the music in the film. Tsotsi alumnus and prolific editor Megan Gill, returns to edit.

Spud (2010)
PlotIt's South Africa 1990. Two major events are about to happen: The release of Nelson Mandela and, more importantly, it's Spud Milton's first year at an elite boys only private boarding school. John Milton is a boy from an ordinary background who wins a scholarship to a private school in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa. Surrounded by boys with nicknames like Gecko, Rambo, Rain Man and Mad Dog, Spud has his hands full trying to adapt to his new home. Along the way Spud takes his first tentative steps along the path to manhood. (The path it seems could be a rather long road). Spud is an only child. He is cursed with parents from well beyond the lunatic fringe and a senile granny. His dad is a fervent anti-communist who is paranoid that the family domestic worker is running a shebeen from her room at the back of the family home. His mom is a free spirit and a teenager's worst nightmare, whether it's shopping for Spud's underwear in the local supermarket, or sneaking food into her handbag at school functions. Armed with only his wits and his diary, Spud takes us from illegal night swimming to the red-hot furnace of the cricket pitch, from ghostbusting to a catastrophic family vacation. He also invites us into the mind of a boy struggling to come to terms with a strange new world, a boy whose eyes are being opened to love, friendship and complete insanity.

Just waited for ya. In the sixties, guys who wore cowboy hats and had cutesy names played poker. By 1980, some of them were still around, but they weren't the best no more. The new pros were math teachers, bankers, lawyers, scientists. Guys who stopped in Vegas for a vacation and figured out they could make more money doing this than any shitty 9-5er. Some of them made money. Some went broke and ran back to real life. Our favorite thing was to beat the shit outta some young hotshot. Some jerk-off who dominated his home poker game and thought he could make a livin' playin' it. Just destroy him. And the great thing for us was that Texas Hold'em was such an easy game. You get two private cards, five others are dealt up. Whoever makes the best five-card hand wins. Piece of cake. And more assholes showed up every day to prove they had it knocked. It was a fuckin' feast. 'Cause these donkeys never figured out that the game wasn't about cards. It was about people.
Stu 'Stuey' Ungar: [narrating] In 1949, Johnny Moss and Nick the Greek played heads-up poker at the front door of Binion's Horseshoe for five months straight. Five fuckin' months! People stood six-deep to watch. In 1970, Binion's had the first Series. Moss won all five games. By '80, there were over three hundred players, twenty events, and three million in prize money. Not that it mattered. You could make more money in side games. It was the fuckin' World Series of Poker, and either you had the chops to win a bracelet, or you didn't.

But Spud is returning to a boarding school where he is no longer the youngest or the smallest. His dormitory mates, known as the Crazy Eight, have an unusual new member and his house has a new clutch of first years (the Normal Seven). If Spud thinks his second year will be a breeze, however, he is seriously mistaken.
He is soon beset with women trouble, coerced into misguided late-night adventures, and funds his dreams of a famous career on the stage in tatters after landing the part of the Dove of Peace in a disastrous house play production of Noah's Ark.
To top it all off, boarding master Sparerib and his prefects Death breath and Earthworm are concocting an almighty plan to get Spud and the Crazy 8 expelled!

With a mother hell-bent on emigrating, a father making a killing out of selling homemade moonshine, and a demented grandmother called Wombat, the new year seems to offer little except extreme embarrassment and more mortifying Milton madness.
But Spud is returning to a boarding school where he is no longer the youngest or the smallest. His dormitory mates, known as the Crazy Eight, have an unusual new member and his house has a new clutch of first years (the Normal Seven). If Spud thinks his second year will be a breeze, however, he is seriously mistaken.
He is soon beset with women trouble, coerced into misguided late-night adventures, and funds his dreams of a famous career on the stage in tatters after landing the part of the Dove of Peace in a disastrous house play production of Noah's Ark.
To top it all off, boarding master Sparerib and his prefects Death breath and Earthworm are concocting an almighty plan to get Spud and the Crazy 8 expelled!
