Director Luc Besson heads back to the world of sci-fi and we’ve got your first look right now on Clevver
Newsfeed.
Stars Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne head to the far reaches of the galaxy in our first look at next summer’s Valerian.
Writer/director Luc Besson is no stranger to the world of sci-fi having been the man who brought us
1997’s
The Fifth Element and next year he returns to the genre with his most personal project yet. Valerian and the
City of a Thousand
Planets is set to arrive in theaters on July
21st, 2017 and it’s a project he’s been working on since he was 13.
Based on the popular
French comic book that was first published in 1967, Besson told
Entertainment Weekly that he fell in love with the comic when he was 10 and started writing a screenplay for a film a few years later. As for why it has taken him this long to finally bring the film to the big screen, Besson explained that the story only contains about
10 – 12 human characters with the rest consisting of various aliens. He didn’t feel like the technology existed to do the film justice until he saw
Avatar. Besson says after he saw that film he threw his original script in the garbage and started from scratch explaining that
James Cameron inspired him to finally make Valerian and do it the way it should be made. While there will be plenty of aliens in the film, Besson says he centered the story to make it more real and more human so even people who are not fans of sci-fi can enjoy the film. As for the plot, Valerian stars Dane DeHaan as the title character “Valerian” and
Cara Delevigne as his partner “
Laureline”, a pair of time-travelling agents who are attempting to solve a mystery. Besson explained that, unlike the
Marvel movies where you know who the villain is in the first five minutes, because Valerian involves a sort of police investigation, you won’t know until the end.
It’s for this reason he won’t say who the actual villain in the film is, which could be any of the movie’s co-stars that includes
John Goodman,
Clive Owen,
Ethan Hawke and pop superstar
Rihanna. What we do know is that the film will start with a
James Bond style chase and a new photo teases this with DeHaan and Delevigne attempting to escape while undercover, hence their clothing. Besson explains they have to try to escape during this mission which he says, will be a pretty funny moment in the film. Another first look image showcases one of the film’s non-human characters, known as “K-Tron”. Besson describes the large, black robot as a military police officer who isn’t really important in the movie, but showcases some of the designs we’ll see in the film. For fans of the comic, Besson says you won’t have a leg up on the film’s plot since they expanded the story to explore other worlds, but there will be elements in the film that you’ll recognize. So, who out there is excited for Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets? Do you think it will hold us over until
Star Wars Episode 8 arrives five months later?
