RALEIGH, N.C.(WNCN) – Donald Trump brought his high-powered and unique campaign to North Carolina Friday when he spoke at Dorton Arena in Raleigh. Trump spoke in a lively and entertaining form in front of thousands at Dorton Arena before a loud crowd. Trump said he was thrilled to be in North Carolina and read off recent polls that showed him in front nationally. In a 45-minute speech in which he took questions from the audience, he took shots at his opponents, acting like he was falling asleep when he spoke of Jeb Bush and jabbed Sen. Marco Rubio for missing Senate votes. Trump said his campaign would “take back” the country. “If I win, I am telling you, we are going to be so proud of our country – again,” he said. Many of his topics took on familiar conservative topics, such as limiting immigration, rebuilding the military and improving the economy. But he gave few specifics on how he would achieve his goals. He also continued his assault on his rivals, both among Democrats and Republicans. As expected, he took multiple shots at Democrat Hillary Clinton. “Hillary is going to be just as bad [as President Barack Obama],” he said. He said Clinton would make a speech and then go home and nap for four days. “This is not what we need from a president. We need someone with tremendous energy,” he said. Energy is something Trump had plenty of on Friday, and he continued to jab Republican rival Jeb Bush. Bush, the son of the former president, has struggled to gain traction in the polls despite huge name recognition and a massive campaign war chest. Trump read off a CNN poll that showed him in the lead and then took a swipe at Bush. “In the CNN poll, we’re at 36. Second place is 16. Then you have a 12, you have a four, you have a three. Who is three? Bush is three?” Trump then put both of his hands to his head like he was going to sleep and then said of Bush’s chances, “Bye bye.” He said he wanted a strong military. “I want to build our military so big, so strong and so powerful that nobody is going to mess with us,” he said. Trump continued to say he wanted to fence off Mexico to keep illegal immigrants from coming in. “We’re going to build the wall,” he said. “Mexico is going to pay for the wall. We are not going to let people into our country when we have no idea who we are.” He said the country could continue to allow immigrants, “but they have got to come in legally – legally.” Trump spoke broadly about education. “Common Core is a disaster. We have one of the worst education systems in the world,” he said. The answer, he said, was to give local governments more authority. After that happened, he said, “We are going to be shooting up in the charts. And we are going to save money.” Trump also had his speech interrupted five times by hecklers. “Isn’t it a shame? We have thousands of people pouring in and we have to waste time on one or two people. It’s really ridiculous,” he said. Trump took questions from the crowd. When the first one asked him, “What would you say to President Obama?” Trump immediately responded,. “You’re fired.” The comment was a reference to his former show on NBC. Early Friday afternoon, hundreds were in line to see Trump and heavy security was in place. Law enforcement officials swept the area earlier Friday afternoon and the search included bomb-sniffing dogs. Metal detectors were in place and bags will be checked for all those entering the building.
