Judy In The Area

Judy Nylon And Crucial - Pal Judy
Ripped from a vinyl album which defies all genres, released on On-U Sound Records (ON-U LP 16) in 1982 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A few of you have pointed out how certain albums have resurfaced as reissues on a revitalised On-U Sound, following their appearance here. I am sure it is coincidental ...or is it? Here is one that hasn't reappeared and due to a very limited initial (and only) pressing, has been regarded as quite rare. Good copies tend to fetch close to £100 - this immaculate one fell into my lap for close to peanuts. If this appears as a reissue in a few months time the theorists may well be proved right.
Judy Nylon had a good strong music pedigree following her move to London in the seventies. Her work with Brian Eno is etched deeply into music history, her work with Crucial  (the usual On-U Sound rhythm section suspects) and Adrian Sherwood has evaded many an ear. This stuff is timeless and genre defying, it tilts one way and then the next across both sides of the platter. From heavy London eighties dark dubs like Live In A Lift to the early eighties New York punk-funk sound on Sleepless Night and The Dice, poetry from early influences like Jamal and his Last Poets on the funky poetic of Trial By Fire. Room Without A View stands up as one of Sherwood's finest productions, as Nylon's sultry voice hovers over Sherwood's smooth dub soundtrack. And then of course there is Judy's wonderful strip club dub of Jailhouse Rock. Superb.

Strange Things Happen

London Underground - Watching West Indians In The Cold
Ripped from a 10" dub disco plate released on ON-U Sound Records (ON-U DP 4) in 1982 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Another of my wants list which fell into my lap a few months ago was this fine dub-punk EP from London Underground. Most of you should have rounded up the back catelogue from previous postings, Watching West Indians In The Cold completes the discography. As usual with ON-U stuff, Mr Sherwood mans the controls with splendid results.

Lifetones - For A Reason
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Tone Of Life Records (LTM 001) in 1983 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. The recent This Heat reissues have rekindled much interest in this unique beat combo. Charles Bullen moved on from This Heat with this heavy dub masterpiece which was influenced heavily by his Brixton roots, with a bit of help from Julius Samuel, he was Lifetones. Many would not have heard this album, though many will have known of its existence - copies tend to fetch a small fortune on the open market. Shortly to be reissued on Light In The Attic Records, here is a crystal sharp rip of an original album courtesy of blog follower TB. This post forms part of a short most wanted series of posts, well we can now say most-wanted, now obtained by this blogster.

Manic In The Middle

The Moffs - The Moffs
Originally released as a vinyl album on Citadel Records (CITLP 503) in 1985. Represented here from digital sources. If you enjoyed Another Day In The Sun, then you should love this. Sydney's Moffs led the Australian Eighties psyche revival movement, mixing in soft gentle and dreamy West Coast US sounds and sixties London mod-beats with lots distorted fuzzy psychedelic guitars. I am quite hooked on I Once Knew You with its gentle melancholy book ending a manic middle section. Floyd fans may appreciate the twelve minute journey through The Meadowsong.

Wide Open Road

The Triffids - Wide Open Road
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Hot Records (HOT 1230) in 1986 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. In short, a classic. Surprisingly quietly mastered to vinyl, but your resident blogster is reasonably chuffed with the quality and clarity of this rip, from what was a well won piece of plastic. Enjoy.

The Triffids - Raining Pleasure
Ripped from a vinyl mini-album released on Hot Records (MINIHOT 1) in 1984 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Apologies for the crackle, but my copy is somewhat worn. If you want it clean and click free go seek out the brickwalled compact disc reissues.

Stump - Charlton Heston Meets The Irresistible Force
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Ensign Records (ENYX 614) to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Stump go major label and released a dance mix mash-up! If Age Of Chance could do it, then so could Stump. Yikes!!

Beautiful Waste

The Triffids - You Don't Miss Your Water Till Your Well Runs Dry
Ripped from a 12" vinyl single released on Hot Records (HOT 1226) in 1985 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Country and folk are not usual genres featured among these pages, thankfully we can all find a good reason not to label The Triffids as such. You guessed it ...there will have to be more Triffids.

Colonic Detoxification

Stump - Mud On A Colon
Ripped from a 12" vinyl EP released on Ron Johnson Records (ZRON 6) in 1986 to high quality lossless flac audio. Is it funk or is it prog? Genre confused twisty jerky rhythms from these Anglo-Irish popsters who clearly found the groove with a good mix of Beefheart, (early) Genesis and Cameo. Frontman Mick Lynch sadly passed away in late 2015, Stump have gone, but we will never forget. More Stump will follow...(it must!).

Microdisney - We Hate You South African Bastards
Ripped from a vinyl mini album released on Rough Trade Records (RTM 155) in 1984 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. A bit crackly in places (please accept my apologies), but this is from my well worn copy of this classic compilation of Ireland's finest early and wholly unoffensive releases. Have we forgotten Microdisney these days? Of course not, and this serves a stark reminder of what our world was like thirty years ago. More Disney will follow eventually....

Just Splendid

Felt - The Spendour Of Fear
Originally released on a vinyl mini-album on Cherry Red Records (MRED 57). Presented here from a more recent compact disc issue. I mentioned melancholy a little earlier, no word sums up Felt better than that. In my opinion Splendour Of Fear is easily their best work, and as usual, there will be other opinions. Largely an instrumental work, so if like me, you tend to struggle a bit with Lawrence's voice, then that is a good thing. I am rambling on again ....

Wet And Windy Wednesday Morning

The Moffs - Another Day In The Sun
Ripped from a 7" vinyl single released on Citadel Records (CIT 012) in 1985 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. It is a cold, damp and blustery morning here in the capital. Here's a little something to brighten your day. Melancholy psychedelic guitar pop from Australia to cheer you up ....yes, sad songs cheer me up..... does that make me odd? Probably ...but then of course, perhaps we are all odd! I have an album of Moffs somewhere, so that may eventually follow. Enjoy my chums.

Cool Lines

The Lines - Cool Snap!
Ripped from a 12" vinyl EP released on Red Records (RL 12005) in 1980 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Superb guitar pop from London's new wave post-punksters The Lines. Very much a blink and you'll miss them act, The Lines hung around for a few years, managing a couple of albums and tours with The Cure and Alternative TV. Thanks to a friend in Scotland and his box of magical delights.

Golden Class

The Misunderstood - Golden Glass
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Time Stood Still Records (TSS LP1) in 1984 to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. Out of Riverside, California came The Misunderstood, who with a big hand up from John Ravenscroft (as he originally was known). Under Peel's mentoring they came to the UK in 1966, where they became part of the London psychedelia scene rubbing shoulders with The Pink Floyd and The Move. Cherry Red started a small reissue campaign in the early eighties, with the appearance of I Unseen on the Pillows And Prayers compilation. Their greatest contribution to popular music can be found on side A track two. Play loud ....enjoy!

Post-Neu!

Various - Brand Neu!
Ripped from a compact disc album released on Feraltone (FER 02CD) in 2009 to high quality lossless flac audio. An interesting compilation of bands who claim a modern day Neu! influence. Some were Neu!, some seem to be quite genuine, some where influenced by earlier bands influenced by Neu! ...and others were clearly lying just to get onboard!

Always Now .....Always Contemporary

Section 25 - The Key Of Dreams
Ripped from a vinyl album released on Factory Benelux Records (FBN 14) in 1982 to high resolution 24-bit flac. Stunningly evocative piece of work or compilation of leftovers from the Always Now sessions? You decide ....I know which camp I sit with. Always Now ....Always Contemporary ...potentially a much overlooked work of genius. Self produced by the band but The Key Of Dreams borrows many of the studio techniques adopted by Always Now album producer Martin Hannett.

Neu! - Neu!
Originally released on a vinyl album on Brain Records (BRAIN 1004) in 1972. Ripped here from a subsequent repressing to high resolution 24-bit flac audio. It's all about Hallogallo and Negativland isn't it? You'll struggle to find anything as groundbreaking released before the Neu! debut. Thousands of subsequent careers have been built upon the sound and grooves first heard here. Enjoy.
