In this video I will describe how I cut, light taste and smoke a cigar. There are many ways to do everything with a cigar but this is how I enjoy them and get the best possible flavors out of each one.
First of all a big disclaimer: everything stated here is my OPINION. As is EVERY other how to video on smoking, keeping, fondling, etc. cigars. If you disagree with any of my OPINIONS here, that's cool. But I don't care. I'm putting this info out there because I get multiple requests for it every week, so I want to help those looking for the info. I realize there are probably 100 other articles on it already, but I'm going to give my OPINIONS and talk about what I prefer.
Enjoy the video, but if you feel the need to tell me I'm 'wrong' about any of these OPINIONS, do everyone else a favor and keep it to yourself, or better yet, make your own video with your own OPINIONS. :)

How To Smoke A Cigar
In order to enjoy a cigar like a true enthusiast, you must first learn the anatomy of a cigar. A cigar is made up of 3 parts: the head, the end of the cigar in which you smoke. The body, where you hold the cigar, and the foot, the end of the cigar that you light.
The point of enjoying a cigar is to get a mouth full of cool smoke that is filled with flavor. You DON’T inhale it. You simply want to
experience the flavors.
Using a cigar cutter, make a quick clean cut above the cap on the head of the cigar. For more information on how to cut a cigar, visit www.cigarsinternational.com and check out our cigar 101 videos.
To hold the cigar properly, rest the cigar on your middle finger and
wrap your index finger around it.
Removing the band is a personal choice. If you want to remove the
band, it is wise to smoke the cigar a little bit. The heat from the
cigar will loosen the adhesive on the band - thus making it easier to remove without damaging the cigar.
To light the cigar, you need to light the FOOT and NOT THE HEAD of the cigar. The head is the end in which you just cut.
In order to ensure the cigar lights evenly, you’ll need to toast the
foot. Place the cigar NEAR the flame and rotate it around, heating
the tobacco to the point of combustion.
DO NOT put the cigar directly into the flame. This will char the
cigar, altering it’s taste.
The type of flame you choose is a matter of personal preference. Just about any flame will do in a pinch. For more information on lighters, visit www.cigarsinternational.com
Once you’ve toasted the cigar, turn the cigar around and blow on the foot. The red ember will show you just how evenly lit your cigar is. If there are dark spots, you’ll need to touch them up. Turn the
cigar back around and keep toasting as previously described.
Taking a draw on a cigar is just like sucking through a straw
without swallowing. Taste the flavor of smoke in your mouth and
then blow the smoke out of your mouth.
Take a nice even draw. Be careful, drawing too quickly will cause the cigar to heat up at a rapid rate and will effect the flavor.
In general, it’s best to take 2-3 draws per minute. You want your
cigar to be as cool as possible without going out. If your cigar
happens to go out, no big deal, just simply remove the ash and
relight as described previously.
You don’t want to remove your ash too often. A long ash is a sign of a well rolled cigar and will help keep you cigar cool.
If the need for removing the ash arises, DO NOT tap it. Instead,
lightly roll it along the lip of an ash tray and the ash will fall off.
When finished, simply put the cigar down in an ashtray and let it extinguish itself out. Most cigars will take 15-20 min to go out.

A cigar is a tightly-rolled bundle of dried and fermented tobacco that is ignited so that its smoke may be drawn into the mouth. Cigar tobacco is grown in significant quantities in Brazil, Cameroon, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, Honduras, Indonesia, Mexico, Nicaragua, the Philippines, and the Eastern United States.
The word "cigar" originated from sikar, the Yucatec Mayan word for smoking, which became cigarro in Spanish, probably from the Mayan sikar ("to smoke rolled tobacco leaves" – from sik, "tobacco;") or from the Spanish word cigarra ("grasshopper"). However, the word itself, and variations on it, did not come into general use until 1730. New names for cigars include "Jules", "Havana", "Vitole" and "Puro".
Explorer Christopher Columbus is generally credited with the introduction of tobacco to Europe. Two of Columbus's crewmen during his 1492 journey, Rodrigo de Jerez and Luis de Torres, are said to have encountered tobacco for the first time on the island of Hispaniola, when natives presented them with dry leaves that spread a peculiar fragrance. Tobacco was widely diffused among all of the islands of the Caribbean and therefore they again encountered it in Cuba where Columbus and his men had settled. His sailors reported that the Taínos on the island of Cuba smoked a primitive form of cigar, with twisted, dried tobacco leaves rolled in other leaves such as palm or plantain.

Arnold Alois Schwarzenegger (
/ˈʃwɔrtsənɛɡər/; German: [ˈaɐnɔlt ˈalɔʏs ˈʃvaɐtsənˌʔɛɡɐ]; born July 30, 1947) is an Austrian and American former professional bodybuilder, actor, businessman, investor, and politician. Schwarzenegger served as the 38th Governor of California from 2003 until 2011.
Schwarzenegger began to weight train at the age of 15 years old. He was awarded the title of Mr. Universe at age 20 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest seven times. Schwarzenegger has remained a prominent presence in the sport of bodybuilding and he has written several books and numerous articles on the sport. Schwarzenegger gained worldwide fame as a Hollywood action film icon. He was nicknamed the "Austrian Oak" and the "Styrian Oak" in his bodybuilding days, "Arnie" during his acting career and more recently the "Governator" (from "Governor" and "Terminator").
As a Republican, he was first elected on October 7, 2003, in a special recall election to replace then-Governor Gray Davis. Schwarzenegger was sworn in on November 17, 2003, to serve the remainder of Davis's term. Schwarzenegger was then re-elected on November 7, 2006, in California's 2006 gubernatorial election, to serve a full term as governor, defeating Democrat Phil Angelides, who was California State Treasurer at the time. Schwarzenegger was sworn in for his second term on January 5, 2007.

How To Smoke A Cigar
In order to enjoy a cigar like a true enthusiast, you must first learn the anatomy of a cigar. A cigar is made up of 3 parts: the head, the end of the cigar in which you smoke. The body, where you hold the cigar, and the foot, the end of the cigar that you light.
The point of enjoying a cigar is to get a mouth full of cool smoke that is filled with flavor. You DON’T inhale it. You simply want to
experience the flavors.
Using a cigar cutter, make a quick clean cut above the cap on the head of the cigar. For more information on how to cut a cigar, visit www.cigarsinternational.com and check out our cigar 101 videos.
To hold the cigar properly, rest the cigar on your middle finger and
wrap your index finger around it.
Removing the band is a personal choice. If you want to remove the
band, it is wise to smoke the cigar a little bit. The heat from the
cigar will loosen the adhesive on the band - thus making it easier to remove without damaging the cigar.
To light the cigar, you need to light the FOOT and NOT THE HEAD of the cigar. The head is the end in which you just cut.
In order to ensure the cigar lights evenly, you’ll need to toast the
foot. Place the cigar NEAR the flame and rotate it around, heating
the tobacco to the point of combustion.
DO NOT put the cigar directly into the flame. This will char the
cigar, altering it’s taste.
The type of flame you choose is a matter of personal preference. Just about any flame will do in a pinch. For more information on lighters, visit www.cigarsinternational.com
Once you’ve toasted the cigar, turn the cigar around and blow on the foot. The red ember will show you just how evenly lit your cigar is. If there are dark spots, you’ll need to touch them up. Turn the
cigar back around and keep toasting as previously described.
Taking a draw on a cigar is just like sucking through a straw
without swallowing. Taste the flavor of smoke in your mouth and
then blow the smoke out of your mouth.
Take a nice even draw. Be careful, drawing too quickly will cause the cigar to heat up at a rapid rate and will effect the flavor.
In general, it’s best to take 2-3 draws per minute. You want your

How To Smoke A Cigar
In order to enjoy a cigar like a true enthusiast, you must first learn the anatomy of a cigar. A cigar is made up of 3 parts: the head, the end of the cigar in which you smoke. The body, where you hold the cigar, and the foot, the end of the cigar that you light.
The point of enjoying a cigar is to get a mouth full of cool smoke that is filled with flavor. You DON’T inhale it. You simply want to
experience the flavors.
Using a cigar cutter, make a quick clean cut above the cap on the head of the cigar. For more information on how to cut a cigar, visit www.cigarsinternational.com and check out our cigar 101 videos.
To hold the cigar properly, rest the cigar on your middle finger and
wrap your index finger around it.
Removing the band is a personal choice. If you want to remove the
band, it is wise to smoke the cigar a little bit. The heat from the
cigar will loosen the adhesive on the band - thus making it easier to remove without damaging the cigar.
To light the cigar, you need to light the FOOT and NOT THE HEAD of the cigar. The head is the end in which you just cut.
In order to ensure the cigar lights evenly, you’ll need to toast the
foot. Place the cigar NEAR the flame and rotate it around, heating
the tobacco to the point of combustion.
DO NOT put the cigar directly into the flame. This will char the
cigar, altering it’s taste.
The type of flame you choose is a matter of personal preference. Just about any flame will do in a pinch. For more information on lighters, visit www.cigarsinternational.com
Once you’ve toasted the cigar, turn the cigar around and blow on the foot. The red ember will show you just how evenly lit your cigar is. If there are dark spots, you’ll need to touch them up. Turn the
cigar back around and keep toasting as previously described.
Taking a draw on a cigar is just like sucking through a straw
without swallowing. Taste the flavor of smoke in your mouth and
then blow the smoke out of your mouth.
Take a nice even draw. Be careful, drawing too quickly will cause the cigar to heat up at a rapid rate and will effect the flavor.

This $750 7.5x52 stick features a dark tan wrapper with slight stretch marks, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, large double cap soft even pack and rich sweet cocoa aroma much like Patron XO. First light reveals a great draw with plentiful mild-medium artificially sweet cocoa notes and a short smooth creamy finish. The first third shows much the same profile just turning down the sweetness. The smoke is definitely soft, mild and creamy on the draw while the finish gets longer. The 2nd third transitions slowly keeping the same core but adding a mild salty roasted nut to the draw although it was fleeting for just 15 minutes. The finish stays very smooth with an additional oily spice lingering on the lips. Burn is perfect and it hits the band point around the hour mark. Ending at 1:05 the last bit turned very warm, dropping all the infused flavors just leaving the zingy nuttiness through the draw and finish.

This $750 7.5x52 stick features a dark tan wrapper with slight stretch marks, minimal veins, tight invisible seams, large double cap soft even pack and rich sweet cocoa aroma much like Patron XO. First light reveals a great draw with plentiful mild-medium artificially sweet cocoa notes and a short smooth creamy finish. The first third shows much the same profile just turning down the sweetness. The smoke is definitely soft, mild and creamy on the draw while the finish gets longer. The 2nd third transitions slowly keeping the same core but adding a mild salty roasted nut to the draw although it was fleeting for just 15 minutes. The finish stays very smooth with an additional oily spice lingering on the lips. Burn is perfect and it hits the band point around the hour mark. Ending at 1:05 the last bit turned very warm, dropping all the infused flavors just leaving the zingy nuttiness through the draw and finish.

a. A butane torch lighter is the most popular method to light a cigar because it’s quick and efficient and requires the least skill.
b. A soft flame lighter has the benefit of bringing the tobacco up to temperature more slowly. The downside is it take more work to fully ignite the foot. It’s also less precise if you need to touch up the cigar.
c. Matches are the preferred method of cigar purists because there is no fuel to taint the flavor of the cigar. That said, today’s butane burns very clean. The downside to matches is they are the slowest to light and the least windproof. In addition, matches can break causing an accident.
2. Pre-light tests
a. Once you light a cigar there is no going back. It is import to inspect you cigar before enjoyment to ensure the best experience.
b. Squeeze test
i. Put the cigar next to your ear and give it a gentle squeeze. If you hear the tobacco cracking loudly the cigar is too dry. If you hear nothing and the cigar feel soft the cigar is too wet. If you hear faint crackle and the cigar springs back when you squeeze it, then it’s perfectly humidified and ready to be enjoyed.
c. Pre-light aroma
i. Remove you cigar from the cellophane and smell the foot. If the tobacco smells good, it usually will taste good. If they is a bitter or ammonia like smell the cigar needs more time to age in your humidor. Don’t fret, ammonia is a natural byproduct of cigar fermentation.
d. Cold draw
i. After passing the first two tests, cut off the cap and take a draw. This serves two purposes: one, it ensures a proper cut and even draw and two, you can taste the tobacco before you light the cigar. A cigar that tastes unpleasant should return to your humidor to further age.
3. Toasting the foot
a. Taking your time to light a cigar will save you a whole lot of hassle. Start by toasting the foot by keeping the flame near but not touching the tobacco. You want to gradually ignite the foot. It’s a lot like cooking a fine roast. You can cook a roast quickly at a high temperature, but it won’t taste as good as a slow cooked roast that has ample time to reach it’s final temperature.
4. Draw and roll
a. After the foot has a gentle char, insert the cigar in your mouth and draw. The flame from the lighter will pull towards the foot. With each draw roll the cigar a ¼ turn with your index finger and thumb. Repeat 4-6 turns. Remember to draw the flame to the cigar and not the cigar to the flame. This will prevent scorching the wrapper.
5. Check your work
a. This is the most overlooked step. After 4-6 draw turn the foot of your cigar towards you gently blow on it. If the entire foot lights up orange you have completed a perfect light. If not, take note of the unlit area and repeat the draw and roll. A good burn requires a good light. If all you cigars are burning crooked, it likely has more to do with the light than construction of the cigar.
6. Expert Tip
a. Touch ups
i. Even the best light can be susceptible to an uneven burn for a multitude of reasons. If the imperfection is minimal I recommend allowing the cigar to correct itself first. If it interferes with your enjoyment, correct the burn by removing the ash and lighting the unlit area.
b. Using a cedar to light
i. If you want show off or like a challenge, light your cigar with a cedar spill. A cedar spill is a thin piece of cedar designed to light cigars. You can make your own by looking inside a box of cigars for a thin piece of cedar. Break off a ½” slice and ignite it with your lighter. The taste of burning cedar complements the tobacco and ensures the sulfur fumes of matches or a slight hint of butane from your lighter never get near your cigar.
