The United Nations has strongly condemned the deadly bombing near Iraq’s southern city of Hillah.
The UN chief’s special representative said the terrorists are seeking to undermine Iraq’s unity and fuel sectarian strife. Jan Kubis called on Iraqis not to be frightened by terrorists’ murderous campaign. On Sunday, at least 60 people lost their lives and more than 70 others were wounded in Hillah. Officials said a bomber blew up an explosive-laden fuel truck at a crowded checkpoint in the city. Daesh claimed responsibility for the bombing.

STORYLINE:
Fighters from Muqtada al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army moved through the streets of Hillah on Friday, the first time members of the militia have been seen in the town, close to the ancient city of Babylon.
Armed with RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) and AK47s the fighters took up positions in the centre of Hillah and exchanged fire with Iraqi police.
The militants took control of two police stations, according to reports from an eyewitness.
The al-Mahdi Army has been active up to now in mostly in Baghdad and to the south of Hillah in Najaf, Kut, Nasiriyah, Basra and Amarah.

STORYLINE:
Attacks on Shiite pilgrims showed no sign of easing on Wednesday with at least 11 people killed by bombs and gunfire as they streamed toward a Muslim shrine ahead of a weekend holiday.
The targeted violence came a day after two suicide bombers exploded themselves among pilgrims lining up at a checkpoint in Hillah, killing at least 120 people and wounding about 190, police and hospital officials said.
On Wednesday, mourners carried coffins through Hillah, about 95 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, where a main street became a swamp of blood and debris after the twin attack.
''While we were standing here, somebody came with a sandwich in his hand and started shouting 'God is great' and blew himself up among the pilgrims,'' said one pilgrim who witnessed the attacks.
Bodies in plastic bags were lined up outside the city's hospital, where the wounded lay on gurneys in crowded hallways.
A large funeral procession also took place in the holy city of Najaf.
The Hillah bombings and other attacks on Shiites have been blamed on Sunni insurgents, trying to destabilise Iraq's Shiite-dominated government and push the country toward civil war.
The victims had been headed to Karbala, 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Baghdad, for weekend rites marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Hussein died near Karbala in a 7th-century battle and is revered as a saint by Shiites.
The biggest attack on pilgrims on Wednesday occurred in Dora, a mostly Sunni neighbourhood of southern Baghdad, where a roadside bomb killed at least seven people, police said.
Immediately after the blast, gunmen moved in and fired on the victims. About 14 were wounded, they said.
Hours later, pilgrims continued to stream through the neighbourhood, stepping over spent ammunition that littered a main thoroughfare.
Gunmen also opened fire on Shiite pilgrims on a bridge in southeastern Baghdad, killing three and wounding five, police said.
Another shooting left one pilgrim dead and four wounded in central Baghdad, police said.

Hillah (Arabic: الحلة), also spelled Hilla or Al Hillah (BGN: Al Ḩillah) is a city in central Iraq on the Hilla branch of the Euphrates River, 100 km (62 mi) south of Baghdad. The population is estimated at 364,700 in 1998. It is the capital of Babylon Province and is located adjacent to the ancient city of Babylon, and close to the ancient cities of Borsippa and Kish. It is situated in a predominantly agricultural region which is extensively irrigated with water provided by the Hilla canal, producing a wide range of cereals, fruit and textiles.
The city was once a major center of Islamic scholarship and education. The tomb of the Jewish prophet Ezekiel is reputed to be located in a nearby village.
It became a major administrative centre during the rule of the Ottoman and British Empires. In the 19th century, the Hilla branch of the Euphrates started to silt up and much agricultural land was lost to drought, but this process was reversed by the construction of the Hindiya Barrage in 1911–1913, which diverted water from the deeper Hindiya branch of the Euphrates into the Hilla canal. It saw heavy fighting in 1920 during an uprising against the British, when 300 men of the Manchester Regiment were apparently defeated in the city.[citation needed] It is said to be where the Hanging Gardens of Babylon once were.

STORYLINE:
Fighters from Muqtada al-Sadr's al-Mahdi Army moved through the streets of Hillah on Friday, the first time members of the militia have been seen in the town, close to the ancient city of Babylon.
Armed with RPGs (rocket propelled grenades) and AK47s the fighters took up positions in the centre of Hillah and exchanged fire with Iraqi police.
The militants took control of two police stations, according to reports from an eyewitness.
The al-Mahdi Army has been active up to now in mostly in Baghdad and to the south of Hillah in Najaf, Kut, Nasiriyah, Basra and Amarah.

STORYLINE:
Attacks on Shiite pilgrims showed no sign of easing on Wednesday with at least 11 people killed by bombs and gunfire as they streamed toward a Muslim shrine ahead of a weekend holiday.
The targeted violence came a day after two suicide bombers exploded themselves among pilgrims lining up at a checkpoint in Hillah, killing at least 120 people and wounding about 190, police and hospital officials said.
On Wednesday, mourners carried coffins through Hillah, about 95 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, where a main street became a swamp of blood and debris after the twin attack.
''While we were standing here, somebody came with a sandwich in his hand and started shouting 'God is great' and blew himself up among the pilgrims,'' said one pilgrim who witnessed the attacks.
Bodies in plastic bags were lined up outside the city's hospital, where the wounded lay on gurneys in crowded hallways.
A large funeral procession also took place in the holy city of Najaf.
The Hillah bombings and other attacks on Shiites have been blamed on Sunni insurgents, trying to destabilise Iraq's Shiite-dominated government and push the country toward civil war.
The victims had been headed to Karbala, 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of Baghdad, for weekend rites marking the end of a 40-day mourning period for the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad.
Hussein died near Karbala in a 7th-century battle and is revered as a saint by Shiites.
The biggest attack on pilgrims on Wednesday occurred in Dora, a mostly Sunni neighbourhood of southern Baghdad, where a roadside bomb killed at least seven people, police said.
Immediately after the blast, gunmen moved in and fired on the victims. About 14 were wounded, they said.
Hours later, pilgrims continued to stream through the neighbourhood, stepping over spent ammunition that littered a main thoroughfare.
Gunmen also opened fire on Shiite pilgrims on a bridge in southeastern Baghdad, killing three and wounding five, police said.
Another shooting left one pilgrim dead and four wounded in central Baghdad, police said.

There was a grim procession outside Hillah''s hospital on Tuesday, as dozens of coffins were loaded onto cars in preparation for funeral marches, with many of the dead being taken to the holy Shiite city of Najaf for burial.
Distraught mourners prayed over the coffins before accompanying relatives killed in the bombing on their final journey.
On Monday, a suicide bomber killed 120 police and National Guard recruits lined up outside a medical clinic in Hillah, a predominantly Shiite town just 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
It was the single deadliest attack since the fall of Saddam Hussein.
Some of the victims were shoppers or vendors from a nearby outdoor street market selling produce, sandwiches and other food. But most were recruits waiting outside the clinic.
Hillah is located just below the so called "triangle of death," the mixed Sunni-Shiite region south of the capital that has earned that description
owing to the frequency of militant attacks.
Monday''s bombing presented the fiercest challenge yet to Iraq''s efforts to build a security force that can take over from the Americans.
The bombing comes at a time when the Sunni insurgency is trying to severely undermine the formation of a new government set to be led by majority Shiites for the first time in modern history.
Iraqi forces are eventually to take over security - the key to Washington''s exit strategy - but they remain under-equipped, ill-prepared to fight insurgents and, as a result, are often easy targets.
The Shiites have refrained from striking back - mostly at the behest of their most revered leader, Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani, who is widely
credited with bringing them this far.
Al-Sistani wants nothing to impede the Shiites from gaining the political power they have craved in Iraq, and will not allow them to engage in a sectarian war.
Finding a way to end the largely Sunni insurgency and soothe the fears of Sunnis who have dominated the Iraqi political sphere for centuries will be
the most crucial and complex task for the new Iraqi government.

At least five people were killed in Iraq on Sunday when a bomb attached to a bicycle exploded near the southern city of Hillah, and at least six others were killed in violence across the country, police said.
They said another 37 people were injured in the blast at a popular fruit and vegetable market in Musayyib district near Hillah, the capital of Babil province, 60 miles (95 kilometres) south of Baghdad.
Also Sunday, three people were killed when a bomb that was detonated remotely exploded on a bus as the vehicle approached a police checkpoint in the southern holy city of Karbala, 50 miles (80 kilometres) south of Baghdad, officials and health officials said.
12 other people were wounded, they said.
The blast took place at about 1:00 p.m. (1000 GMT).
The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak to the press.
Meanwhile, police in the western city of Ramadi said two people, including a policeman, were killed when two car bombs exploded minutes apart in the visitors' parking lot of the city's Traffic Police Directorate.
Four people were injured in the attack, a police official said.
Ramadi is the capital of Iraq's Anbar province, located 70 miles (115 kilometres) west of Baghdad.
Sunday's explosions came hours after at least three mortar rounds slammed into a commercial thoroughfare in the Abu Dishir neighbourhood in southwestern Baghdad, killing one civilian and wounding seven others, according to police and eyewitnesses.
The bloodshed came as Iraqi lawmakers intensify negotiations over a new election law that many hope will hasten the end of political gridlock over control of oil-rich Kirkuk - an old dispute between Arabs and Kurds that has threatened Iraq's fragile stability as US troops prepare to leave the country.
The Iraqi government, facing a January election, has been under intense pressure to show that the military and police are able to handle security as US troops slowly withdraw.
The incidents also came a week after attacks in downtown Baghdad killed 155 people, the worst in Iraq in two years.
Many are questioning the ability of the government led by Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki to protect its people.
An al-Qaida umbrella group in Iraq has claimed responsibility for last week's bombings.

Another 22 were injured.
The city, 95 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad, has suffered some of the deadliest blasts since the war began four years ago.
On March 6 this year a double suicide bombing against a crowd of Shiite pilgrims that killed 120 people.
Meanwhile in northern Iraq, a car exploded at about 0700 (1100GMT) after the driver parked it near Iraqis looking for work in the centre of Tuz Khormato, 210 kilometres (130 miles) north of Baghdad.
The driver and two workers were killed and 11 others injured in the attack, police said.
Police said the driver apparently intended to wait until more workers had gathered before detonating the explosives, but they went off prematurely.
Two separate incidents of improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploding near US military vehicles in Baghdad were reported on Saturday.
Also on Saturday, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploded near US military patrols.
The first targetted a US convoy in the Al-Ilam area of south-western Baghdad, causing serious damage.
The second exploded near another US military convoy in the Al-Binook neighbourhood of Baghdad, setting a US military Humvee on fire.
There were no immediate reports of casualties from either blast.

A suicide bomber blew himself up in a central Baghdad hotel on Monday, killing 12 people, including a US-allied tribal sheik, and injuring 21, police said.
The bombing at the high-rise Mansour Hotel, on the west bank of the Tigris River in central Baghdad, struck at about noon local time
(0800 GMT) as the lobby bustled with members of news media organisations headquartered at the hotel and other guests, witnesses said.
A man wearing a belt of explosives walked into the lobby, approached the reception desk and detonated his bomb, police reported.
Police said the dead included Fassal al-Guood, a Ramadi tribal sheik and former governor of Anbar province who was a leader of the Anbar Salvation Council, which has partnered with US and Iraqi officials.
A noted Iraqi poet, Rahim al-Maliki, was also killed, said Iraqi Media Net.
At least 21 other people were reported wounded.
The Mansour also houses the Chinese Embassy and a number of Iraqi parliament members.
The attack was the fifth in a string of suicide and other bombings striking Iraq on Monday morning, from Mosul and Beiji in the north to Hillah in the south.
In Hillah, a suicide car bomber struck a checkpoint near the governor's offices in the predominantly Shiite southern city, killing at least eight people and wounding 31, police said.
Three of the eight killed in the 6:30 a.m (0230GMT) explosion were policemen, as were at least four of the wounded, said a spokesman for the provincial police department.
The attacker drove his car into a checkpoint that leads to the headquarters of the Babil provincial government.
The blast damaged the concrete walls surrounding the main building and shattered glass, but relatively few people were in the area because of the early hour, limiting the casualties, the police spokesman said.
One police officer said he saw a red sedan speeding toward the headquarters, surprising police at the checkpoint and on the building's roof.
It was the second such attack in Hillah in three days.

Officials say a bomber blew up an explosives-laden fuel truck at a crowded checkpoint in the city of Hillah. Over 70 others were also injured. Daesh terrorist group has claimed responsibility for the attack. A similar explosion at a checkpoint on the outskirts of Hillah killed 50 people and wounded more than 150 others in March 2014.

Back-to-back explosions tore through tents housing Shiite pilgrims in central Iraq on Thursday, the deadliest in a wave of bombings that killed at least 43 people nationwide, officials said.
The attacks in Hillah began with a roadside bombing near tents set up for Shiites commemorating the 17th century death of the Prophet Muhammad's grandson, Imam Hussein. That was quickly followed by a car bomb targeting emergency response teams.
The explosions, which occurred in a busy commercial area, killed at least 29 people and wounded as many as 90, a police officer said, making it the deadliest attack in the city this year.
Twisted and charred vehicles were left outside damaged stores as shopkeepers collected their strewn merchandise from the bloodstained pavement.
Hillah is 95 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
"The ambulance immediately rushed to the scene to evacuate injured people. I was able to evacuate a little girl who was injured and I have sent her to her family. There were pieces of flesh all over the place," said one eyewitness, Ahmed Hussein.
Just hours earlier, a parked car exploded near the shrine of Imam Hussein in the Shiite city of Karbala, killing six people and wounding 20, another police officer said.
Karbala, 90 kilometres (55 miles) south of Baghdad, is one of the holiest cities in Shiite Islam and the place where Imam Hussein and his brother, Imam Abbas, are buried. Hundreds of thousands of Shiites flock to their golden-domed shrines every year.
Such religious ceremonies have often been targeted by Sunni insurgents seeking to foment sectarian violence and undermine the Shiite-led government.
A suicide bomber also drove his explosives-laden car into a police checkpoint in the mainly Sunni city of Fallujah, 65 kilometres (40 miles) west of the capital, killing three policemen and wounding 11 others, a police official in the city said.
And in the northern city of Mosul, a parked car bomb went off as a police patrol passed, killing two people and wounded two, police said. Another police patrol was hit by a roadside bomb in the town of Balad Ruz, 70 kilometres (45 miles) northeast of Baghdad, killing one policeman and wounding six others.
In other violence, a roadside bomb killed an Iraqi soldier and wounded five others in Taji, north of Baghdad, and a parked car bomb struck a restaurant in Madain, southeast of the capital, killing a civilian and wounding 12 others, according to police.
Five health officials confirmed the casualty figures. All the officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they weren't authorised to release the information.
The nationwide death toll was the highest since October 27 when 40 people were killed in a string of bombings and other attacks around the country.

Residents of a suburb outside the Iraqi town of Hillah began clearing debris from around a Shiite mosque on Saturday, a day after a car bomb exploded nearby killing 17 people and injuring 48, according to latest figures from local officials.
People had gathered for the funeral of a local sheikh in al-Khafaji, near Hillah, about 60 miles (95 kilometres) south of Baghdad, when the attack happened.
The car was located in a parking lot of the mosque. The mosque as well as a nearby vending stalls were damaged in the attack.
The injured were being treated at a hospital in Hillah.
The explosion triggered new anger at Iraq''''s leaders and their armed forces, who will soon take over responsibility for the country''''s security on their own as US troops rapidly leave the country.
Violence has dropped since the height of Iraq''''s bloodshed a few years ago, but Iraqi forces have failed to stop attacks that continue to claim lives daily.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility, but Sunni militants such as al-Qaida often target Shiite mosques and neighbourhoods as a way to stir up sectarian violence.
Friday evening''''s blast happened not far from another strike earlier this month that police and hospital officials said killed 15 people and wounded 41.
In that September 14 attack, a car bomb parked outside a restaurant in the Hillah suburb village of al-Shumali exploded as police were eating breakfast inside.
The attacks come at a precarious time for Iraq, torn between wanting to assert its sovereignty without the help of US forces while also recognising that its own soldiers and police are not yet ready to stop militants on their own.
Iraqi leaders are grappling with whether they will formally ask the US President Barack Obama''''s administration to keep a few thousand US troops in Iraq beyond the military''''s December 31 withdrawal deadline.
Talks among the leaders of Iraq''''s top political groups are expected to ramp up next week.

STORYLINE:
Iraq and Jordan engaged in a tit-for-tat withdrawal of high-level diplomatic representatives in a growing dispute over Iraqi government claims that Jordan is failing to block militants from entering the country.
The Jordanian Culture Minister Asma Khadar, said that the Jordanian diplomats were called home both for "security reasons" and for "consultation." But she said the government hoped that they could return to Iraq "very soon".
Jordan acted first, when Foreign Minister Hani al-Mulqi announced Sunday that his charge d'affaires in Baghdad had been recalled to Amman.
The Iraqi ambassador to Jordan was withdrawn later in the day.
The events capped a week of rising tensions that included a protest in which Shiite demonstrators raised the Iraqi flag over the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad.
Also last week, the Shiite clergy-backed United Iraqi Alliance claimed that Jordan was allowing militants to slip into Iraq.
Shiites began holding protests after the Iraqi government on March 14 condemned celebrations allegedly held by the family of a Jordanian man suspected of carrying out a February 28 attack that killed 125 people in Hillah, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
Nearly all the victims were Shiite police and army recruits.
The Jordanian daily 'Al-Ghad' reported that a man called Raed Mansour al-Banna carried out the attack, the single deadliest of the Iraqi insurgency.
The newspaper later issued a correction, however, saying it was not known where al-Banna carried out an assault.
Al-Banna's family has denied his involvement in the Hillah attack.

"My son worked with the UN in Jordan helping Iraqi refugees and observing their situation in Jordan. Then he left to the (United) States and worked in California at an airport. Then he went to Saudi Arabia to find a job there. Then we received the news that my son had been killed in Iraq and an Iraqi called me telling me that my son was buried in Mosul. We didn't know anything about Raed bombing himself in Hillah. I cried for the victims in the Hillah bombing, but definitely my son had nothing to do with it and killing any civilians there."

STORYLINE:
Iraq and Jordan engaged in a tit-for-tat withdrawal of high-level diplomatic representatives in a growing dispute over Iraqi government claims that Jordan is failing to block militants from entering the country.
The Jordanian Culture Minister Asma Khadar, said that the Jordanian diplomats were called home both for "security reasons" and for "consultation." But she said the government hoped that they could return to Iraq "very soon".
Jordan acted first, when Foreign Minister Hani al-Mulqi announced Sunday that his charge d'affaires in Baghdad had been recalled to Amman.
The Iraqi ambassador to Jordan was withdrawn later in the day.
The events capped a week of rising tensions that included a protest in which Shiite demonstrators raised the Iraqi flag over the Jordanian embassy in Baghdad.
Also last week, the Shiite clergy-backed United Iraqi Alliance claimed that Jordan was allowing militants to slip into Iraq.
Shiites began holding protests after the Iraqi government on March 14 condemned celebrations allegedly held by the family of a Jordanian man suspected of carrying out a February 28 attack that killed 125 people in Hillah, 100 kilometres (60 miles) south of Baghdad.
Nearly all the victims were Shiite police and army recruits.
The Jordanian daily 'Al-Ghad' reported that a man called Raed Mansour al-Banna carried out the attack, the single deadliest of the Iraqi insurgency.
The newspaper later issued a correction, however, saying it was not known where al-Banna carried out an assault.
Al-Banna's family has denied his involvement in the Hillah attack.
