Kurdish Peshmerga and Kurdish PKK (Kurdistan Worker's Party) Forces, together with American Special Operation Forces, battle ISIS South of Kirkuk in South-Kurdistan (Kurdistan Regional Government). Date: 18-01-2016 (January, 18th, 2016).
The PKK is arguably the most effective force battling ISIS. The YPG is the Syrian branch of the PKK in Rojava (West-Kurdistan, Northern-Syria).
In this video, we see Peshmerga, PKK and American forces. The fighters in traditional Kurdish military clothing are members of the PKK. The other soldiers in normal military uniforms are Peshmerga and American Special Operation Forces.

Up until a week ago, the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq was one of the most hotly contested areas in the country, with a mishmash of Kurds, Arabs, and Turkomans, who all had strong claims to the land. Now that the Iraqi army has fled and ISIS has been repelled, the Kurds are fully in control, and hope to integrate the city into the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).
Despite a large Kurdish presence in Kirkuk, this still might not be so easy. The Arab and Turkoman populations have long resisted Kurdish rule, and the large amount of oil nearby — which all of these groups want a fair share of — will only complicate matters further.
The Kurds, however, insist that control over the city is more a matter of dignity. Beginning in the 1960s and continuing throughout Saddam Hussein's rule, many Kurds in the area were forced off the land during an Arabization process, which sought to change the demographics of the city. Poor Arabs were offered land, houses, and money to move to the city and take over formerly Kurdish lands.
During the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, Kurdish forces and American soldiers took the city from the Baathist party. But the Kurdish forces mostly withdrew, and the city was not annexed to the KRG.
Since then Kirkuk has been under a sort of coalition rule, though it is still considered a disputed territory. Kurds have sought to implement Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, which would allow the people of Kirkuk to vote on whether or not the city should join the KRG or remain part of Iraq. But this vote has been delayed numerous times.
As recently as 2012, the Iraqi army and the Kurdish fighters, know as Peshmerga, engaged in a standoff that at times seemed like it could break out into conflict. For now though, the Kurds are firmly in control — though south of the city, sporadic attacks continue.
VICE News spoke with Falah Mustafa Bakir, the head of foreign relations for the KRG, who said that the Kurds have no intention of giving up their control of Kirkuk.

Kirkuk (also spelled Karkuk or Kerkuk, Arabic: كركوك karkūk, Kurdish: Kerkûk/کهرکووک, Syriac: ܟܪܟ ܣܠܘܟ karḵ sluḵ, Turkish: Kerkük) is a city in Iraq and the capital of Kirkuk Governorate.
It is located in the Iraqi governorate of Kirkuk, 236 kilometres (147 mi) north of the capital, Baghdad. Kirkuk city lies 83 km south of Arbil, 149 km southeast of Mosul, 97 km west of Sulaymaniyah, and 116 km northeast Tikrit
It stands on the site of the ancient Assyrian capital of Arrapha, which sits near the Khasa River on the ruins of a 5,000-year-old settlement (Kirkuk Citadel). Arrapha reached great importance under the Assyrians in the 10th and 11th centuries BC. Because of the strategic geographical location of the city, Kirkuk was the battle ground for three empires—the Neo Assyrian Empire, Babylonia, and Media—which controlled the city at various times.
Kirkuk lies in a wide zone with an ethnically mixed population, which has moreover experienced dramatic demographic changes in the course of the twentieth century. Kurds, Turkmen and Arabs lay conflicting claims to this zone, and all have their historical accounts and memories to buttress their claims.

Up until a week ago, the city of Kirkuk in northern Iraq was one of the most hotly contested areas in the country, with a mishmash of Kurds, Arabs, and Turkomans, who all had strong claims to the land. Now that the Iraqi army has fled and ISIS has been repelled, the Kurds are fully in control, and hope to integrate the city into the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG).
Despite a large Kurdish presence in Kirkuk, this still might not be so easy. The Arab and Turkoman populations have long resisted Kurdish rule, and the large amount of oil nearby — which all of these groups want a fair share of — will only complicate matters further.
The Kurds, however, insist that control over the city is more a matter of dignity. Beginning in the 1960s and continuing throughout Saddam Hussein's rule, many Kurds in the area were forced off the land during an Arabization process, which sought to change the demographics of the city. Poor Arabs were offered land, houses, and money to move to the city and take over formerly Kurdish lands.
During the 2003 US invasion of Iraq, Kurdish forces and American soldiers took the city from the Baathist party. But the Kurdish forces mostly withdrew, and the city was not annexed to the KRG.
Since then Kirkuk has been under a sort of coalition rule, though it is still considered a disputed territory. Kurds have sought to implement Article 140 of the Iraqi constitution, which would allow the people of Kirkuk to vote on whether or not the city should join the KRG or remain part of Iraq. But this vote has been delayed numerous times.
As recently as 2012, the Iraqi army and the Kurdish fighters, know as Peshmerga, engaged in a standoff that at times seemed like it could break out into conflict. For now though, the Kurds are firmly in control — though south of the city, sporadic attacks continue.
VICE News spoke with Falah Mustafa Bakir, the head of foreign relations for the KRG, who said that the Kurds have no intention of giving up their control of Kirkuk.

At around 5:30 am on Sunday, three ISIS militants who were Kurdish nationals arrived at a Peshmerga front line in Kirkuk to surrender. Two of them were from the township of Said Sadiq in the Sulaimani province and one from Erbil,” Brigadier General Kakamand Kak Rash, commander of the Peshmerga’s Emergency and Defense Forces in Kirkuk, told Rudaw.
“The surrendered militants escaped ISIS in Mosul and managed to reach Peshmerga front lines in Kirkuk, and they went back on joining and fighting for the extremist group," Kak Rash added.
The commander also told Rudaw that the militants would be treated according to the terror law and “for more investigations we handed them over to the Asayish (security forces) to know whether they have taken part in any battle and crime against the Peshmerga.”
In a separate incident, four ISIS militants came to a Peshmerga front line Saturday morning to surrender in the township of Gwer, another Peshmerga official told Rudaw Saturday.
“Four ISIS militants named Abdulrazaq Mohammed, Mahmoud Mohammed, Mohammed Saeed and Hassan Faraj fled their military units to the Peshmerga front line to surrender,” Captain Abdulla Framarz, a Peshmerga commander on the Gwer front line, told Rudaw.
According to Framarz, investigations would soon take place with the surrendered militants and later “we will send their cases to the court and the Peshmerga ministry.”
Speaking to Rudaw, one of the ISIS militants said, “We fled for two reasons, fearing death and starvation.” The ISIS militant told Rudaw they had fought for ISIS since June 2014 and now “there is no trust within the organization [ISIS], if they suspect a militant they will kill him right away.”

Kalar, is the administrative center of Garmyan district. It lies 140 Km southeast of Sulaimani prefecture and 30 Km from the Iranian border. Kalar consists of 27 quarters of a population of about 250,000 residents. Kalar is located on a large plain area embracing many historical sites related to different periods; BC, AD, and Islamic periods. Shirwana Citadel, Pasha Citadel and Christian Canal are examples of AD historical sites. In winter, temperatures may reach 2˚C.

• The Region is geographically diverse, from hot and dry plains to cooler mountainous areas with natural springs and snowfall in the winter.
• Foreign visitors are warmly welcomed. Among the growing number of visitors are international media and business people as well as those returning from the Kurdish diaspora.
• The capital and the seat of the Kurdistan Regional Government is Erbil, a city known in Kurdish as Hawler. The Citadel in Erbil is considered the world’s oldest continuously inhabited settlement. The next largest cities are Slemani and Duhok. Please note that Slemani is the KRG’s official English spelling, but it can also be found with other spellings such as Sulaimani, Suleimani, Sulaimaniyah, and Suleimaniah.
• The Kurdistan Regional Government exercises executive power according to the Kurdistan Region’s laws as enacted by the democratically elected Kurdistan Parliament. Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani leads the current government.
• Iraq’s Constitution recognizes the Kurdistan Regional Government and the Kurdistan Parliament as the region’s formal institutions and the Peshmerga forces as the Region’s legitimate security guard.
• The current coalition government consists of several political parties that reflect the diversity of the Region’s population, which includes Chaldeans, Assyrians, Syriacs, Turkmen, Yazidis, Arabs and Kurds living together in harmony.
• More than 65% of destroyed villages have been rebuilt since being razed during the Anfal campaign perpetrated by Saddam Hussein’s regime in the 1980s.
• The Kurdish language is of Indo-European origin and is among the family of Iranian languages, such as Persian and Pashto, and is distinct from Arabic. The two main dialects are Sorani and Kurmanji.
• The Kurdistan Region has eleven public universities and several licensed private universities. Some of them use English as the main language of teaching and examination, most notably the University of Kurdistan Hawler (UKH) and the American University of Iraq – Sulaimani (AUIS).
• A new, liberal foreign investment law was ratified in June 2006, providing incentives for foreign investors such as the possibility of owning land, up to ten-year tax holidays, and easy repatriation of profits.
• To rapidly benefit from its oil and gas resources, the KRG has signed dozens of production sharing contracts with companies from several countries.

And then the country is beautiful, food is good, travelling is easy, lots of singing and dancing, and lots of adventurous people ready for trekking and camping - all I need for a perfect trip!

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.
Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.
In order to fulfill this "calling" in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)
Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. STORYLINE:
Nathan Road is normally a busy tourist shopping area where fancy designer shops compete with electronics stores and cheap novelty items for the travellers' money.
But with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS affecting Hong Kong and many foreign governments warning against travel there, the shoppers are hard to find.
Tourist arrivals dropped 30% in the last week of March, and have been steadily plunging as the health scare continues.
Worst hit could be the small businessmen who don't have as much to fall back on as big merchants.

STORYLINE:
Nathan Road is normally a busy tourist shopping area where fancy designer shops compete with electronics stores and cheap novelty items for the travellers' money.
But with the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome or SARS affecting Hong Kong and many foreign governments warning against travel there, the shoppers are hard to find.
Tourist arrivals dropped 30% in the last week of March, and have been steadily plunging as the health scare continues.
Worst hit could be the small businessmen who don't have as much to fall back on as big merchants.

Tensions between Baghdad and Arbil intensified after Kurdish Peshmerga forces moved into the Bai Hassan and Kirkuk oilfields in Northern Iraq. The two sites are coveted by the Kurdish region government due to their proximity to Arbil's independent oil pipeline in Khurmala. Baghdad has slammed the takeover of Bai Hassan and Kirkuk oilfields by the Kurdish forces as "a threat to national unity". Meanwhile Kurdistan's Ministry of Natural Resources claimed that the Kurdish troops advances in the North were meant to quote: "Secure the oilfields" after "learning of orders by Baghdad's Oil Ministry to sabotage mutually-agreed infrastructure".

Would a nation have passed an emigration bill (May 27th, 1915) to secure the travel of its citizens, if it had intended to annihilate some ethnic groups. Besides, the Armenia originated people have been living in Istanbul for centuries, today their number is estimated around 25,000. If a genocide had been implemented, then how could these people have lived in Istanbul untouched? All the mass annihilations leave mass graves behind and none of them is revealed so far because there isn't any..
As Turkey we have opened our archieves and expect the same behaviour from Armenia. We should let the historians speak but not the politicians. From now on, as Turks, we give up our silence and start rising our voice to finish this unfair story.
