Apparently nothing would soothe this octopus except the open seas. Inky, the octopus slipped right out of the aquarium and escaped to freedom in the ocean without even cover his tracks. Staff at New Zealand's National Aquarium noticed Inky missing but they found his suction cup tracks showing his route. He slipped through a small gap in the top of his home, traveled across a wet floor and squeezed his way into a 6-inch drain pipe, leading him back to the ocean. Inky joined the aquarium after he was rescued from a cray pot back in 2014.

This full documentary goes in search of Enteroctopus, a genus of generally temperate octopus. Members of the genus Enteroctopus are characterized by their large size and are often known as the giant octopuses. The member of this genus that best embodies the common name "giant octopus" is Enteroctopus dofleini, which holds the record of being the world's largest octopus based on direct measurements of a 71-kg (156.5-lb) individual weighed live.
Enteroctopus dofleini, also known as the giant Pacific octopus (GPO) or North Pacific giant octopus, is a large marine cephalopod belonging to the phylum Mollusca, and genus Enteroctopus. Its spatial distribution includes the coastal North Pacific, along California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Russia, northern Japan and Korea. It can be found from the intertidal zone down to depths of 2,000 m (6,600 ft), and is best adapted to cold, oxygen-rich water. It is arguably the largest octopus species, based on a scientific record of a 71 kg (156 lb) individual weighed live. The alternative contender is the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) based on a 61 kg (134 lb) carcass estimated to have a live mass of 75 kg (165 lb). However, a number of questionable size records would suggest E. dofleini is the largest of all octopus species by a considerable margin.

NAPIER, NEW ZEALAND — An octopus residing at the National Aquarium of New Zealand made a daring escape from its tank to the Pacific Ocean.
After saying goodbye to his fellow octopus tankmate, Inky the Octopus decided to go on a journey of solitude.
He slipped through a tiny gap left open by maintenance workers at the top of the tank and travelled three to four metres across the aquarium floor, leaving behind a trail of suction cup prints.
Sensing freedom from a small drainpipe, Inky squeezed his body and legs into it .and crawled 50 metres through the pipeline until he reached the ocean off Hawke’s Bay.
“Octopuses are famous escape artists. But Inky really tested the waters here. I don’t think he was unhappy with us, or lonely, as octopus are solitary creatures. But he is such a curious boy. He would want to know what’s happening on the outside. That’s just his personality,” Rob Yarrell, national manager of the National Aquarium of New Zealand told the Guardian.
Staff members at the aquarium are closely watching Inky’s tankmate, the second octopus in residence since the escape.

The octopus (
/ˈɒktəpʊs/; traditionally, plural: octopuses, see below) is a cephalopod mollusc of the order Octopoda. Octopuses have two eyes and four pairs of arms, and like other cephalopods they are bilaterally symmetric. An octopus has a hard beak, with its mouth at the center point of the arms. Octopuses have no internal or external skeleton (although some species have a vestigial remnant of a shell inside their mantle), allowing them to squeeze through tight places. Octopuses are among the most intelligent and behaviorally flexible of all invertebrates.
The octopus inhabits many diverse regions of the ocean, including coral reefs, pelagic waters, and the ocean floor. They have numerous strategies for defending themselves against predators, including the expulsion of ink, the use of camouflage and deimatic displays, their ability to jet quickly through the water, and their ability to hide. An octopus trails its eight arms behind it as it swims. All octopuses are venomous, but only one group, the blue-ringed octopuses, is known to be deadly to humans.

While exploring the deep sea northeast of Hawaii’s Necker Island with a remotely operated vehicle, scientists aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer were surprised to encounter what may be a never-before-seen octopus. Though the February 27 discovery was made at a depth of 4,290 meters (14,075 feet), the octopus belongs to a group of octopods that have not previously been observed at depths greater than 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). This octopus lacks pigment cells typical of most cephalopods, which gives it a ghostlike appearance. Sneaky Octopus Slips Out of Aquarium Tank, Travels Down Drain Pipe To Sea
Apparently nothing would soothe this octopus except the open seas. Inky, the octopus slipped right out of the aquarium and escaped to freedom in the ocean without even cover his tracks. Staff at New Zealand's National Aquarium noticed Inky missing but they found his suction cup tracks showing his route. He slipped through a small gap in the top of his home, traveled across a wet floor and squeezed his way into a 6-inch drain pipe, leading him back to the ocean. Inky joined the aquarium after he was rescued from a cray pot back in 2014. -

A popular octopus has pulled off a great escape from the National Aquarium. Inky the common octopus took advantage of his tank's lid being left slightly ajar three months ago and fled to the Pacific Ocean. The manager of the Napier aquarium, Rob Yarrall, says Inky's getaway through a small pipe was no mean feat. -

NAPIER, NEW ZEALAND — An octopus residing at the National Aquarium of New Zealand made a daring escape from its tank to the Pacific Ocean. After saying goodbye to his fellow octopus tankmate, Inky the Octopus decided to go on a journey of solitude. He slipped through a tiny gap left open by maintenance workers at the top of the tank and travelled three to four metres across the aquarium floor, leaving behind a trail of suction cup prints. Sensing freedom from a small drainpipe, Inky squeezed his body and legs into it .and crawled 50 metres through the pipeline until he reached the ocean off Hawke’s Bay. “Octopuses are famous escape artists. Ghostlike Octopus Found Lurking Deep Below the Sea
While exploring the deep sea northeast of Hawaii’s Necker Island with a remotely operated vehicle, scientists aboard the NOAA ship Okeanos Explorer were surprised to encounter what may be a never-before-seen octopus. Though the February 27 discovery was made at a depth of 4,290 meters (14,075 feet), the octopus belongs to a group of octopods that have not previously been observed at depths greater than 4,000 meters (13,123 feet). This octopus lacks pigment cells typical of most cephalopods, which gives it a ghostlike appearance. Octopus Caught While Kayak Fishing

I was able to get some pretty sweet underwater shots while it was next to his kayak. The octopus was kept and enjoyed. It swallowed a pretty large hook so its survival was unlikely. I used a Kodak Playsport (Zx3) to film this. Further info for the people commenting: For the record, I didn't kill it, or eat it. I just filmed it. Also, it was not wasted. Its sacrifice was well respected among those that did eat it. I'm not a biologist of any kind, but a simple search on the internet shows that octopuses are not a rare animal. In fact, there is evidence that suggests they are overpopulated in their range. They have a life-span of 3 to 5 years so I'm guessing because of ... -

Apparently nothing would soothe this octopus except the open seas. Inky, the octopus slipped right out of the aquarium and escaped to freedom in the ocean without even cover his tracks. Staff at New Zealand's National Aquarium noticed Inky missing but they found his suction cup tracks showing his route. He slipped through a small gap in the top of his home, traveled across a wet floor and squeezed his way into a 6-inch drain pipe, leading him back to the ocean. Inky joined the aquarium after he was rescued from a cray pot back in 2014.

Enteroctopus dofleini, also known as the giant Pacific octopus (GPO) or North Pacific giant octopus, is a large marine cephalopod belonging to the phylum Mollusca, and genus Enteroctopus. Its spatial distribution includes the coastal North Pacific, along California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, Alaska, Russia, northern Japan and Korea. It can be found from the intertidal zone down to depths of 2,000 m (6,600 ft), and is best adapted to cold, oxygen-rich water. It is arguably the largest octopus species, based on a scientific record of a 71 kg (156 lb) individual weighed live. The alternative contender is the seven-arm octopus (Haliphron atlanticus) based on a 61 kg (134 lb) carcass estimated to have a live mass of 75 kg (165 lb). However, a number of questionable size records would suggest E. dofleini is the largest of all octopus species by a considerable margin.

NAPIER, NEW ZEALAND — An octopus residing at the National Aquarium of New Zealand made a daring escape from its tank to the Pacific Ocean.
After saying goodbye to his fellow octopus tankmate, Inky the Octopus decided to go on a journey of solitude.
He slipped through a tiny gap left open by maintenance workers at the top of the tank and travelled three to four metres across the aquarium floor, leaving behind a trail of suction cup prints.
Sensing freedom from a small drainpipe, Inky squeezed his body and legs into it .and crawled 50 metres through the pipeline until he reached the ocean off Hawke’s Bay.
“Octopuses are famous escape artists. But Inky really tested the waters here. I don’t think he was unhappy with us, or lonely, as octopus are solitary creatures. But he is such a curious boy. He would want to know what’s happening on the outside. That’s just his personality,” Rob Yarrell, national manager of the National Aquarium of New Zealand told the Guardian.
Staff members at the aquarium are closely watching Inky’s tankmate, the second octopus in residence since the escape.

Bryce hooked into a octopus which he originally thought was a snag. I was able to get some pretty sweet underwater shots while it was next to his kayak. The octopus was kept and enjoyed. It swallowed a pretty large hook so its survival was unlikely. I used a Kodak Playsport (Zx3) to film this.

For the record, I didn't kill it, or eat it. I just filmed it. Also, it was not wasted. Its sacrifice was well respected among those that did eat it. I'm not a biologist of any kind, but a simple search on the internet shows that octopuses are not a rare animal. In fact, there is evidence that suggests they are overpopulated in their range. They have a life-span of 3 to 5 years so I'm guessing because of its size that this one was nearing the end of that span. So, I would rather it be killed quickly and not wasted than it be set free to suffer and starve for the last year or so of its life with a six inch hook in its mouth.

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Inky the octopus waited until it was dark and the staff had gone home from the National Aquarium of New Zealand before making his move ... Yarrall said that since they have no bones, octopuses can squeeze through almost any hole that's larger than their beaks, so the drain hole, 15 centimeters (6 inches) wide, was no great challenge ...
