The Re 420, originally (and still widely called) Re
4/4 II, series are the most common electric locomotives of the
Swiss Federal Railways. They are used for passenger services throughout
Switzerland alone or in pairs.
The Re 420 locomotives were produced over a period of 21 years, from 1964 to
1985.
30 locomotives of the passenger division (11201–11230) will be rebuilt for peak hour services with double deck cars in
S-Bahn Zürich, starting in
2011. A consist will be built up by
6 (7 consists) or 10 (6 consists) double deckers plus one locomotive at each end.
The rebuilding project was competed under the name "LION", the LION acronym standing for:-
L - Lifting - External repainting, interior refurbishment including new seat upholstery and new floor coatings
I -
Integration - Integrating additional coaches
O - Optimierung/optimisation - Upgrading onboard facilities
N - Neugestaltung/New arrangement - New rakes of stock to be used with the refurbished locomotives

The
Zürich S-Bahn (
German: S-Bahn Zürich) system is a network of rail lines that has been incrementally expanded to cover the
ZVV area, which comprises the entire canton of
Zürich and portions of neighboring cantons (Aargau, Schaffhausen,
Schwyz, Thurgau and
St. Gallen), with a few lines extending into
Germany. The network is one of many commuter rail operations in
German speaking countries to be described as an S-Bahn.
The entire ZVV S-Bahn network went into operation in May
1990, although many of the lines were already in operation.
Unusual among rapid transit services, the Zürich S-Bahn provides first class commuter travel; about one-fifth of seats on each train are first class.

Altstetten is a quarter in district 9 of the city of Zürich in Switzerland. It was formerly a municipality in its own right, but was incorporated into Zürich in 1934.
Altstetten railway station is a nodal
point where the Zürich S-Bahn,
Zürich trams,
Zürich trolleybuses and
Zürich buses all connect.
The station is served by S-Bahn lines S3, S9,
S12 and
S15, providing frequent services to
Zürich Hauptbahnhof with a ride time only a few minutes.
Future plans involve the construction of the Limmattalbahn, a new metre gauge light rail line that will link Altstetten station with communities further west in the valley of the Limmat, along a route similar to that of the long abandoned Limmattal-Strassenbahn. It is planned that the line will be partially opened by
2020 and will connect to the city tram system at Altstetten station, with the possibility of extending city tram service over the Limmattalbahn as far as
Schlieren.
