I Got A Horse Al Simmons
When I was young my favourite TV show was Horse Opera. Every Saturday morning I would watch my cowboy heroes save the day then I would jump on my bicycle and ride around the neighbourhood pretending my bike was my horse. Many years later I became obsessed with really turning my bike into a horse. I found an old bike in a friend's bike shop, and had him re-spoke the wheels with the hubs off centre - so that when I peddled the bike went up and down. I then added another gear wheel and chain that caused drum sticks to strike two coconuts to make the clip-clop sound. I then added a puppet horse-head with blinking eyes and a mouth that chomped at the bit and a backside with a twirling tail. A pony saddle and reigns finished it off. I then wrote a song to go along with the whole idea. The music video of this song, staring Ol' Spoke and I, is now featured on my "I Collect Rocks" DVD. alsimmons.com

Al Simmons, as The Human Jukebox, on CBC's "Summer Festival," a national TV series from various cities across Canada. This episode was recorded in Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park in May of 1980 with host Arvel Gray.
In 1977 Bart Bourne, an eccentric Winnipeg genius saw Grimes Poznikov playing trumpet as San Francisco's Automatic Human Jukebox. This inspired him to build a wooden performance box for his friend Al Simmons who was "between gigs" (unemployed). Bart convinced Al to stand in it at Winnipeg's Old Market Square. Al installed noisemakers and props and became: "The Amazing, Perplexing, Sensational, Neat: Human Juke Box" (Two-bits a laugh.) Al redesigned the JukeBox using corrugated plastic to make touring easier. For 6 years he entertained audiences at festivals across North America, including The Vancouver International Children's Festival, Hamilton's Festival of Friends, Pete Seeger's Hudson River Revival and the Winnipeg, Vancouver, Mariposa, Thunder Bay, Edmonton, Faro Yukon, and Bear Mountain NY Folk Festivals. Al is still a baggy-pants vaudevillian but he now thinks "outside the box."

Aloysius Harry Simmons (May 22, 1902 – May 26, 1956), born Aloisius Szymanski, was an American baseball player. He played for two decades in the major leagues as an outfielder, and had his best years as a member of Connie Mack's Philadelphia Athletics during the 1930s. Simmons was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1953.
A "bucketfoot" hitter (his nickname was "Bucketfoot Al") who strode toward third base when hitting, Simmons starred as an outfielder for the Philadelphia Athletics during their heyday in the early 1930s, then went on to play for the Chicago White Sox, Detroit Tigers, Washington Senators, Boston Braves, Cincinnati Reds, and Boston Red Sox.
Simmons hit 307 career home runs, also compiling more hits than any right-handed batter in American League history until surpassed by Al Kaline. A deadly clutch hitter and a favorite of manager Connie Mack, Simmons won batting titles in 1930 and 1931 to help the A's to consecutive pennants. He recorded a .300 batting average and 100 or more runs batted in (RBI) in his first eleven major league seasons. Simmons' accumulated 2,000 hits in 1,390 games, which remains the shortest number of games needed to attain that mark in major league history.

I Got A Horse Al Simmons When I was young my favourite TV show was Horse Opera. Every Saturday morning I would watch my cowboy heroes save the day then I would jump on my bicycle and ride around the neighbourhood pretending my bike was my horse. Many years later I became obsessed with really turning my bike into a horse. I found an old bike in a friend's bike shop, and had him re-spoke the wheels with the hubs off centre - so that when I peddled the bike went up and down. I then added another gear wheel and chain that caused drum sticks to strike two coconuts to make the clip-clop sound. I then added a puppet horse-head with blinking eyes and a mouth that chomped at the bit and a backside with a twirling tail. A pony saddle and reigns finished it off. Al Simmons, as The Human Jukebox, on CBC's "Summer Festival," a national TV series from various cities across Canada. This episode was recorded in Winnipeg's Assiniboine Park in May of 1980 with host Arvel Gray. In 1977 Bart Bourne, an eccentric Winnipeg genius saw Grimes Poznikov playing trumpet as San Francisco's Automatic Human Jukebox. This inspired him to build a wooden performance box for his friend Al Simmons who was "between gigs" (unemployed). Bart convinced Al to stand in it at Winnipeg's Old Market Square. Al installed noisemakers and props and became: "The Amazing, Perplexing, Sensational, Neat: Human Juke Box" (Two-bits a laugh.) Al installed noisemakers and props and became: "The Amazing, Perplexing, Sensational, Neat: Human Juke Box" (Two-bits a laugh.) Al redesigned the JukeBox using corrugated plastic to make touring easier. For 6 years he entertained audiences at festivals across North America, including The Vancouver International Children's Festival, Hamilton's Festival of Friends, Pete Seeger's Hudson River Revival and the Winnipeg, Vancouver, Mariposa, Thunder Bay, Edmonton, Faro Yukon, and Bear Mountain NY Folk Festivals. Al is still a baggy-pants vaudevillian but he now thinks "outside the box."
