Inca

The Inca Empire, or Inka Empire (Quechua: Tawantinsuyu), was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The administrative, political and military center of the empire was located in Cusco in modern-day Peru. The Inca civilization arose from the highlands of Peru sometime in the early 13th century.

From 1438 to 1533, the Incas used a variety of methods, from conquest to peaceful assimilation, to incorporate a large portion of western South America, centered on the Andean mountain ranges, including, besides Peru, large parts of modern Ecuador, western and south central Bolivia, northwest Argentina, north and central Chile, and southern Colombia into a state comparable to the historical empires of Eurasia.

The official language of the empire was Quechua, although hundreds of local languages and dialects of Quechua were spoken. The Inca referred to their empire as Tawantinsuyu which can be translated as The Four Regions or The Four United Provinces.

There were many local forms of worship, most of them concerning local sacred "Huacas", but the Inca leadership encouraged the worship of Inti—the sun god—and imposed its sovereignty above other cults such as that of Pachamama. The Incas considered their King, the Sapa Inca, to be the "child of the sun."

Jip: The weekend has landed. All that exists now is clubs, drugs, pubs and parties. I've got 48 hours off from the world, man. I'm gonna blow steam out my head like a screaming kettle, I'm gonna talk cod shit to strangers all night, I'm gonna lose the plot on the dancefloor. The free radicals inside me are freakin', man! Tonight I'm Jip Travolta, I'm Peter Popper, I'm going to never-never land with my chosen family, man. We're gonna get more spaced out than Neil Armstrong ever did, anything could happen tonight, you know? This could be the best night of my life. Jip: We wanna go somewhere else. We're not threatened by people anymore. All our insecurities have evaporated. We're in the clouds now. We're wide open. We're spacemen orbiting the earth. The world looks beautiful from here, man. We're nympholeptics, desiring for the unobtainable. We risk sanity for moments of temporary enlightenment. So many ideas. So little memory. The last thought killed by anticipation of the next. We embrace an overwhelming feeling of love. We flow in unison. We're together. I wish this was real. We want a universal level of togetherness, where we're comfortable with everyone. We're in rhythm. Part of a movement. A movement to escape. We wave goodbye. Ultimately, we just want to be happy. Heh, yeah, hang on, what the fuck was I just talking about?

A look at the Ancient Civilizations of the Inca and Maya Empires. Discover the gems of the 15th Century Incan empire, a domain which covered much of South America. The splendid cities of Curzo and Chairana and the grandeur of Machu Picchu captivated the imagination and, unfortunately, greed of the Spanish conquistadors. Lifelike virtual construction gives us a close look at the massive sacred grounds of the Temple of the Sun at Cuzco, religious and political capital of a world known to generations of European adventurers as El Dorado. Part starts at 26:33 and looks at the Mayan Empire. Between the 3rd and 10th centuries A.D., the Mayan civilization ruled much of Central America. Travel back to the magnificent Mayan cities of Uxmal, Tulum, Chichén Itza and the capital Palenque, with its breathtaking pyramid built by master mathematicians. Being that it is located on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, it is, to this day, one of the most picturesque places in the world. Ancient Civilizations offers a comparative analysis of the field, including both old world and new civilizations, and explores the connections between all civilizations around the earth. The volume provides a jargon-free introduction to ancient civilizations from the first civilizations, and the great powers in the Near East, to the first Aegean civilizations, the Mediterranean world in the first millennium, Imperial Rome, northeast Africa, divine kings in southeast Asia, and empires in East Asia, as well as early states in the Americas and Andean civilization. For those interested in ancient civilizations. Today’s civilizations owe an immense debt to the powerful empires and mighty cities of antiquity. Their inventions, techniques and concepts enabled the advancement of humankind and lay the foundation for life in the modern world. Explore Ancient History, including videos, pictures, and articles on cultures such as Ancient Egypt, Greece, Rome and more.

In 1911, Hiram Bingham, famed American explorer, stumbled across a remote Inca city atop a high peak in the Andes. The site was called Machu Picchu - perhaps the most famous ruin in the world. What was its purpose? Was it, like Bingham believed, a military fortress? Or did this glorious ruin have a secret purpose? From the mountains of Peru, Josh will follow in the footsteps of Hiram Bingham. He builds a log bridge across a raging river, examines the stonework at the site, and reviews ancient manuscripts to discover the "true' purpose of Machu Picchu. tags: Inca Empire (Location), Documentary (TV Genre), Lost Cities of the Inca, National Geographic Documentary, Top Documentary, top documentary films, documentary,DOCUMENTARIES,DOCUMENTARY,DOCUMENTARIES 2015,YOUTUBE DOCUMENTARIES,DOCUMENTARIES ONLINE,DOCUMENTARIES DISCOVERY CHANNEL,DOCUMENTARY FILMS,FREE ,DOCUMENTARIES,ONLINE DOCUMENTARIES,WATCH DOCUMENTARIES ONLINE,DOCUMENTARY MOVIES,WATCH DOCUMENTARIES DOCUMENTARY FILM,FREE ONLINE DOCUMENTARIES,DOCUMENTARY ONLINE,HBO DOCUMENTARIES,HISTORY DOCUMENTARIES TOP DOCUMENTARY FILMS,WAR DOCUMENTARIES,GREAT DOCUMENTARIES,TOP DOCUMENTARY,NATURE DOCUMENTARIES

In the first of a two-part series, Dr Jago Cooper reassesses the achievements of the Inca Empire. He begins in Peru, where evidence is still being uncovered that challenges preconceptions about its origins and significance. Venturing from the coast to the clouds, he reveals how the Inca transformed one of the most challenging landscapes in the world to ward off the worst effects of the climate, and created sophisticated systems of communication. He shows how one of many independent societies became a commanding empire - not through force, but by using subtle methods of persuasion.

▶ SUBSCRIBE! http://bit.ly/PlanetDoc Full Documentaries every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday! ▶ HISTORY DOCUMENTARIES | http://bit.ly/PlHistory We traveled to the Bolivian altiplano plateau for the first pre-Inca cultures. We crossed Lake Titicaca, walked through the arid Peruvian coast, we visited the oldest archaeological sites, witness rituals led by shamans and know the looters and grave robbers. Know everything that happened centuries before the Incas to become the lords of the Andes absorbing all previous cultures. 00:50 From the ruins of the former settlements of the Inca and Tiwanaku cultures, on lake Titicaca, the Cayahualla priests worship Tata Inti, the Sun God. The Tiwanaku culture appeared in about the fourth century AD, on the Bolivian plateau, just a few kilometres from the shores of Lake Titicaca. 04:13 On the islands of the Sun and Moon, we find numerous ruins of Tiwanaku origin, and which were later occupied by the Incas. The ancient mystical observatories are still used by the shaman in their ceremonies of invocation and meditation. 06:24 The majority of the coast of Peru is dry desert land. Nonetheless, this inhospitable land was the birth place of great civilisations, . this is the case of the Chimú culture who constructed irrigation channels, and created gardens in the desert. With their advanced techniques, they developed agricultural societies capable of supporting large numbers of inhabitants. The Chimú culture built cities like this one, Chanchán, perhaps the largest city in the world at the time, with around 100,000 inhabitants. 08:00 Still today, the fishermen along the coast of northern Peru use these boats, called “cattail horses”, to work the fishing grounds close to the shore. The cattail is a type of reed or bulrush which grows in the marshlands. Once it is cut and dried in the sun, it becomes tough and flexible, very resistant, and waterproof. At dawn, the fishermen set out to sea, expertly maintaining their balance as they ride the waves, using the most ancient of all surfing techniques. 11:02 The anthropomorphic face of the ‘Slitter of Men’s Throats’, at the Tomb, or ‘Huaca’ of the Moon, introduces us to the Moche culture, which flourished along these same coastal valleys, before the Chimú empire, from 200 BC to 700 AD. 15:22 The ‘San Pedro’ is a cactus which contains a powerful alkali with relaxant and hallucinatory properties mescaline, a mind-altering substance which induces a profound state of trance, also known as peyote. In the dark of night, and presided over by the shaman, rituals are held, at which they ingest the San Pedro. 21:34 The collection of over 16,000 skulls in the Archaeological museum in Lima makes it possible to study the pathology of these ancient cultures. These Nasca and Paraca skulls were subjected to a traumatic deformation, apparently simply for aesthetic reasons. A long, thin skull was a symbol of the upper class. 25:28 The discovery of the Tomb of the Lord of Sipan, a former president of Peru, was the most important archaeological discovery of America in the last decades. 30:00 These objects are made of gold, and come from the tomb of the Lord of Sipan. The police seized them from the grave robber Ernil Bernal, and they provided the clue for the archaelogist Walter Alva to discover this extraordinary Moche mausoleum. 30:32 The ‘Huaca Rajada’, the ‘Cracked Tomb’, is the burial complex of the Lord of Sipan. Excavations are still going on at this extraordinary find. 37:16 Every night, under cover of darkness, the robbers continue to find treasures, raiding the tombs of the Moche, Chimu, Chancay, Paracas, Nasca…The treasures they unearth are bought for pitiful sums by unscrupulous merchants, and sold on the black market. 41:00 We are leaving the coast and heading east, to discover the Chachapoya culture. We can see the ancient walls of their settlements along the cliffs and crags, totally inaccessible. Without a doubt, Kuelap is the most astonishing of all the Chachapoya cities. On the sacred mountain of La Petaca, there are over one hundred tombs in which they laid to rest their mummified dead. It is not known how they were able to construct them high up on the sheer rock face. The Chachapoya mummies are the product of a relatively sophisticated process. 49:21 And finally, the Incas arrived! Their Empire, the Tahuantinsuyo, extended from what is now Ecuador, to Argentina and Chile, absorbing all previous cultures. They became the masters of the Andes. They built astonishing cities, like the sacred Machupichu, abandoned since the arrival of the Spanish. A National Geographic documentary about the fascinating and mysterious pre-Columbian Inca lost city of Machu Picchu. Deep in the Andean mountains lays a mysterious ruin named Machu Picchu. For 400 years it sat abandoned on its misty cliff, the quintessential lost city in the jungle. Rediscovered in 1911, it contained no written records or carvings, nothing that could shed light on its history. For a century since, it has defied the endless scores of visitors and scientists who attempted to understand its purpose. Who were the mysterious people who built it and why did they build it here? Today an international team of archeologists, engineers and scientists are finally piecing together the clues. Together they are discovering astonishing new burials, revealing the intricacies of its ingenious engineering and finally decoding the secrets of Machu Picchu.

The knotted-string recording device known as the khipu ("knot") was the principal device used for the storage of information by state agents and administrative officials in the Inka Empire of Pre-Columbian South America. This presentation examines the role of khipu record keeping in a variety of contexts relating to the building of state facilities in the empire—from roads to store houses to administrative centers. It is argued that the knotted string hierarchical arrangement of the khipu was important to the Inka not only as an instrument for record keeping but also as a structur...

In Part 5 of Engineering the Inka Empire: A Symposium on Sustainability and Ancient Technologies, Gary Urton presents Engineering a World with Strings Attached: The Place of the Khipu in Building the Inka Empire. It is argued that the knotted string hierarchical arrangement of the khipu was important to the Inka not only as an instrument for record keeping but also as a structural paradigm for building the empire. Gary Urton is the Dumbarton Oaks Professor of Pre-Columbian Studies and Chairman of the Department of Anthropology at Harvard University. His research focuses on a variety of topics in pre-Columbian and early colonial Andean intellectual history, drawing on materials and methods in archaeology, ethnohistory, and ethnology. He is the author of many articles and editor of several volumes on Andean/Quechua cultures and Inka civilization. His books include: The History of a Myth (1990), The Social Life of Numbers (1997), Inca Myths (1999), and Signs of the Inka Khipu (2003). A MacArthur Fellow (2001--2005), he is Founder/Director of the Harvard Khipu Database Project. This symposium was webcast on November 14, 2013 from the Rasmuson Theater at the National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C.

The Inca Empire ★ Documentary 2015

The Inca Empire, also known as the Inka Empire or Incan Empire, was the largest empire in pre-Columbian America. The administrative, political, and military center of the empire was located in Cusco in modern-day Peru. The Inca civilization arose from the highlands of Peru sometime in the early 13th century, and the last Inca stronghold was conquered by the Spanish in 1572. From 1438 to 1533, the Incas used a variety of methods, from conquest to peaceful assimilation, to incorporate a large portion of western South America, centered on the Andean mountain ranges, including, besides Peru, large parts of modern Ecuador, western and south central Bolivia, northwest Argentina, north and central Chile, and a small part of southern Colombia into a state comparable to the historical empires of Eurasia. The official language of the empire was Quechua, although hundreds of local languages and dialects of Quechua were spoken. Many local forms of worship persisted in the empire, most of them concerning local sacred Huacas, but the Inca leadership encouraged the worship of Inti—their sun god—and imposed its sovereignty above other cults such as that of Pachamama.[4] The Incas considered their king, the Sapa Inca, to be the "son of the sun
