Rinca, also known as Rincah and Rindja, is a small island near Komodo island, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia within the West Manggarai Regency. The island is famous for komodo dragons, giant lizards that can measure up to 3 metres (9.8 ft) long. Rinca is also populated with many other species such as wild pigs, buffalos and many birds.
Being less known and less visited than Komodo it is an excellent place to see the komodo dragon in its natural environment with fewer people to disturb them. Day trips can be arranged from Labuan Bajo on Flores by small boat at the park headquarters.
The island's area is 198 square kilometres (76 sq mi).
Living conditions for local people on the island are often difficult. Education facilities, for example, are quite limited for children. Some non-government organisations help with the provision of books for children on Rinca.
Rinca and Komodo bracket a north-south passage between the Indian Ocean and the Flores Sea. Due to the large bodies of water and narrow gap, the waters between Rinca and Komodo are subject to whirlpools and currents in excess of 10 knots.

Im Osten Indonesiens liegen zwischen Flores und Sumbawa unzählige kleine Inseln vulkanischen Ursprungs - die kleinen Sunda- Inseln. Unser erstes Ziel ist die Insel Flores. Wir, eine Gruppe von Filmbegeisterten Weltenbummlern, wollen auf die Insel Rinca zu den legendären Urzeitechsen. Drei Tage Stress pur, um für einige Stunden Warane - die größten Echsen der Welt - zu sehen und natürlich zu filmen. Der Komodo-Airport „Bandar Udara liegt auf der Insel Flores nahe dem kleinen Fischerhafen von Labuan Bajo. Wenn die Fluggesellschaft genügend Treibstoff hat, fliegt sie mehrmals in der Woche mit zwei Kleinflugzeugen Versorgungsgüter aus Bali auf die Insel. Und manchmal auch ein paar Traveller, so wie wir. Wir, eine Gruppe von Filmbegeisterten Weltenbummlern, wollen auf die Insel Rinca zu den legendären Urzeitechsen. Drei Tage Stress pur, um für einige Stunden Warane - die größten Echsen der Welt - zu sehen und natürlich zu filmen.
Der Komodo-Airport „Bandar Udara liegt auf der Insel Flores nahe dem kleinen Fischerhafen von Labuan Bajo. Wenn die Fluggesellschaft genügend Treibstoff hat, fliegt sie mehrmals in der Woche mit zwei Kleinflugzeugen Versorgungsgüter aus Bali auf die Insel. Und manchmal auch ein paar Traveller, so wie wir.
Nach einer Übernachtung machen wir uns am frühen Morgen auf, um mit einem alten Fischerboot auf die Insel Rinca überzusetzen.
Zu diesem Zeitpunkt wissen wir nicht, was uns erwartet außer, dass diese Insel noch Natur pur und urwüchsig ist, also nicht wie die Insel Komodo touristisch erschlossen.

Most were hanging around the kitchen, drawn by the smell of blood but Rinca Island dragons are not fed by the staff. The Komodo dragon's long forked tongue gives it a keen sense of smell. They can smell prey from around 8km/5 miles away in a favorable wind. It's difficult to spot dragons during rainy season because the foliage is so high. Most were hanging around the kitchen, drawn by the smell of blood but Rinca Island dragons are not fed by the staff. The Komodo dragon's long forked tongue gives it a keen sense of smell. They can smell prey from around 8km/5 miles away in a favorable wind.
It's difficult to spot dragons during rainy season because the foliage is so high. But...one "greeter" lurked on the walk back to the boat and then the guide spotted another, perfectly concealed in the brush next to the trail.

The komodo will track the dying animal by use of its huge forked tongue, seen graphically in these videos, with which it is able to taste the air with great degrees of sensitivity and is able to smell the odour given off by a wounded animal. They are capable of very quick turns of speed and being up so close to one in the wild was at times a frightening experience and you must at all times be wary. Any bite would be fatal. Last of the living dinosaurs. The komodo dragon is the world's largest lizard, reaching lengths of up to 3 metres (10 feet), with typical adult size being 2 metres. They are believed to be the last and closest remaining living relic of the dinosaurs left alive today. This specimen was filmed walking through the forests on Rinca island, which is a 2.5 hour boat ride off the coast of Flores island, Indonesia. The komodo dragon is the fiercest of all lizards and will even resort to cannibalism. They will typically hunt deer and buffalo and will track a wounded animal for 3 weeks before finally eating it. Their saliva contains so many bacteria that quickly multiply and ensure that the victim, once bitten, cannot survive and will eventually succumb to blood poisoning. The komodo will track the dying animal by use of its huge forked tongue, seen graphically in these videos, with which it is able to taste the air with great degrees of sensitivity and is able to smell the odour given off by a wounded animal. They are capable of very quick turns of speed and being up so close to one in the wild was at times a frightening experience and you must at all times be wary. Any bite would be fatal. Komodo National Park lies in the Wallacea Region of Indonesia, identified by WWF and Conservation International as a global conservation priority area, and is located in the center of the Indonesian archipelago, between the islands of Sumbawa and Flores.
Komodo National Park includes three major islands: Komodo, Rinca and Padar, as well as numerous smaller islands creating a total surface area (marine and land) of more than 1,800 km2. As well as being home to the Komodo Dragon, also known as the Komodo Monitor, or Ora (to Indonesians), the park provides refuge for many other notable terrestrial species. Moreover, the Park includes one of the richest marine environments.

The main reasons to travel to Komodo National Park are the Komodo Dragons, the superb beaches and the unspoilt corals.
Keep in mind that there are also wild pigs, monkeys and horses on Pulau Rinca, one of the two largest islands in the park.
If you return by sea at night, you can also see legions of flying foxes (fruit bats whose wing span may exceed 4 feet) flying in the twilight sky.
At night on the Flores Sea, you also have a magnificent view of the stars.
