LEADIN:
Kandahar Province in the south of Afghanistan is a stronghold of the Taliban and one of the most dangerous locations for coalition forces.
In one military operation last year the US controversially called in air strikes to destroy a village in the region known to be a Taliban hideout.
Now, reconstruction is underway to win back the hearts and minds of villagers who lost their homes.
STORYLINE:
A helicopter ride over Arghandab River Valley in Kandahar is the best way to survey this fertile terrain.
The land supports extensive cultivation - in particular pomegranate orchards - but historically it has also provided support and cover for the Taliban.
In a major offensive here to regain control of the valley last October (2010) the commander of Combined Joint Task Force 1-320th called in air strikes to level the booby-trapped village of Tarok Kolache.
It was a last resort after spending 100 days fighting on the ground in an area littered with bombs.
Seven men were killed and dozens wounded in orchards and towns the Taliban had laced with improvised devices. According to the commander, U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel David Flynn, in one small area his men encountered about 200 bombs, or one every 40 yards or so.

So we used that knowledge to attack from the north and to attack quickly and to attack hard so it would disorganise and disrupt his command and control and prevent him from conducting any type of organised attack against us once we got going. It worked. The plan actually in execution exceeded our wildest expectations. Normally a plan falls apart the minute you kick it off, in this case it went better than what we expected as planners."

STORYLINE
US military officials have presented more details of their recent battle against insurgents in Fallujah, claiming the discovery of numerous makeshift torture chambers.
They said the campaign had been a success and that it had "exceeded their wildest expectations".
Lieutenant-Colonel David Wilson said the US military were now concentrating on rooting out small pockets of resistance fighters still left in the city.
Major Jim West of US Military Intelligence, claimed the insurgents had used fear to intimidate the local population. To press home their intimidation, West surmised that the screams of their torture victims would be heard in the streets of Fallujah.
He briefed the press on Sunday on the discovery of approximately 20 "atrocity sites" that had been uncovered by US forces searching the war-torn city for the last fighters.
The inference given was that knives and hoods found in hidden basements were torturer's paraphernalia.
No independent verification of the claims has so far been forthcoming.
US and Iraqi government forces launched the offensive against Fallujah, hoping to destroy resistance in the insurgents' strongest centre ahead of elections imposed in January.
Many militants are believed to have fled the city to continue attacks elsewhere.

For the first time since late 2009, Obama's approval rating has gone up by 8%.
A new Public Policy Polling survey says 53% of Americans approve of Obama's performance as president, which is 8% more than in December of 2010.
The election headquarters will be in Obama's hometown of Chicago.
Obama will have to file paperwork with the Federal Election Commission in a couple of months to formally declare himself a candidate.
Prior to the recent poll, Obama's approval percentage ratings had been stuck in the low to mid 40's for months.
