On this day
In 1757 British troops under Robert Clive defeated the Nawab of Bengal at the Battle of Plassey.
In 1972 Edward Heath’s chancellor of the exchequer, Anthony Barber, announced that he would float the pound.
In 1985 an Air India jet disintegrated in mid-air off the coast of Ireland, killing all 329 people on board.
In 1992 the New York crime boss John Gotti was sentenced to life imprisonment after his conviction for racketeering and murder.
Nature notes
Train travellers looking out of the window may think that they are seeing a fall of half-melted snow on the tops of the bramble bushes they are passing. The rather flat tops of the bushes are now covered with new flowers, which are a watery white that creates the illusion, especially when the train is going fast. Other new flowers are helping to give the countryside a white look. The elder bushes, which are so widespread both in country and town, have rosettes of creamy white flowers, some as large as dinner plates. The white trumpets of larger bindweed are clambering everywhere over hedges and other plants. This bindweed curls round plants in an anticlockwise direction. Many colourful June flowers are also to be seen, though most of them are smaller, such as herb robert, with its pink flowers and pinkish leaves, and wood avens or herb bennet, which has bright yellow stars. Grander than these is mallow, which has big purplish-pink flowers and deep-cut leaves and grows tall on dusty roadsides.
