L'aéroport international Montréal-Mirabel (code AITA : YMX • code OACI : CYMX) est situé à Mirabel, dans la banlieue de Montréal au Québec.
Issu d'un plan de développement aéroportuaire de la région de Montréal par le gouvernement fédéral canadien de la fin des années 1960, il a été victime de la crise pétrolière des années 1970 et de la concurrence de l'aéroport de Toronto. Originalement destiné à devenir le principal aéroport de la région, considéré souvent aujourd'hui comme un éléphant blanc, il n'était plus en 2008 qu'au 42e rang d'activité des aéroports canadiens, n'étant plus utilisé que pour le fret aérien. Il est le seul aéroport canadien ne recevant pas de passagers faisant partie du réseau national des aéroports.
Aujourd'hui, les installations de Bombardier aéronautique (CRJ 700 et 900, CSeries) de même que plusieurs sociétés liées à la construction ou l'entretien d'avions (L3 Comm, Mecachrome, TurboMeca) se trouvent sur le site même de l'aéroport international Montréal-Mirabel.
De plus, l'aéroport se trouve à proximité des installations de Bell Helicopter Textron, de CAE ainsi que celles de Messier-Dowty, une société de renommée mondiale fabriquant des trains d'atterrissage. En 2013, trois nouvelles société spécialisées dans l'aéronautique ont décidées de venir s'implanter. Une d'entre-elles, fabricant Européen de fuselage d'aéronef, aura son usine d'assemblage à proximité des pistes.

La construction de l'aéroport de Mirabel commença en 1970 sous le gouvernement Trudeau. Montréal rayonnait en tant que première métropole canadienne, hôte de la fameuse expo 67 et des jeux olympiques encore à venir de 76. L'aéroport de Dorval ne semblait plus pouvoir suffire aux besoins aériens de la cité. C'est dans cet esprit que le gouvernement fédéral se lança dans un projet ambitieux; doter Montréal d'un second aéroport parmi les plus grands et modernes du monde. Montréal allait devenir la plaque tournante de l'aviation en Amérique du Nord.
Pour ce faire, le 27 mars 1969, près de 100 000 acres de terre furent expropriés, obligeant des milliers de résidents et fermiers de la rive nord à abandonner leur patrimoine dans des conditions pour le moins révoltantes.
L'aéroport de Mirabel ne sera jamais achevé au delà de la phase 1 de construction et tombera rapidement en déclin, jusqu'à sa fermeture pour ainsi dire totale en 2004. L'aéroport qui devait être un symbole de la fierté canadienne, fut un cuisant échec.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau fait sans aucun doute partie des grands hommes politiques de l'histoire canadienne. Ses interventions en politique internationale, l'enchâssement d'une charte de droits dans la constitution canadienne, le bilinguisme fédéral ne sont que quelques exemples de ses accomplissements politiques qui nous influencent encore aujourd'hui.
Par contre, pour un pourcentage appréciable de la population du Québec, on se rappelle des années Trudeau par la loi des mesures de guerre ou encore le rapatriement unilatéral de la constitution canadienne. L'aéroport construit sous son règne est cité comme l'exemple même du mégaprojet raté, une partie du Québec considère Trudeau comme le despote ayant violé ses droits démocratiques lors de la crise d'octobre 70, les gens des alentours de Mirabel ont vu leur communauté déchirée au nom du développement canadien et pourtant, l'aéroport de Dorval hérite maintenant du nom de Trudeau. Une histoire d'hier faisant le portrait du Québec aujourd'hui.
Une réflexion sur les relations Ottawa-Québec, un film d'enquête percutant de vérité racontant l'odyssée des expropriés de Mirabel et mettant en garde contre la dérape technocratique des gouvernements. Outre les expropriés on y retrouve également l'ancien Premier-Ministre Bernard Landry, l'auteur Robin Philpot, l'avocat Guy Bertrand ainsi que l'avant-dernière apparition filmique de Pierre Falardeau.

The infrastructure to & from Montreal was poorly planned.
They should have kept this international and Dorval domestic. Also, this airport could have brought in more overseas traffic and all the burden wouldn't be on Pearson Airport in Toronto. The two airport system could have worked real well, but they let this airport go to waste. How sad and disappointing!
It was separatism that killed Mirabel , PM.Trudeau had thought that Montreal would have grown into a HUGE City, but instead, Party Quebecois sold that dream to Toronto. This is why the airport failed and highway 13 was never finished !!!
It is now official, the Mirabel airport terminal will be demolished. what about the future of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport in Dorval? The Dorval airport is too small and too much traffic to try to get to that airport. With increasing population and air travel demand I think that it's a big mistake to not consider reopening the Mirabel airport one day. Billions of dollars of wasted money and for what? to demolish the airport terminal? very very sad.
From what I understand, Mirabel's biggest failure was its lack of direct connections to Montreal and the fact that they split the flights between Trudeau and Mirabel, with Mirabel handling only international and Trudeau handling only domestic. This created a huge amount of logistical issues for passengers that needed to transfer from a domestic flight to an international one, and airlines had to provision a second aircraft if they wanted to do a multi leg international trip (example: Calgary-Montreal-Canary Islands). Mirabel might have been more successful if these issues were rectified early on (Through the upgrading of road connections to the airport and the complete closure of Trudeau)

Montréal–Mirabel International Airport
Montréal–Mirabel International Airport (IATA: YMX, ICAO: CYMX), originally called Montréal International Airport and widely known as Mirabel, is a cargo airport located in Mirabel, Quebec, Canada, 21 nautical miles (39 km; 24 mi) northwest of Montreal and opened October 4, 1975. By surface area it was the largest airport in the world ever envisioned, with a planned area of 39,660 hectares (396.6 km2; 98,000 acres); King Fahd International Airport in Saudi Arabia, completed in 1999, eventually surpassed its surface area. In 1989, 32,780 hectares (81,000 acres) of the 39,660 hectares (98,000 acres) were deeded back to their owners.
The predominant role of the airport is cargo flights but it is also home to MEDEVAC and general aviation flights as well as being a manufacturing base for Bombardier Aerospace, where final assembly of regional jet (CRJ700, CRJ900 and CRJ1000) aircraft and the Bombardier CSeries is conducted. The former passenger terminal apron is now a racing course.

This is a little video of the now unfortunatly abandonned Montreal-Mirabel Intl airport with pictures of before and after 2004. Included are also shots of inside the terminal and surroundings from february 18th 2009. The infrastructure to & from Montreal was poorly planned. They should have kept this international and Dorval domestic. Also, this airport could have brought in more overseas traffic and all the burden wouldn't be on Pearson Airport in Toronto. The two airport system could have worked real well, but they let this airport go to waste. How sad and disappointing! It was separatism that killed Mirabel , PM.Trudeau had thought that Montreal would have grown into a HUGE City, but instead, Party Quebecois sold that dream to Toronto. En 2013, trois nouvelles société spécialisées dans l'aéronautique ont décidées de venir s'implanter. La construction de l'aéroport de Mirabel commença en 1970 sous le gouvernement Trudeau. Montréal rayonnait en tant que première métropole canadienne, hôte de la fameuse expo 67 et des jeux olympiques encore à venir de 76. L'aéroport de Dorval ne semblait plus pouvoir suffire aux besoins aériens de la cité. C'est dans cet esprit que le gouvernement fédéral se lança dans un projet ambitieux; doter Montréal d'un second aéroport parmi les plus grands et modernes du monde. Montréal allait devenir la plaque tournante de l'aviation en Amérique du Nord.
Pour ce faire, le 27 mars 1969, près de 100 000 acres de terre furent expropriés, obligeant des milliers de résidents et fermiers de la rive nord à abandonner leur patrimoine dans des conditions pour le moins révoltantes.
L'aéroport de Mirabel ne sera jamais achevé au delà de la phase 1 de construction et tombera rapidement en déclin, jusqu'à sa fermeture pour ainsi dire totale en 2004. L'aéroport qui devait être un symbole de la fierté canadienne, fut un cuisant échec.
Pierre Elliott Trudeau fait sans aucun doute partie des grands hommes politiques de l'histoire canadienne. Ses interventions en politique internationale, l'enchâssement d'une charte de droits dans la constitution canadienne, le bilinguisme fédéral ne sont que quelques exemples de ses accomplissements politiques qui nous influencent encore aujourd'hui.
Par contre, pour un pourcentage appréciable de la population du Québec, on se rappelle des années Trudeau par la loi des mesures de guerre ou encore le rapatriement unilatéral de la constitution canadienne. L'aéroport construit sous son règne est cité comme l'exemple même du mégaprojet raté, une partie du Québec considère Trudeau comme le despote ayant violé ses droits démocratiques lors de la crise d'octobre 70, les gens des alentours de Mirabel ont vu leur communauté déchirée au nom du développement canadien et pourtant, l'aéroport de Dorval hérite maintenant du nom de Trudeau. Une histoire d'hier faisant le portrait du Québec aujourd'hui.
Une réflexion sur les relations Ottawa-Québec, un film d'enquête percutant de vérité racontant l'odyssée des expropriés de Mirabel et mettant en garde contre la dérape technocratique des gouvernements. It is now official, the Mirabel airport terminal will be demolished. what about the future of the Pierre Elliott Trudeau airport in Dorval? The Dorval airport is too small and too much traffic to try to get to that airport. With increasing population and air travel demand I think that it's a big mistake to not consider reopening the Mirabel airport one day. Billions of dollars of wasted money and for what? to demolish the airport terminal? very very sad.
From what I understand, Mirabel's biggest failure was its lack of direct connections to Montreal and the fact that they split the flights between Trudeau and Mirabel, with Mirabel handling only international and Trudeau handling only domestic. This created a huge amount of logistical issues for passengers that needed to transfer from a domestic flight to an international one, and airlines had to provision a second aircraft if they wanted to do a multi leg international trip (example: Calgary-Montreal-Canary Islands). Mirabel might have been more successful if these issues were rectified early on (Through the upgrading of road connections to the airport and the complete closure of Trudeau)

The mobile lounge or Passenger Transfer Vehicle (PTV) is a system for boarding and disembarkation from aircraft that used to be very prominent at Washington Dulles International Airport, Montreal Mirabel International Airport, and Paris, Roissy Airport before the 1990s. It is still in use in Montreal Dorval Airport and some inter-terminal transit at Washington Dulles. The system was part of the Washington Dulles terminal design by Eero Saarinen.[1]
The lounge is a 54-by-16-foot carriage mounted on a scissor truck, capable of carrying 102 passengers. These vehicles were designed by the Chrysler Corporation in association with the Budd Company, and are sometimes nicknamed "moon buggies" due to their otherworldly appearance. When mobile lounges were first introduced, they had ramps at one end that could be raised or lowered to the floor height of an aircraft. However, when they were retrofitted to be used only for inter-terminal passenger transport, the ramps were removed and doors that could interlock with a terminal building were fitted to either end. Mobile lounges have a driver's cab at each end. The wheels at either end of the lounge can be steered, but the wheels at the end opposite the driver lock into a straight-ahead configuration so that the lounge is steered only by the wheels at the leading end of the lounge.
Eero Saarinen promoted the mobile lounge concept with a short animated film by Charles and Ray Eames.[2] Dulles Airport was the realization of the concepts expressed in the film.
The plane mate is an evolutionary variation on the concept. They are similar in appearance to mobile lounges, but can raise themselves on screws (parts of which are contained in a pair of fin-like towers above the vehicles) to "mate" directly with an aircraft. This allows passengers to deplane directly aboard and be carried to the main terminal. They are easily identified by the different window configuration and two short columns on the roof with red beacons mounted on the top. Plane mates have an accordion-like canopy at one end (similar to the canopy seen at the end of a jet bridge) and have only one driver's cab and one set of steering wheels at the canopy end.
When built, Dulles's designers thought that by shuttling from the main terminal directly to a midfield jet ramp, they could save passengers from long walking distances amidst weather, noise, and fumes on the ramp. The advent of the jet bridge and construction of the midfield concourses diluted the system's advantages.
Dulles is one of the few remaining airports to use the mobile lounge/plane mate system. On January 26, 2010, the MWAA replaced the mobile lounge system for passenger movements between the Main Terminal and the A, B, and C-Gates with the AeroTrain. However, some mobile lounges/plane mates remain in use for passenger movements to and from Concourse D, to disembark international passengers from all arriving international aircraft (minus United flights landing at Concourse C and flights from countries with border preclearance) and carry them to the International Arrivals Building, and to convey passengers to and from aircraft on hard standing (i.e., those parked remotely on the tarmac without access to jet bridges).[3]

Early in the space shuttle program, NASA used a plane mate system to move astronauts directly from the orbiter to crew facilities. A modified vehicle obtained from the Baltimore airport was used for shuttle landings at Edwards Air Force Base. A similar vehicle was used at the Kennedy Space Center to take astronauts directly from the orbiter to the Operations and Checkout building where the vehicle was again lifted up for the astronauts to exit directly onto the 2nd floor of the facility.[4][5]

Hi. I'm Adam. Welcome back to www.engvid.com. Today's lesson is a little bit specialized. We're going to talk about going through customs at a U.S. airport, more specifically, at an airport.
Now, before I begin, why am I doing this lesson? Not too long ago, I flew... I had to go out of town and I had to fly through the States. I flew through Detroit, it's a big hub. In case you're ever flying through a hub, a hub is a central area where many flights come and connect to other flights. And I was in line at the customs, and ahead of me was a couple, they were tourists, I think. And I could see the panic on their faces when the custom guy... Customs guy started speaking to them and asking them questions, and they were so nervous, and they could barely speak. And the more nervous they became, the more questions they got from the customs guy. So, I want to make going through customs as easy as possible for you by giving you a few tips.
First thing you have to remember when you come to the customs guys: have all your forms completed properly. So, if you're coming into a States, you're going to be given a form, I think it's an I-94 form with all kinds of questions. Fill out everything correctly, properly. If you're not sure what something means, ask a flight attendant to help you, they will. Fill everything before you get to customs. Have all your documents; your passport, your return flight ticket. If you're going as a student, have your Visa. If you're going there to work, have your Visa, your work permit, whatever you need. All documents ready, all forms complete, ready to go.
Then the most important thing that you can do when going through customs at an U.S. airport is relax. Okay? Very important to relax. Now, one thing you will notice about American customs officers, they never ever smile. They will never smile. They are always going to look mean, and tough, and questions, questions, questions. That's their job. They're nice people. Don't think anything badly of them. They're doing their job, they want to scare you so that you give them the information that they need.
So, relax. Answer all their questions quickly and as short as possible. If they ask you a yes/no question, answer yes or no. Almost... In most cases, in 99% of the questions, don't say: "I don't know." You do know. You know everything that they're going to ask you. Yes, no, there, there, this long, that person, done. Okay.
So, they can ask you any number of questions, but here are a few of the more common questions that they might ask you. Okay? So, be prepared, answer them quickly, go on your way, enjoy your vacation in the U.S.
What is your final destination? It means: where are you going? Where is your last stop? So, if you're flying in to New York and then you're catching another flight to Kentucky, your final destination is Kentucky, not New York. So, you're going to Kentucky. If you're going to another country, so for example I was coming back to Canada. What is your final destination? Toronto. I was just flying through the U.S.
How long will you be staying in the U.S.? Again, never say: "I don't know." You do know. You have a return ticket out. If you have an open ticket, say you have... "I have a one-year open ticket. I'm not sure when I'm going to go back, but within one year." Have that ticket ready to show him or her. Okay?
How long will you be staying? Two days, a week, two weeks, whatever.
What is the purpose of your visit? Why are you here? To visit family, work or business, tourism, vacation, or transit. Okay? I was there, just transit. Transiting. I was just catching a flight to my next place, which is Canada. I was just here to transit. No problem.
Where will you be staying? Now, this is a very important question. If you are staying in the U.S., make sure you have your hotel address ready to tell the customs officer. If you're staying with a friend, have your friend's address ready to tell the customs officer.
