"Pilot" Director: Philip Rapp, Writers: Arthur Stander, Phil Sharp. This is the very first episode. Those of you familiar with the normal set will see a difference in the decoration of their house. Jim Backus seems to be having the time of his life in this one. It opens with Judge Stevens giving counsel in chambers to a couple (Shirley Mitchell and Hal March) who are about to get a divorce. He regales them with the story of how he met Joan, then a fledgling airline "hostess." Joan comes up with some very funny physical shtick on the rocking plane. The second half finds Joan attempting to conceal the purchase of a Persian lamb coat from Brad. Hope Emerson plays her neighbor, Minerva. In a frantic move, Joan hides the coat by putting it in the top-loading deep freeze. This episode is actually funnier than even we remember it, with lots of clever business and an almost improvised easy-breezy feel between Joan and Jim. Joan sings "Way Down Upon the Swanee River" accompanied by Jim on air banjo. Sweet.

For her current half hour on CBS (Monday, 8:30-9 p.m. EWT) Swan Soap pays Miss Davis $1,000,000 a year. Her rise to these remarkable financial heights started four years ago when she got a job as a comic with Rudy Vallee and John Barrymore on the Sealtest hour. When Barrymore died and Vallee enlisted in the Coast Guard, skeptics thought the Sealtest program was finished. "Way Up Thar" 1/2. Part 1 opens with Jim and Jenny in love at the family still (think The Beverly Hillbillies without the oil), the conflict is that Jim's dad wants him to marry the daughter (Sophie) of a man to whom he owes money. In this part John W. Jackson (Jim) sings I Live in the House with Her to the accompaniment of the Sons of the Pioneers. Joan sings She'll Be Comin' 'Round the Mountain, does her famous slip-slide routine while holding a pile of dinner plates, and sings a little ditty about why animals make the sounds they do. Part 1 ends with brawl centering around who will or will not marry whom.
This 1934 short subject was Mack Sennett's final directorial effort for Educational Pictures, and comedienne Joan Davis' film debut. It features Buster Keaton's Mother and Sister, Myra and Louise, respectively. A very young Roy Rogers (billed as Leonard Slye) is featured as a member of the Sons of the Pioneers, and sings a few songs during the course of the movie. Freeze-frames were utilitized as an alternative to video static. Enough of the film remains to warrant a viewing.

Joan Davis
Joan Davis (June 29, 1907 – May 22, 1961) was an American comedic actress whose career spanned vaudeville, film, radio and television. Remembered best for the 1950s television comedy I Married Joan, Davis had a successful earlier career as a B-movie actress and a leading star of 1940s radio comedy.
Born Madonna Josephine Davis in Saint Paul, Minnesota, Davis had been a performer since childhood. She appeared with her husband Si Wills in vaudeville.
Career
Films
Davis' first film was a short subject for Educational Pictures called Way Up Thar (1935), featuring a then-unknown Roy Rogers. Educational's distribution company, Twentieth Century-Fox, signed Davis for feature films. Tall and lanky, with a comically flat speaking voice, she became known as one of the few female physical clowns of her time. Perhaps best known for her co-starring turn with Bud Abbott and Lou Costello in Hold That Ghost (1941), she had a reputation for flawless physical comedy. Her pantomime sequence in Beautiful But Broke (1944) was a slapstick construction-site episode. Not to forget TAILSPIN (1939) as a supporting actor, for the women's Bendix Air Race circuit.

Plot: In 1993, Solvay, NY Deputies responding to a missing persons report, found the body of missing James Connelly (18) and the body of Joe Gainard (60's). All evidence pointed to Joe as the killer of James, but before he could leave the scene, Joe died of natural causes. Almost as soon as the bodies were discovered, people began disappearing for no reason other than they were at the railroad tracks, between Railroad Markers 313-330. Ten years later, Michele Connelly, James's older sister and New York Journal Reporter returns from New York City to investigate what actually happened to her brother and the more than thirty people who have disappeared since. From the beginning, her questions and attempts to find the truth are road blocked by local Sheriff Pete Scoggins. His impression upon Michele is that what happened is in the past and it is time to move on. Michele instinctively knows he is hiding something, but what? Michele talks to local farmers to find out more. They inform her that after Joe's death, the Sheriff banned anyone from going out to the Railroad Tracks where the crime happened. They also tell her that over twenty bodies were discovered in Joe's old cornfield after it was sold to a new owner. The bodies that were found date back as far as fifty years since they were last seen alive. Soon, Michele finds herself feeling as if she is part of the story she is investigating.

Jim Backus seems to be having the time of his life in this one. It opens with Judge Stevens giving counsel in chambers to a couple (Shirley Mitchell and Hal March) who are about to get a divorce. "The Maid" Director: Ezra Stone. Writers: Hugh Wedlock, Howard Snyder, Jesse Goldstein, Phil Sharp. The episode opens with Joan and two friends, played by Sondra Gould (Gladys Kravitz #2 on "Bewitched") and Sheila Bromley having lunch at a Chasen's-like restaurant named Phebe Warren's (anyone care to shed some light on the name?). The friends are bragging about how they couldn't live without their respective maid/cook. Joan finds Tillie (Virginia Rose), a star-struck girl who fills the bill very well.
