Lebanon (
i/ˈlɛbənɒn/ or /ˈlɛbənən/; Arabic: لبنان Libnān or Lubnān, Lebanese Arabic: [lɪbˈneːn]), officially the Lebanese Republic (Arabic: الجمهورية اللبنانية al-Jumhūrīyah al-Libnānīyah, Lebanese Arabic: [elˈʒʊmhuːɾɪjje l.ˈlɪbneːnɪjje]), is a country in the East Mediterranean. It is bordered by Syria to the north and east, and Israel to the south. Lebanon's location at the crossroads of the Mediterranean Basin and the Arabian hinterland has dictated its rich history, and shaped a cultural identity of religious and ethnic diversity.
The earliest evidence of civilization in Lebanon dates back more than 7,000 years—predating recorded history. Lebanon was the home of the Phoenicians, a maritime culture that flourished for nearly 2,500 years (3000–539 BC). Following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire after World War I, the five provinces that comprise modern Lebanon were mandated to France. The French expanded the borders of Mount Lebanon, which was mostly populated by Maronite Catholics and Druze, to include more Muslims. Lebanon gained independence in 1943, and established a unique political system, known as confessionalism, a power-sharing mechanism based on religious communities – Bechara El Khoury who became independent Lebanon's first President and Riad El-Solh, who became Lebanon's first prime minister, are considered the founders of the modern Republic of Lebanon and are national heroes for having led the country's independence. French troops withdrew from Lebanon in 1946.

Julian Paul Assange (
/əˈsɒnʒ/ ə-SONZH; born 3 July 1971) is an Australian computer programmer, political/internet activist, publisher, and journalist. He is best known as the editor in chief and founder of WikiLeaks, a media website which publishes information from whistleblowers. The site acts as a conduit for worldwide news leaks, with a stated purpose of creating open governance.
WikiLeaks has published material about extrajudicial killings in Kenya, toxic waste dumping in Côte d'Ivoire, Church of Scientology manuals, Guantanamo Bay procedures, and banks such as Kaupthing and Julius Baer. In 2010, WikiLeaks published Iraq War documents and Afghan War documents about American involvement in the wars, some of which was classified material. On 28 November 2010, WikiLeaks and its five international print media partners (Der Spiegel, The New York Times, Le Monde, The Guardian and El País) began publishing U.S. diplomatic cables.
Assange was a hacker-activist in his youth, before becoming a computer programmer and then becoming internationally renowned for his work with WikiLeaks. He has lived in several countries and has made public appearances in many parts of the world to speak about freedom of the press, censorship, and investigative journalism. He has received numerous awards and nominations, including the 2009 Amnesty International Media Award, Readers' Choice for TIME magazine's 2010 Person of the Year, the 2011 Sydney Peace Foundation gold medal and the 2011 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism.Snorre Valen, a Norwegian parliamentarian, nominated him for the 2011 Nobel Peace Prize.

A Lebanese journalist and her television station go on trial Thursday in The Hague for allegedly interfering with the work of the UN Special Tribunal for Lebanon investigating the assassination of a former Lebanese prime minister by publishing the names of witnesses. The court says it must protect its ability to work, but the accused and their supporters say the case is an unacceptable attack on freedom of the press. VOA’s Al Pessin reports from London.

STORYLINE:
The registrar of a tribunal that will prosecute suspected assassins of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik Hariri said on Tuesday the court's prosecutor will likely request the transfer of suspects from Beirut in coming weeks.
Robin Vincent said the prosecutor has 60 days from the date the court formally opens on Sunday to request suspects be turned over for trial.
The court's Canadian prosecutor Daniel Bellemare has recently indicated he plans to request the transfer of suspects, Vincent said. He gave no further details of suspects that could be sent to the Netherlands.
Nobody has been charged in the suicide bombing that killed Hariri and 22 others, although four pro-Syria Lebanese generals have been under arrest for more than three years for alleged involvement.
Hariri, a billionaire businessman, had close ties with Western leaders and was credited with helping rebuild Lebanon's capital after the 1975-1990 civil war and trying to limit neighbouring Syria's influence over Lebanon.
The tribunal, based in a former Dutch intelligence agency in a village just outside The Hague, formally opens for business on Sunday even though no judges have yet been named and it still has no rule book for prosecutors and judges.
The U.N. Security Council unilaterally set up the tribunal in 2007 after the speaker of the Lebanese parliament refused to call a session to ratify the statutes to create it.
It is housed in the Netherlands, which already is home to the Yugoslav war crimes tribunal and International Criminal Court, primarily for security reasons.
Bellemare is expected to make a statement on the progress of his investigation at Sunday's opening ceremony.
Vincent, who is the tribunal's administrative chief, said he is ready to detain suspects in a Dutch jail that already holds Bosnian Serb leader Radovan Karadzic and former Liberian President Charles Taylor among other international war crimes suspects.
"A distinct wing of cells has been acquired by us, is operational and is ready in terms of receiving anyone we get," Vincent told reporters who gathered in a gymnasium that will be transformed into the tribunal's courtroom by year's end.

Hezbollah, a Shiite group, is backed by Shiite Iran.

But rather than fulfilling its mandate after squandering some $500 million tax dollars, the UN court is seeking to put journalist Karma Khayat (shown) in prison for seven years — not for killing the late Lebanese leader, but for her groundbreaking reporting on the case that exposed the court’s stunning incompetence. The Hague-based UN outfit is also demanding that Khayat’s media outlet, Beirut-based TV news station Al-Jadeed, hand over up to $7 million in “fines.”
In closing statements on June 19 and in an interview with The New American later in the day, Khayat lambasted the UN court and what she said was its outrageous assault on fundamental human rights. “This is a case against freedom of speech and the free press,” she told The New American from Holland after the last day of the trial. “It’s definitely illegitimate to prosecute journalists. The tribunal’s role was to find those who assassinated our prime minister. It should not be used against journalists. We have enough dictators in the Arab region, and we certainly don’t need this.” A “verdict” on the case is expected in the coming months, she said.

The killing of Rafik al-Hariri threw Lebanon into a new phase of political turmoil, and plunged the country into its worst political crisis since the end of the 1975-1990 civil war.
Special tribunal
Five followers of Hezbollah - Salim Jamil Ayyash, Mustafa Amine Badreddine, Hussein Hassan Oneissi, Assad Hassan Sabra and Hassan Habibi Merhi - have been indicted over the killing of Hariri in the special tribunal for Lebanon.
They remain at large and are being tried in absentia.
A memorial monument on the site of Hariri's assassination was set up, and a statue of him was built nearby with a sign reading the names of all those killed in February 2005 blast in Beirut's waterfront near Saint-Georges hotel.
The Lebanon tribunal, which was set up in 2009 at the urging of Western governments, initially enjoyed the support of the then Lebanese government, but Lebanese attitudes towards its investigation have since become more lukewarm.
Some citizens still hope the tribunal will bring justice and put Lebanon back on track in its political and security situation, while others are less optimistic.
Hariri's assassination was followed by a series of attacks which killed anti-Syrian politicians, officials and journalists.

As President of the International Center for Transitional Justice (ICTJ) and with previous experience as deputy chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY), Tolbert's fight for human rights is now on a global scale as he promotes international support for international institutions of justice.
David Tolbert was appointed president of ICTJ in March of 2010. Previously he served as registrar (assistant secretary-general) of the Special Tribunal for Lebanon and prior to that was assistant secretary-general and special expert to the United Nations secretary-general on United Nations Assistance to the Khmer Rouge Trials. From 2004 to 2008 Mr. Tolbert served as deputy chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). In addition Mr. Tolbert taught international law and human rights at the post-graduate level in the United Kingdom and practiced law for many years in the United States.

The European part of the Netherlands borders the North Sea to the north and west, Belgium to the south, and Germany to the east, and shares maritime borders with Belgium, Germany and the United Kingdom. It is a parliamentary democracy organised as a unitary state. The country capital is Amsterdam and the seat of government is The Hague. The Netherlands in its entirety is often referred to as "Holland", although North and South Holland are actually only two of its provinces.

Then it states every practical issue in their daily life: social, political, economic, ecological and humanitarian. When reaching to solutions, those who were supposed to be a solution turn out to be the real problem: The judicial system, Media and civil society. The only solutions left are education and elections. In the end they all dream of the Lebanon they would like to have and turn with a direct message to the young generation and hand them the responsibility of change.
