Here are 10 things Australians do better than Americans.
Australia and the US have a lot in common. The two countries share a language, a regional fondness for surfing, and even have the same mother country.
There are some things, though, that Australians just do better.
Number 10. Live longer. Aussies outlive Americans by nearly 41 months. They also have fewer deaths that result from serious health problems like heart disease and cancer.
Number 9. Whiskey. Hobart’s Sullivan’s Cove French Oak Cask single malt, a spirit distilled in Tasmania, was not long ago named the finest of its kind on the planet at the World Whiskies Awards. Other contenders included entrants from the US, Japan, and Scotland.
Number 8. Gender equality. In 2012 Australia was given the top spot on a list that ranked countries according to how well they supported the professional advancement of women. Factors included access to education, childcare, equal pay, and policies that deter discrimination.
Number 7. Ocean pools. Hanging out at the beach can be great, but the water itself could harbor any number of dangerous species. Australians have solved the problem by putting saltwater pools in several locales where the sand meets the sea.
Number 6. Controlling the cost of college. An American education costs, on average, nearly 14 thousand dollars a year. Attending an institution of higher learning in Australia has a median annual price tag of about 75 hundred dollars.
Number 5. The ‘gap year’. In Australia, it’s perfectly normal for recent high school graduates to wait a year before attending college. Those who do are encouraged to spend the time traveling, working, or both.
Number 4. Pizza. It may come as a complete shock, but an Australian chef was named as having the best pizza at the 2014 World Pizza Championship. The competition is held every year in Parma, Italy and draws competitors from around the globe.
Number 3. Median wealth. According to a Credit Suisse report, adult Australians have a median wealth of over 190 thousand dollars, while in the US it is closer to 40 thousand. These figures include retirement savings and home values.
Number 2. Building livable cities. The Economic Intelligence Unit’s annual Livability survey not only found Melbourne Australia to be the best place to live, 4 other Australian metropolises landed in the top 10. No American cities made the cut.
Number 1. Happiness. Australians have actually been deemed the happiest people in the world three years in a row now - among industrialized nations, anyway. The US did pretty well, too, coming in at 6th.

A little over a hundred years ago, Australians were asking the same questions. In the 1890s we werent yet a nation, just half a dozen of Her Majestys colonies, the vast proportion of the population being Anglo-Celts.

As Australians this year celebrated the centenary of Federation many sought answers to the great questions of national identity: who are we, and what has made us who we are?
A little over a hundred years ago, Australians were asking the same questions. In the 1890s we werent yet a nation, just half a dozen of Her Majestys colonies, the vast proportion of the population being Anglo-Celts.
But talk of federation was widespread, and many sought the symbolic acts that could define the birth of Australia. Except for armed resistance from Aboriginal groups to White settlement, Australia was created peacefully. There was no cataclysmic rebellion or civil war to mark our birth. Many saw this lack of military history as a significant hole in our national psyche. What we needed, they believed; was a war.
That opportunity came in 1899 when British forces took on the Boers of South Africa in a struggle for control of the Republics of Transvaal and Orange Free State. In response to a request from the Mother Country for help, the Australian colonies quickly mobilised their militia forces and shipped them to Cape Town.
Then, on the first day of January in the year 1900, 27 year old Trooper Victor Jones was fatally shot in the chest during a skirmish with the Boers on a remote South African farm called Sunnyside. The young Queenslander, who had previously failed enlistment because of bad teeth, became the first of Australias 102,000 war dead.
Episode 1 of Australians at War, Were on a long trek now, chronicles our involvement in the Anglo-Boer War. The conflict took thirty-one months to resolve, far longer than anyone expected. During that time the Australian colonies federated and our first national military force was formed The Australian Commonwealth Horse, and for the first time the upturned slouch hat and the rising sun hat badge became part of our military uniform.
But the war became unpopular back in Australia. The hit-and-run guerilla tactics of the Boers, and the creation of concentration camps by the British to contain Boer women and children made it hard to find defining moments of national pride. Nonetheless, the Australians by and large performed well and exhibited admirable qualities of courage and resilience. Their actions at the siege of Elands River, for instance, foreshadowed the later exploits of the Anzacs at Gallipoli. We were awarded six Victoria crosses during the Boer conflict and at the same time, managed to create a myth from the murderer Breaker Morant.
Every one of the 20,000 Australians who enlisted for South Africa is now dead. But many were diligent diarists and letter writers. In Australians at War, actors dramatise these writings and provide a compelling personal insight into the conflict. A chance discovery in the archive vaults turned up a priceless series of interviews filmed in 1973 with six veterans of the war. Their experiences of the war, recalled 71 years after its end, provide an appropriate transition of memory into history.
The Boer War remains a little known part of our national history, yet its enlistment and casualty figures are as high as the later, and much more publicised, Vietnam War. Most significantly it established the Australian fighting man as equal to any in the world and ensured that we would be enthusiastically welcomed into the next great world conflict, a conflict that would provide the defining military moment that many Australians hoped for.

“This festival matters. There is nothing comparable in Australia”
– Hon. Tony Burke, MP
Australia Council for the Arts recently reported that:
• 92% of Australians agree that Indigenous arts are an important part of Australia’s culture
• 64% of Australians have a strong or growing interest in Indigenous arts
• 24% of Australians attended Indigenous arts in the previous year
(Source Australia Council for the Arts, 2015)
Boomerang offers the solution to this discrepancy between people interested in engaging, and not knowing how to access Aboriginal culture.
Bluesfest, as Boomerang’s only non-government partner, invites you to join them as leaders in positive change in our local, state, and national cultural landscape.
We invite you to lead the change we want and need to see in our national narrative.
“The Boomerang precinct at Bluesfest is all about cherishing culture and ending the disparity between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australia. This Intergenerational exchange will allow our loyal audiences a unique hands-on engagement and experience while allowing the Boomerang Festival to build audiences and find support as a future stand-alone festival”
- Peter Noble, Festival Director, Bluesfest
Without adequate funding, Boomerang must raise funds to grow into the stand alone festival, and a major contributor to the North NSW cultural landscape, tourism and economy, as well as a landmark event for Australia.
NSW has the largest population of Aboriginal Australians than any other state in the country, and less fiscal support than other regions in the country. Ownership & pro-activeness with art & culture is key to empowerment and inclusion in our diverse society.
On Friday 4th December 2015, Boomerang Festival is launching a Crowd Funding Campaign, where for 90 days, we will be raising money to contribute to the quality programming of the 2016 precinct, and investing the festival’s growth for future years.
Crowd funding packages range from $100 to $7,000, all offering wonderful cultural gifts and experiences, thanks to the generous support of organisations including:
- Bluesfest
- Harvest Café
- Arakwal Aborignal Corporation
- The Farm
- The Three Blue Ducks
- Clayton Donavon & The Jaaning Tree
- Australian Good Food Guide
- The Music
- Virgin Australia
- The Byron @ Byron Resort & Spa

Revellers at an Australian dance music festival were filmed charging into a powerful dust whirlwind on Saturday.
The whirlwind, which Australians refer to as a "willy willy", made a surprise appearance at the Earthcore festival in Pyalong, north of Melbourne.
Olivier Bonenfant, who shot the footage, told the BBC that partygoers immediately started running towards the column of dust and debris.
He uploaded the footage to YouTube, dubbing the incident a "doofnado".
"Doof" is an Australian term for a dance party held in the bush.
"It looked pretty fun … if I wasn't filming I would have run into the Doofnado too," the 32-year-old Canadian said.

Van of Australian surfers who mysteriously disappeared in Mexico has been discovered - as police reveal a 'tragic event' has occurred
The families of two missing Australians in Mexico have been informed that the van they were travelling in has been located and a ‘tragic event has occurred.’
Dean Lucas and Adam Coleman, keen surfers from Golden Bay, an outer southern suburb of Perth, had ‘solid plans and reservations’ to be in Guadalajara, Mexico by Saturday 21 but failed to arrive.
The pair was classed as missing after going on a surfing trip in Mexico, while driving a blue and white Chevrolet, last Friday.
Fearing the safety for the pair, the families are still awaiting confirmation.
The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has since released a statement on the missing Australians confirming their van has been located in Mexico.
‘Dean and Adam were traveling in a van, departing from Topolobampa on Friday 20 November to Guadalajara but did not arrive on their scheduled date.
‘The families and partners are aware the van in which they were traveling has been located by Mexican authorities and that a tragic event has occurred.
‘The families hold deep fears for the safety of their sons but stress that they are still waiting for details to be confirmed,’ read the statement.
Family members of Dean and Adam are travelling to Mexico in the coming days will be coordinating with Australian and Mexican authorities in a bid to find more information.
Mr Lucas' girlfriend Josie Cox has taken to social media appealing for any information that may help find them and has since flown to Mexico to meet up with Mr Coleman's girlfriend Andrea Gomez to assist with the search.
The local media publications have also translated Ms Cox's plea for help in to Spanish in a bid to help try and find the pair.
'The last confirmed siting [sic] was disembarking the ferry from Cabo to Topolobampa on Friday 20th November at 10pm. They were supposed to drive to Guadalajara after this, and never arrived,' Ms Cox wrote on Facebook.
Mr Lucas has also booked flights to the UK from Los Angeles within three days but there is now doubt whether he will be catching the flight.
'They are very keen and confident surfers from Australia and may have gone in search of waves in remote villages close by. We suspect they free camped somewhere on route from Topolobampo to Guadalajara overnight.,
'Their family and I are devastated and would kindly urge that you share this as far as you can and on any relevant social media sites or pages to help us find our boys.'
Another friend of the pair also posted images of the men on social media while also suggesting their phones were stolen.
'They have been driving through Mexico in this van and it's been reported that Adam's phone is now being used by someone else.
'He is usually in regular contact with his mother and girlfriend so this is very out of character for him,' she wrote.
A spokesperson from The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it is 'providing consular assistance to families in Australia who are seeking to establish the welfare of other family members in Mexico.
'Due to privacy reasons we will not be making further comment,' the spokesperson said.

Australian cuisine refers to the cuisine of Australia and its indigenous and colonial societies. Indigenous Australians have occupied the lands of Australia for some 40,000–60,000 years, during which time they developed a unique hunter gatherer diet, known as "bush tucker", drawn from regional Australian flora and fauna—such as the kangaroo. Australia was, from 1788 to 1900, a collection of British colonies in which culinary tastes were strongly influenced by British and Irish traditions - and agricultural products such as beef cattle, sheep and wheat became staples in the Australian diet. Post-war Australia's multicultural immigration program lead to a diversification of the cuisine of Australia, particularly under the influence of Mediterranean and East Asian migrants.
Australian cuisine of the first decade of the 21st century shows the influence of globalisation. Organic and biodynamic foods have become widely available and there has been a revival of interest in bushfoods. British traditions persist to varying degrees in domestic cooking and the takeaway food sector, with roast dinners, the Australian meat pie and fish and chips remaining hugely popular, but there are also new elements featured in these foods. Meat is a core component of the Australian cuisine and diet, and the production of meat has historically been a significant part of Australia's agricultural economy. To barbecue meat is considered traditional in Australia. While fast food chains are abundant, Australia's metropolitan centres possess many famed haute cuisine and nouvelle cuisine establishments offering both local and international food due to strong multiculturalism. Restaurants whose product includes contemporary adaptations, interpretations or fusions of exotic influences are frequently termed "Modern Australian".
Before the arrival of the First Fleet of Europeans at Sydney in 1788, indigenous Australians survived off the often unique native flora and fauna of the Australian bush, for between 40,000 and 60,000 years. Hunting of kangaroo, wallaby and emu was common. Other foods widely consumed included bogong moths, witchetty grubs, lizards and snakes. Bush berries, fruits, and honeys were also used.
Resource availability and dietary make-up varied from region to region—desert dwellers could be constantly on the move to find new foods, while other tribal districts allowed relatively fixed positioning. Fish were caught using technologies such as spears, hooks and traps. Food preparation techniques also varied, however a common cooking technique was for the carcass to be thrown directly on a camp fire to be roasted.
Following the pre-colonial period, European settlers began arriving with the First Fleet of British ships at Sydney harbour in 1788. The diet consisted of "bread, salted meat, and tea, with lashings of rum (from the West Indies, but which was later made from the waste cane of the sugar industry in Queensland)." The British settlers found some familiar game in Australia - such as swan, goose, pigeon and fish - but the new settlers often had difficulty adjusting to the prospect of native fauna as a staple diet. They set about establishing agricultural industries producing more familiar Western style produce.
After initial difficulties, Australian agriculture became a major global producer and supplied an abundance of fresh produce for the local market. Stock grazing (mostly sheep and cattle) are prevalent throughout the continent. Queensland and New South Wales became Australia's main beef cattle producers, while dairy cattle farming is found in the southern states, predominantly in Victoria. Wheat and other grain crops are spread fairly evenly throughout the mainland states. Sugar cane is also a major crop in Queensland and New South Wales. Fruit and vegetables are grown throughout Australia.
Other than the indigenous climate and produce, Australian cuisine has been derived from the tastes of immigrant settlers to Australia and the produce they have introduced to the continent. The British colonial period established a strong base of interest in Anglo-Celtic style recipes and methods. Subsequent waves of multicultural immigration, with a majority drawn from Asia and the Mediterranean region, and the strong, sophisticated food cultures these ethnic communities have brought with them influenced the development of Australian cuisine.
Fresh produce is readily available and thus used extensively, and the trend (urged by long-term government health initiatives) is towards low-salt, low-fat healthy cookery incorporating lean meat and lightly cooked, colourful, steamed or stir-fried vegetables. With most of the Australian population residing in coastal areas, fish and seafood is popular.

Learn more - http://www.battleoflongtan.com Late afternoon August 18, 1966 South Vietnam -- for three and a half hours, in the pouring rain, amid the mud and shattered trees of a rubber plantation called Long Tan, Major Harry Smith and his dispersed company of 108 young and mostly inexperienced Australian and New Zealand soldiers are fighting for their lives, holding off an overwhelming enemy force of 2,500 battle hardened Viet Cong and North Vietnamese soldiers. With their ammunition running out, their casualties mounting and the enemy massing for a final assault each man begins to search for his own answer -- and the strength to triumph over an uncertain future with honor, decency and courage.
The ensuing Battle of Long Tan becomes one of the most savage and decisive engagements in ANZAC history, earning both the United States and South Vietnamese Presidential Unit Citations for gallantry along with many individual awards. But sadly not before 18 Australians and more than 500 enemy are killed. Heroism, tragedy and the sacrifice of battle, Long Tan is a grueling and dramatic exploration of war with all its horror, that will rightly take its place alongside war classics such as Gallipoli, Breaker Morant, Saving Private Ryan, Zulu & Blackhawk Down.
This documentary and our upcoming movie is a tribute to the nobility and uncommon valor of these men -- many of them conscripts - under fire. It honors their loyalty to their country and to each other, and it brings to light the heroism and unimaginable sacrifice of all military men and women both home and abroad.
Long Tan is the true story of ordinary boys who became extraordinary men.

The following description is taken from the AWM catalogue record.
After the third battle of Ypres in September 1917 the Australians were put in to hold the Messines Wytschaete sector and to prepare defences against the expected German spring offensive.
The German offensive was launched opposite Amiens and the Australians were sent to meet it. The heaviest fighting was around Villers Bretonneux which was retaken by the Australians. In May General Monash took command of the Australian Corps from General Birdwood.
On 4th July the Battle of Hamel was fought by Australians and Americans under Australian command. On 8 August the Allied offensive took place with tanks and cavalry used on a large scale. General Monash knighted by King George V at Corps HQ Bertangles.
The capture of Mont St Quentin by the 2nd Division; Peronne captured at the same time. At Chuignes the 3rd Battalion captured their largest trophy ever, a 15 inch naval gun weighing over 500 tons.
Prime Minister Hughes visited the front and met the AIF at Peronne. [Official historian Charles Bean appears very briefly in the background when AIF staff showed newspaper editors prisoners of war captured by Australians].
The AIF broke through the Hindenburg Line after the Americans were checked at Gillemont Farm. On 21 September 1918 the 53rd Battalion held a memorial parade at Quinconce.
Unfortunately, because of the way the films were originally digitised by the AWM, the timecode is burnt in to the footage.

In 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate. New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. This film shows us the bitter struggle of the Australian and American soldiers to take New Guinea in World War 2.
Battle for New Guinea | 1942-1945 | Australian & American Soldiers in Action | WW2 Documentary Film
About the New Guinea campaign:
The New Guinea campaign of the Pacific War lasted from January 1942 until the end of the war in August 1945. In the initial phase in 1942, the Empire of Japan invaded the Australian-administered territories of the New Guinea Mandate (23 January) and Papua (8 March) and overran western New Guinea (beginning 29/30 March), which was a part of the Netherlands East Indies. In the second phase, the Allies cleared the Japanese first from Papua, then the Mandate and finally from the Dutch colony.
New Guinea was strategically important because it was a major landmass to the immediate north of Australia. Its large land area provided locations for large land, air and naval bases.
The campaign between Allied and Japanese forces commenced with the Japanese assault on Rabaul on 23 January 1942. Rabaul became the forward base for the Japanese campaigns in mainland New Guinea, including the pivotal Kokoda Track campaign of July 1942 – January 1943, and the Battle of Buna-Gona. Fighting in some parts of New Guinea continued until the war ended in August 1945.
General Douglas MacArthur as Supreme Commander in the South West Pacific Area, led the Allied forces. The Japanese 8th Area Army, under General Hitoshi Imamura, was responsible for both the New Guinea and Solomon Islands campaigns. The Japanese 18th Army, under Lieutenant General Hatazo Adachi, was responsible for Japanese operations on mainland New Guinea.
Liberating New Guinea:
After bombing the Australian harbour of Darwin in 1942, the Japanese move their headquarters to Buna on the north coast of what is now Papua New Guinea and the headquarters of the Allies is set up in Port Moresby on the other side. These towns are divided by the steep Owen Stanley mountain range. The two towns are connected by the Kokoda track across the mountains. Australian troops successfully defend Port Moresby along this trail, when the Japanese try to invade from the north coast. To get the advantage, the Australian carved out 4000 steps into the mountain side.
The American army lands on New Guinea in January 1943 and starts a major attack. However, it takes up until 1944 before the Americans can advance along the northern coast of New Guinea from Hollandia to Biak and Manokwari and on to the North Moluccas (Morotai) from where they attack the Philippines in October 1944. In order to recapture New Guinea, the Allied Forces need to drive the Japanese off along 2000 km of fortified coast line. During this battle 13000 Japanese soldiers die and on the Australian and American side there are respectively 2100 and 2000 casualties.
